In Spanish we have two different forms to call it: In Spain, we call it "uve doble" because the letter b is "be" and the letter v is "uve" so this translates to "double v". It's a literal translation from French "double ve". Meanwhile, in Latin America is "doble u" because is a literal translation from English "double u". But in Latin America, the letter b is "be alta", "tall b", and v is "ve baja", "small v". Fun Fact: many words in Latin America are literal translations from English, and in Spain are literal translations frome French. For example, computer in Latin America is "computadora", a literal translation from English and in Spain is "ordenador", a literal translation from French "ordinateur". BTW if I have made some mistakes, please tell me bc i'm not completely fluent in English. TY 1k likes for fun fact 2.

Fun fact; w as a letter actually is two u’s and v’s combined. See in Latin, v and u were the same letter, v. This v was pronounced as u between consonants, and as w before vowels. Over time the w pronunciation become v in Latin and it’s descendants. So v was pronounced as oo in pool and v as in veal. The Germanic languages meanwhile, still had a w sound, and to write it, they placed two v’s together.

It is actually called a "double u" for a very valid reason. In Old English we dropped the runic alphabet and converted to the Latin alphabet instead. We originally had the letter "wynn" which was based off of a rune of the same name because Latin did not have a letter to make the "w" sound (One of two runic based letters at the time, both of which have since been discarded. Thorn [Þ þ] is the other; Thorn ia actually still used in the Icelandic alphabet.) Wynn was then replaced by "uu". Very slowly over a long period of time this "uu" merged, first being written with the tails crossing and then finally being formed into a seperate letter entirely but it never recieved a new name. It is still named after it's origin of "uu".
@lucasnascimentoferreira6048
2 жыл бұрын
That's actually pretty interesting. Did Old English actually used runic letters?
@ry9043
2 жыл бұрын
@@lucasnascimentoferreira6048 Yes, it was. It was written in futhorc. Runic alphabets were the original alphabets of Germanic languages like English, Germanic, and Old Norse. These languages later adopted the Latin alphabet, but did require some extra letters because the languages had some sounds Latin did. Old English had 4 (I have seen both 4 and 5 so I'm not sure which to believe) more letters than Modern English does; these letters being Wynn [Ƿ ƿ], which I discussed, Thorn [Þ þ], Eth [Ð ð], and Ash [Æ æ]. Thorn and Wynn were both converted from runed to the Latin alphabet. Eth and Ash were both Latin letters which got modified. The fifth I have seen sometimes said to be used I cannot remember the name of but I know it appeared Œ œ.

English has way too many letters. Need to dump those letters that we dont use much. why have it U and W and V??? one of these has to go. Also why PH ?? dont we have letter F? Why silent GH? Night?? isnt NITE much simpler? And finally, Double letter LL? really? Lloyd?? how else would we call a guy who name would be with one L? a ste(ph)fen?
@ry9043
2 жыл бұрын
@@ansv3340 English is the most inconsistent written lanuage. We don't have too many letters, I fact I would argue common sounds like "th" should have it's own letter (Also, "th" represents two different sounds. It would be good to have two different letters for them like Old English [Ð ð, Þ þ]). We have some useless letters, and we have some that I would like to add. For example "c" can be replaced by "k" or "s" in most circumstances. The only time it makes a unique sound is "ch", so we should make it represent "ch" instead (or to elimate confusion during a transition we could borrow "ч" from the Cyrillic alphabet). And I feel having an "sh" sound would be beneficial as well (again a potential letter is ш from Cyrillic). But really what would be best is just a complete restructuring of the alphabet. Of course I know this isn't practical, but it would make the language easier. The hardest part about learning English is how inconsistent we pronounce things, so adding consistency would be very beneficial.

We used to call it be labial and ve dental, since you're supposed to use your lips and teeth to pronounce them, respectively But everyone just pronounces V like B, so there's no point So we gave it different names: ve de vaca (similar to V as Victor), ve chica/pequeña (small v) and we finally stuck to uve since it's just quicker

@@rushink en español nunca se ha pronunciado la v como un sonido dental. Existe un dicho de origen desconocido pero muy antiguo (anterior al descubrimiento de América) que dice: "beati hispani quibus vivere bibere est", que se traduce como: "benditos los hispanos para los que beber es vivir" ya que en latín lo único que diferencia estás palabras es el uso de v y b. Además existen varios textos en latín escritos por los nobles visigodos de Hispania que confunden del uso de b y v ya que ya se pronunciaba igual.

As someone who grew up in a mostly Mexican community, but only spoke English, I never understood why they always talked so fast. It wasn't until I took a couple years of Spanish in high school that I realized it's only because they have nearly twice the amount of syllables per word, so in Spanish, they're only speaking the same speed as I would in English. Because there's less syllables in English, and they were used to pronouncing them so fast, they'd speed up incredibly when speaking English.
