Dake made an enormous transition from folk style to freestyle in a fashion I have never seen. Most retain their base from freestyle (Sanderson with ankle picks and Burroughs with his signature double legs for example), but Dake seems to have created an entirely different tool box and it has served him well.
@quincyspielberger4366
Жыл бұрын
I don't think so. Dake had his 4 signature folkstyle moves that just didn't transition to freestyle. I think he peaked in 2013. He never leveled up in freestyle. Burroughs beat the poor guy year after year for a full decade until he gave up and went up a weight class and then got beat by J'Den Cox. There are 10 weight classes for world tournaments and only 6 for Olympics. Guys would trade 50 world titles for one Olympic gold. Nolf or Burroughs will block him again next year. He got teched 11-0 in his ONLY Olympic showing...
@joefromcocamo5863

@@quincyspielberger4366 Yes but in all fairness in many of the other matches that Burroughs beat Dake was at a time when Dake wrestled in the challenge tournament and had to win 4 matches in one day against the best guys in the country and then the same night had to wrestle Burroughs in a two out of three. Those were the rules and that is the way it was but I think Dake would have won some of those matches in todays format

@@joefromcocamo5863 Dake even tried to go up a weight class and got beat by J'Den Cox. He is a world champion and a great wrestler just not an Olympic gold medalist caliber athlete. @4:44 Great illustration of what I don't like about international freestyle scoring. Same position, defender never even gets back to ground, and it's two separate scoring moves. When a 10 point gap ends matches, points should not be handed out this way for what is really a single move. Not as bad as a takedown and 4x leg lace roll ending a match, but still... thank you! copying and pasting this from another comment that I replied to: i've heard it called both ways, as I coach i leaned toward "running the pike", as like.. when using a pike (medieval weapon) you would use a chopping motion, and that's how i explained it when it comes to the motion you need to do.. also i didn't feel comfortable using the phrase "running pipe" in front of a room full of kids, regardless if they know what else that term could mean, so i avoided that

That's interesting, I'm going to say that mostly I've heard it referred to as running the pipe (probably 90%+ of the time). (Not saying that running the pike is wrong though, the origin of a lot of these terms is obscure). The explanation I heard is that the motion resembles what oil well workers would do when building a pipeline. They would slide the pipe between their legs to the next worker, who would also slide the pipe etc.

We can’t really say that Dake is one of “the best US wrestlers of all time”. At least not in freestyle.
