The moving stairs are made up of a number of separate steps. They are occasionally comprised of rubber and feature ridges on the top for enhanced grip. To warn people about standing too close to the edge, the steps have painted borders around them.
These steps have two wheels on the bottom to let them move along while remaining flat while on top. Each step has a step chain attached to the top.
The wheels are guided by a track system. The bottom and top wheels of this track roll as the step chain does.
The steps are kept level by the placement of these tracks.
Usually at the top of the escalator is the motor. This axle and two large gears that pull the step chain must be moved. A roller chain and additional gears are also used to connect it.
These additional gears are joined by a slender chain below. This causes the railing to shift. It's crucial that the railing advances precisely at the same rate as the stairs. All of these components are housed inside the truss, a sturdy metal framework. The steps descend directly below is The Ridges are closely spaced. Without The Ridges, it would be much easy for something to get caught.
