Hello Jin. When you cycle from place to place, do you use a map or GPS to move around? Is that how you know which road to cycle on? Pls let me know, thanks. 😊 🙏

When I cycle, I use Google Map and Maps.me app :) I used Baidu when I was in China. I don't use GPS route searching function all day cause it takes too much batteries. I just check the map time to time when necessary.

Hi Jin, I came from the stove review video and would like to give you more info about the fuel situation in China. Petrol fuel is not easy to get from gas stations in some cities (especially in Tebet and Xinjiang, Qinghai province, and probably can not buy them in Beijing) because authorities were afraid extremists were using combustible fuel for terrorist attacks in crowded areas, ie, railway stations or city squares. Plus, now it is autumn, and the wildfire risk is high. If you could understand Chinese(or use a translator), you might have received messages warning people to take caution on using fire. So there are three solutions if the gas station doesn't want to sell fuel to you for cooking. The first one is to use canister fuel. If you bring a gas camping stove, try to find a camping canister (高山气罐), or cartridge canister (卡式炉气罐), and use your gas stove to cook. The second one, the cartridge canister, is easier to get, and most grocery stores sell them. Still, you need a converter to convert the cartridge canister valve to a Lindal valve. If you only bring the MSR Whisperlite International, and if the gas station won't sell gas to you, you could go to the local police station and ask for a permit, called "bulk petroleum permit" or (散装汽油许可证). The permit needs you to fill out your purpose, which is for cooking, and your ID. Some also need to fill out how many Liters of fuel you want to buy in bulk. And you can bring this permit to a local gas station for the fuel. The other solution is to find a hardware or chemical store, or online shopping (Taobao), to search for white gas, (白电油, or 120号白电油). If your last home of stay is kind enough, you might ask them to buy it on Taobao for you and ship it to the post station at your next destination, so you can pick it up there. The white gas (白电油 ,“bai dian you” in Chinese pinyin)is the main type of fuel people use in China for the Coleman liquid fuel lantern and the fuel stoves like your MSR. Alternatively, you could ask for kerosine (煤油). Some hardware or chemical stores also sell them, and your MSR can burn them. Anyways, safe trip!🤠 Note: as @xuexiaoqiang said, you need the local map call 高德地图 or 百度地图 (gao de map, or Baidu map) to navigate in China. This can be easily found in the app store whether you use iPhone or Android. The other foreign map company (Google Maps) won't work in China. So beware of that.

I travelled in China in the mid 1990’s, the toilets were even worse! But it’s good to see things now, I’ve been wondering about bike touring there - its 15 years since I did a tour in Tibet, but it’s so much harder now with visas, etc. Anyway, this is so interesting to see, great video as always. I like how you show the reality of touring, not just the scenic good bits.

Thank you for this fascinating video. I was in China twice - in 2006 and 2011 and each time things were very different. The first time I travelled around from Shanghai to Wuhan to Beijing and back to Shanghai on the old slow overnight trains (the toilets on those were really horrible because the stuff slopped around and came out of the hole as the train moved and the used paper flowed out of the full baskets all over the floor - you could smell them a long way away (the smell is still in my nose now :-)). I also saw a big change in hotel prices - first time I paid around 10$, second time in Shanghai alone I paid 160$ (but maybe that was just Shanghai). Also, the first time there were very many bicycles everywhere but the second time there were many cars and many small motorbikes and scooters (with engines). I also hired bicycles in China and left mine at home as I was worried it would get lost in Chinese luggage systems as I flew there. I am watching your videos with much interest. I have also been to Korea (south) a few times (which seemed very american-influenced to me) and taken bicycles there. Enjoy your travels. :-).

China is nearly the best place to cross the country by bicycle in my world cycling trip. Most of times there are wide shoulders and if there is no shoulder, there is no traffic so it's pretty safe. Most of the city has so big wide shoulder. Only the problem is local people driving so crazily and dangerously as like they have 10 lives.
