I remember "discovering" Gilles Villeneuve on a Canadian Grand Prix broadcast in 1981....he wasn't just a token Canadian at the back of the grid, only mentioned for the local interest, he was a Ferrari Driver who actually won races, most importantly, the Canadian Grand Prix. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to be a fan for long, he died 7 month later.

That then explains why McLaren ran 27-28 in 1990 as Prost won in 1989 and took 1-2 to Ferrari, then with McLaren winning in 1990 the 27-28 combo was returned to Ferrari for 1991

How to fix this numbering system: the constructor champion gets the numbers 0 and two, the drivers champion gets the number 1, the number of the constructors champion becomes unused but not able to be chosen, if the drivers champion left the constructors champions team he would still keep the number one and the new team would have to choose from their numbers so Williams won the championship using 5-6 in 1987 with nelson piquet, those numbers would become unused and they would have to use 0-2 because piquet left to lotus, and lotus would have the car 1-11/12 because they still had the numbers

If you didn’t know, Damon Hill ran car number 0 in 1993 and 1994. That’s because Nigel Mansell (1992) and Alain Prost (1993) left F1 after becoming World Champion. Therefore, if personal numbers weren’t a thing right now, Lewis Hamilton would have driven car number 0 in 2017. This is because Nico Rosberg retired after winning the 2016 World Championship.

Driver numbers were big in NASCAR, but so was the combination of the number, driver, and sponsor/livery. Drivers tended to stay on their cars, with the same sponsor and livery, for years. When a team ran a special paint scheme for a race, it was a big deal. People had a similar connection to the drivers as they did sports teams. It’s not a coincidence that, at the very beginning of the decline for NASCAR, there was a lot more driver turnover, and teams were running multiple sponsors and liveries in a single year. The multiple sponsors was because it became too expensive for most companies to want to pay for a full season, but the different paint schemes was mostly to sell model cars and T-shirts (the number changes came from teams struggling to find permanent replacements for retiring stars, and then teams merging and splitting up and adding cars and dropping cars). I think it was a smart move for Formula 1 to have each driver select a number for their career, but it would probably have more impact if the numbers were actually visible on the car (it was a huge mistake for the WRC to switch to those tiny number plates on the doors). Bring back the big white roundels on the side pods.

The thing that makes TV from the 70s, 80s and 90s look bad is the video tape it was recorded on. Yes, it was much lower resolution back then, but as long as you had a decent signal reception the picture was fine - way better than any recording. The colour of the cars was immaterial to the broadcast, as they came in a variety of shades even while most of us were watching in black and white.

I only later found out that he had the #12 and #2 also, but #27 was what I first remember him by. Honestly, Maldonado choosing 13 was a big brain play... also, I think that NASCAR has the best number system, especially given the fact that the car number is in a large size on the roof and doors of the car, not to mention the paint schemes of the cars that make it even more marketable, so when you see a black Chevrolet with the number three you think Dale Earnhardt Sr. (even though Richard Childress Racing said they would never field a Chevrolet that was predominately black with the number 3 on the doors and roof after Dale's death, they kinda broke that vow with Richard Childress' grandson Austin Dillion who's number 3 Bass Pro Shops/Dow Chemicals Chevrolet Camaro is basically all black, with touches of hunters safety orange when Bass Pro is on the hood and red when Dow is on the hood) When you see a blue and red car with the number 43 and sponsored by STP you think Richard Petty, you see a rainbow colored Chevrolet with the number 24 you think Jeff Gordon

Because the rule was similar to the one from 1996 to 2013, in reality if the driver who won the championship moved to another team he would have taken the number 1-2 to that team, it didn’t matter in which team he won it the previous year. The same thing happened in 1978 and, with the new system, in 1996, 1997 and 2007. If the driver who won the championship retired his former team would have had number 0 and 2 the next year (apart from 1974), it happened in 1993 and 1994

Dale Jr was the most popular driver at the time and there were many fans with 8 tattoos. (NASCAR will give you any number you desire if it isn't owned at the time-Aiden) That's why later in his career I believe him & Mr. Hendrick chose 88 in an attempt to rescue the number 8 tattooed fans---as I understand it.

In terms of counting with NASCAR numbers you can count to 34 pretty easily. This is thanks to recent use of the number 13 by Casey Mears for Germain Racing, recent arrival of the Michael Jordan owned 23XI Racing car sporting his iconic 23 driven by Bubba Wallace and Ricky Craven’s iconic Darlington win with the number 32 keeping to count alive. Unfortunately 35 is barely used (only 322 starts in NASCAR history, less than half the starts of the number 13) and its most “iconic” driver was NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Benny Parsons for all of one season. Not exactly memorable.
