NOTA BENEs (sorry I made them so small): 0:25 These figurines were made by the Nuragic culture of Bronze age Sardinia 1:37 States weren’t as neatly divided by ethnicity as this map depicts; inscriptions of Etruscan names are still found in the colonies they founded, alongside those of later Gaulic and Oscan migrants. The same is true with Italian names in Greek polises 1:41 The state structures of the Samnite peoples were centred more around rural religious shrines than permanently inhabited cities 3:03 Seven kings in 244 years, that's nearly an average reign of 35 years... I don't know man, that seems kind of su- 3:45 Munera usually refers to the social obligation of the elite to hold games and works for the community, public service was how they justified their leading statuses 7:08 Incursions by the less centralised peoples from across the Alps (the Gauls and later the Germans) were a constant issue for the state societies of the wealthy peninsula, it took the full strength of Italy united under the republic to repulse the Cimbrian migration 8:14 The disadvantage of course was that internal factions they didn’t support were made enemies of Rome 9:20 An individual with Latin rights was allowed to marry Roman citizens and trade with them as equals 13:30 The sack of the city by the Senones had permanetly scarred the Roman psyche, their view of the Gauls as savage and exestentially threatening (which Caesar used to justify his wars) was mostly just prejudice. The Gauls built cities and civilisations, and continued to do so under Roman rule 17:54 The confederation connected the elites of the Socii with each other as much as with the Romans. They had created the pan-italian identitiy, framed in opposition to themselves 18:26 This coin shows Roma and Italia side by side, isn't that lovely?

Incredible video and really interesting thesis. People often underestimate how close the Romans came to losing the Social War, which would have drastically changed the course of European history. Hope you produce more of these!
@Arrow_of_Times

Hey thanks so much! Yeah, the social war is a really interesting time period, the rebels were extremely sucessful to start with and though control of the wider empire probably gave Rome the long term advantage, they were definitely extremely threatening.

Hi, I'd just like to say that this is definetly one of the best history youtube videos i have seen. I personally study the geopolitics Reinassance Western Europe and Mesoamerica so you could imagine my surprise when a Roman video arrived on my algorithm. I was interested, took a click, and wow, the way you taught it, easy to digest with your stunning visuals and informative too. I ask of you, PLEASE make more videos talking about History. You have a talent here that should not go to waste.

In pervious iterations of the script I talked about how state societies worked by transferring the prestige individual leaders had to the government structures, which then failed when individual politicians began to have popularity rivalling that of the system overall. Sadly I felt it was too off topic, but good observation.

Hello, since you're just starting off, some friendly advice: when saying something, consider including a footnote that leads to the source you used, listed either in the description or in a pinned comment! This really differentiates channels that simply rely on the ignorance and gullibility of their viewers from ones that respect them and want to nurture curiosity and scepticism (the most important element when addressing historical content on the internet). It is really important to gain the trust of whoever watches your content by allowing them to check the sources you use when they are not sure about what you're saying. For this video, it would be enough if above the nota benes you put time stamps indicating the sources you used. Cheers!
