Azureecosse WINTER tyres are certainly NOT just for snow. They are significantly better on snow, slush, ice, mud, wet roads and indeed ANY time it is cold. They are much softer rubber and therefore work far better than summer tyres which are hard rubber. BUYING SENSE: If you buy winter tyres in the winter you must obviously expect to pay full price. If you buy them in the summer you should get about 30% discount - I did. I have a Mercedes E-Class and paid £108 per tyre for top class Nokian tyres; money well spent. I guarantee I could drive up the hill in the video with no problems whatsoever - AND stop coming DOWN the hill. Don't forget that braking and steering are just as important as traction - and 4 wheel drive doesn't help one iota with those.
@Nevalti
10 жыл бұрын
Azureecosse A lot of people don't realise the HUGE benefit of soft rubber. If in doubt - ask a Formula 1 driver! As for 'need', many of us country-folk get up before dawn and drive many miles on un-salted roads. We 'need' the best tyres possible. Most town dwellers have NEVER experienced black ice and probably don't even know what it is. Snow: A car with narrow tyres cuts through snow and can get a reasonable grip - that is why the Fiesta (?) in the video did well. A car with wide tyres floats on a bed of compressed snow and may sit there helplessly. Stiff treads, such as on high speed rating tyres, low profile tyres and run-flat tyres make it even worse - which is why BMWs are often struggling the most.
@Nevalti

Azureecosse Oh dear, one of those strange people who think they knows it all. Apparently you are here to lecture us - about your OPINIONS rather than facts. I suggest that you refrain from making silly assumptions young lady and confine yourself to facts. The FACTS are that winter tyres are safer in cold weather. THAT is what they are designed for. Their performance in snow is just one benefit out of many. IF you can think of any significant disadvantage to using winter tyres, in the winter, someone may be interested to hear your opinion.

+nightflyer1100 Snow in London (belive it or not) is actually very rare, not because the weather it's mild due to the Gulf stream and low pressures from N Atlantic, but also since it's a big city with too much heating elements under the ground which will melt snow even if it's below -5 Celsius. In other words people in London are far from used to drive in snow, so don't blame them!
@160619891000

Faronstream I blame them because they should be using winter or all season tires from mid November till mid March ish. The last time I went to Toyota Kingston, the rep tried to convince me I don't need winter tires since temperatures never go below 7 degrees Celsius in London. This was in October this year. I asked him if he realises that the previous day it was 2 degrees in 5:30 am when I started driving to work and he said he didn't know because he wakes up at 8 o'clock because he starts work at 9 in the morning. People are stupid, ignorant, stubborn and ill educated in London, this is why it's a disaster on the roads when it's icy, snowy or just cold. So many accidents due to summer tires becoming harder and increasing breaking distance when temperature is below 7 degrees... It's just ridiculous!

It is 2016 now and tire (tyre) retailers sell tires that are mid-way between 3-season and winter tires; softer than 3-season tires, but not as soft as pure winter tires. They are almost as good as winter tires, but in the summer they don't wear away so quickly like winter tires would, so they can be kept on the car all winter and all summer long, no changing of tires needed. These tires are called "ALL WEATHER" tires. I live in Ontario Canada, and here its suicide to drive in the winter without winter tires. Those 'All Weather' tires are just not good enough here.

Pointer1: Get going from 2nd gear, hardly any gas. You don't want to break traction as that will polish off the snow under the tyre and turn it into ice. Ride the clutch on the verge of stalling. 2: If at all possible don't stop if going uphill. 3: Get as much weight as possible on the drive axle. Put your mother-in-law in the boot if it's a RWD and ask 2 folks to sit on your wheel arches if it's FWD (just to get going). 4: Get a Subaru Impreza or Mitsubishi Evo and you don't need any help :))

Along with my post about Winter Tyres, they are not just for snow/ice but for all driving conditions when the temperatures are below +7oC ( which in the UK means going to work and coming home in the evening during the winter months are well below +7oC so will massively help ). Also a winter tyre doing 30mph will stop 11m shorter than a normal tyre doing 20mph at +7oC or below......which could mean the difference between life or death.....or at least an expensive insurance claim.

Winter tyres aren't just for snowy conditions.. they're for when the temperature on the road is below freezing and up to 10C. Because summer tyres harden in cold conditions so they can't form a connection to the road properly.. hence whey they slip etc. winter tyres are made of a softer compound that flexes and the tread bonds better to the road surface. So winter tyres should be used between Nov - March. when the temperature is likely to be below 10 C.

It's not for just "one week a year" winter tyres are when the temperature is below zero and 10 C.. because summer tyres (regular tyres) work better when the temp is above 10 C and the roads are dry. Typically the temperatures between Nov & March are between below 0 C - 10 C. Are when winter tyres should be used. because cold weather hardens the rubber on summer tyres, hence less grip as the tyre is unable to form a good grip and bond to the road surface.

rubbish, they help in all winter conditions, not just snow and most of the country had more than a day of snow this winter and there may be more to come. They definitely are worth it. They help on icy roads to and lower stopping distances on wet roads when temps are below 8°c.

Hi Azureecosse, Cont.... driving in the Savoie part of the French Alps ( I accept there are vast differences between the Alps and the UK ) , but I would never drive in winter condition's in either without winter tyres just from the breaking under control ( stopping straight and not spinning the car on ice , snow etc ) and the reducing of breaking distances side of things.After all a winter tyre at 30mph will stop 11m shorter than a normal tyre at 20mph on ice,snow and wet roads below +7oC.Cont.

The authorities should have sent a snowplough up there to put a stop to all this nonsense.

"That's a woman innit?" "Dunno..." "...yeah, that's a woman." STICK IT IN THIRD PEOPLE, USE THE CLUTCH. Christ, what is it with us British people and fundamental inability to drive in snow? (Hint: it's the pisspoor quality of tuition and complete lack of adverse conditions training required to pass a driving test.)

2.40 "they just need to get their Golf parked up thats what they need to do" No they need to have decent snow tyres for that time of year and none of them would be stuck

The problem is most of these people were at work when the snow started and in little time there was lots of snow, you cant blame them for trying to get home, it doesnt help that the road is on a camber

Probably most of these car drivers had their ESP turned on which is not helpful on snow/ice and they probably have automatic shifter which they didn't put in manual mode and start off with 2nd gear.

Wayyy oh wayyyy!!!! My owd maYYYYns a DASTMAN, he wear a DASTMANS hAT! mAppet! They need winter tyres or at very least drop the psi to 15-20 rather than 30-35. Additianally - front wheel drive, go in reverse - makes a massive difference. Idiots in the vans just wrecked the road for anything including 4wd vehicles too! Found your video very entertaining guys :D

Funny video. Message has to be: Buy a spare set of wheels with winter tyres! They work better in winter even if it's not snowing. It's no more expensive in the long run as it saves wear on your summer tyres and you can sell them if you buy a different car. Alternatively you can just risk crashing you car, damaging someones elses car or worse. Also, a FWD or RWD car with winter tyres will probably perform better in the snow than a 4WD with summer tyres. Money well spent I reckon
