The 4 bar, descending A minor progression goes back to the 1700's in classical music- & that's the ONLY part of that song that's similar- no lyrics were disputed- & Zeppelin's Stairway is a musical masterpiece that starts with the lonely 6 string riff then builds brilliantly to an incredible solo section- & outro & is pretty much the quintessential #1 rock anthem ever- compared to Spirits' Taurus?? C'mon man get real! You don't know music if you think Zeppelin had to steal anything to make a hit song- they were the greatest rock band ever for good reason 🎶

It’s main popularity and endurance owes a lot to being the perfect song for high school djays to play at the end of the high school dance at 4 minutes to midnight and rebelliously break the time barrier by running til a few minutes after midnight. Chaperones and teachers would think it was a lovely song, with young damsels resting their heads on their boys’ shoulders, to end the night and then suddenly a time change after another and every kid on the floor is rocking out to the ending, and then crooning the last line in step with Plant. The kids felt they had broken a rule and so everyone knew that song. It’s a great song but I believe it’s popularity grew for other reasons.
