I was nervous to post this video! I was worried people would think I’m hypocritical for criticizing influencer strategies while simultaneously being an influencer who posts beauty content. And I wouldn’t blame someone for feeling that way. Since day 1, I’ve been trying to build a beauty channel that is based in honesty and thoughtfulness, but I also earn income from this channel and I think that’s important to mention. I’m trying to do things “the right way,” but I recognize there are people who don’t believe that’s possible in a capitalist field, and I respect that. I’m curious to hear your thoughts. 🩵

And that is smart, you are making your own informed decision. Kate posted a thumbnail of influencer faces and an inflammatory caption just to get people to click on her video which gives her views and/or subscribers. That is what she’s supposed to do to grow her channel. Everyone has an angle. If it was just information she wanted to give you, she could have achieved the same thing without calling people out, unless she has proof that a person is being deceptive, and probably would not have received as many view’s. Marlena Snell essentially did a similar video without calling out people. Which I get what you’re saying about needing to know the bad guys, but some of those people were not. I encourage you to watch Marlena’s video titled “stop buying makeup you don’t need” posted Sunday. Same message just not derogatory. I still love Kate everyone, and won’t stop watching her because I love her content. I’m simply saying that some of the people she called out have families to feed too and rely of YT as their only means of income. I guess my message is to make your own decisions about content, we are only influenced if we allow ourselves to be. Boy, such a can of worms!

That was the perfect time for the mom to teach her daughter that you don’t need materialistic things to make you feel good or fit in. There’s always going to be something that other kids have that you don’t. Will the mom go out and buy the new “it” thing each time this happens? When you do that you reinforce to your child that yes, you DO, need these things to fit in. When I was growing up I really wanted a denim two piece outfit (super cool in the early 2000s). My mom did not go out and buy the outfit. Instead, she taught me how to create my own unique style instead of trying to fit in and look like everyone else. It was challenging to deal with as an 8th grader but it taught me to be an independent thinker. And now, I have such amazing style compared to my peers. I’m constantly complemented on my fashion and I owe it to my mom. It’s ok to make your kids uncomfortable, as long as their basic needs are being met. And a stanley cup or my denim outfit, are not basic needs. They’re wants.

I've said this elsewhere, but the system is broken. I've seen influencers receive PR and say things like, "I wanted so badly to like this," "I tried so hard to make this work," "I love the team at this brand, so I feel bad saying something negative about this," "While I don't like this product, I like these other products from this brand." There's an obvious influence on a creator's review if they receive a product for free.
@StateofKait
Ай бұрын
Definitely, but there's an extra layer that adds context to this. Yes, influencers don't want to sour their relationships with brands, but it also concerns online judgment. We get hate if we aren't overly nice about a product. You'd be surprised by how many people will absolutely flip out if you don't like a product or brand that they like. At the beginning of my channel, SO many people accused me of being a b*tch because I was completely unfiltered in my thoughts. Now, I have more of a "customer service" mindset and I think that's relevant to the conversation too. All of it is at play.

If they repurchase something over and over again I can feel confident that they really do like it and it isn’t sponsored. Even Lisa Jauregui of BK Beauty didn’t reveal a sponsorship on a video she did about a “top” foundation. I could tell it was sponsored. She mentioned the full product name 4x in the video and would show the bottle multiple times. Never did she mention a sponsorship or put the flag about a paid sponsorship or even say she partnered with the brand at the start of the video. I looked in the description box and you had to HUNT for it. It was buried in between a bunch of other text that indeed the video was sponsored. I think influencers like to test out if they get more views and hits on their links if they don’t reveal it. Lisa also does reveal it in other videos, but that one she absolutely did not. I also believe she filtered out comments with key words like sponsorship. Lisa is a super “trusted” influencer and if she did that who else does? That was some months ago, but probably was not more than a year ago. She knows full well the requirements. I will not follow her anymore.

Bam. It's refreshing to see an influencer who has the guts to say it like it is and say it loud and clear. One of the worst most disingenuous influencers is the woman at 13:10. She shills for her supper, and it pays her very well! Every few days she comes out with new list of 'life-changing' products, each item she promises are personal favorites. It's virtually impossible every single item Whitney claims to be "obsessed with" is truly something she uses even occasionally. There are simply not enough hours in one day, not enough years in one lifetime. It's cruel manipulation and a complete lack of humanity for the people who devotedly follow them. These influencers target young women; it's so wrong as young women are the very group who can least afford mostly useless 'potions and notions.' I'm unsure how some of the more callous influencers sleep at night.

It absolutely grinds my gears when someone is very clearly doing an ad, or was at least gifted products from a brand, but they never verbally state that it's an ad, it's never mentioned in the video, and at the VERY BOTTOM of the description/caption: "brand x kindly provided products/this video was in collaboration with brand x", etc. Like I have zero issue with people doing sponsorships. But I have major issues with not properly disclosing relationship you have with brands. Imo whenever someone isn't upfront, it instantly discredits any recommendations they give. Thank you Kait for always being so straightforward and honest! You're a real breath of fresh air in the mass of brands and influencers doing this whole pay-to-play nonsense.

It’s not hypocritical because you operate with integrity. It’s beauty content, inevitably we’ll be introduced to commodities we may want to consume. That’s on us, for choosing such content. But you follow guidelines and are capable of being critical of products, and holding them to a high standard. You help bring your watchers back to reality, away from the fantasy of the money hungry influencers who will say anything is worth your hard earned cash. These other people are…honestly parasitic. It’s worth commenting on the timing as well. We are in an economic crisis…purchasing power is diminishing, and socially things are pretty bad with neuroses (addiction and insecurity) running rampant among the population. That context makes it so much more sinister and atrocious. I mostly rely on people such as yourself or website reviews from customers (aka people with nothing to gain) when making purchasing decisions. Can’t trust anyone else.
@StateofKait

Thank you! That’s what I’m trying to build, but there are a lot of people who passionately believe you cannot have a beauty channel and have integrity. To each their own. To be honest I don't like watching videos that I know are sponsored. Part of my aversion is the waste of materials companies use for promotional packaging. It's usually over the top and so excessive. Who needs a lip gloss collection packaged in what looks like a set of books? It's really ridiculous. Also, I find if I really have a passion for something it's much more rewarding and satisfying to share with others without gaining monetary benefit from it. I have been considered an influencer in the past so this has been true for me.

I hear ya. I’m actually trying to find a sponsor for all of my videos moving forward so I understand if you need to unfollow. I’m looking for non-beauty sponsors like interesting apps that can be regular sponsors to help keep my channel going. As a viewer, I’ve always considered sponsored content like a tv commercial. If a creator is giving me free content then I have no problem with them having a sponsor, but it better be a good ad or brand.
