Welcome back to The Green Yard and a new segment called, How is it growing? It's a new spin on our previous growing videos but focusing on how certain fruiting and flowering trees have done in certain amounts of time. In this video I bring you an update on our Ice Cream Bean tree. This tree is pretty amazing and I have both made good and bad decisions with it this past year. It did amazing through our ultra cold winter in 2022. It was covered in frost fabric and supplied supplemental heat in the form of C9 Christmas light bulbs. It was a champ through the winter and started putting on lots of new growth in spring. Then I made a mistake, I forgot that this tree has yet to be through a summer since it was planted in September. This is important because, typically for all of my trees, I provide some form of afternoon shade it's first summer. When we started getting hot in July our Ice Cream Bean tree died back to the roots, but is has since sprouted (once it got some supplemental shade) and is around three and a half to four feet tall. Since this Ice Cream Bean tree is a seedling it will grow true to the roots and still produce the same tree. This was like hitting the reset button and all of our mealybug problems have disappeared and I now have an incredibly healthy tree.
