Don't know how poisonous berries act in combination with the weak stomach trait, but normaly (unless they changed it in this build) you can survive a poisonous berry by eating one and then waiting, if it makes you sick you can stay in bed and heal up, this way you slowely figure out which berries are poisonous and which are not without the book.

Deleted my response instead of editing :(. Did some testing with an all negative trait character (except for illiterate and deaf), he started at full health and didn't have any buffs/debuffs except for stress and panic. Results: 1 berry: did completely nothing, no sickness, no damage. 2 berries: made me sick, survived by resting the moment queazy popped up, sickness got to the next stage during sleep but was gone when I woke up, only lost a little bit of health and didn't use any food or health buffs. I also survived by eating 1 lemon grass the moment it showed up, nothing else, it just instantly cured it. 3 berries: made me sick real quick, I tried surviving by maxing food buffs and sleeping but it killed me within hours. I did manage to survive by eating 1 lemon grass the first time queazy popped up and another one the second time queazy popped up, so 2 lemon grass total instantly cured it. Conclusion: Lemon grass OP. Best way to test poison: heal up, be ready to sleep (sitting down wasn't needed for me to lose stress, just standing and doing nothing did the trick, but any right mouse click started the stress gain again (strange)) and you should be able to survive, lemon grass is a strong backup. Since eating one berry doesn't do anything you could make a berry type rotation and only eat one type a day, but that does seem a bit risky.

Just for a bit of clarification. Fat people can be more susceptible to starvation than thin people. It's a misconception that starving mean massively underweight, it isnt that at all, it's the condition your body goes into as a response to not meeting its basic needs, so since fat people burn calories faster than skinny people their starvation floor is a lot higher than thin peoples so when food is absent it's far easier for them to slip into the starvation condition. Also for clarification starvation causes people to become a mix of symptoms like irritable, anxious, lethargic, depressed and tired, along with having increased susceptibility to other conditions due to not getting enough vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber and oils.

Both right and wrong here. All you need is protein and fat to live and thrive. Your body at first will burn clucose made inside the body from carbs then it will eat fat then muscles. Your body will during times of starvation switch off from clucose and restructure itself to eat fat more efficently. It does this just because clucose is an easier form of energy, compared to fat. The reason why you can't burn both fat and clucose at you body's most efficent rate is because the pathways and stuff inside you that breaks down these things can only do one. When I say starvation I mean lack of carbs which is our main source of energy. Another drawback of a mainly fatburning body is that it takes longer to gain energy from it. Doing explosive exercises like sprinting, throwing and such are harder, you become easily exhausted. But running marathons, mountain hiking and other low intensity tasks are alot easier since you have overall more fat than you can ever store clucose. So no, as long you have fat reserves(like a obese person would) and keep using your muscles, you will keep them. Your body is efficient like that, it eats up and takes away everything you do not use, but will prioritise to keep everything you do use.
@MrEmiosk
3 жыл бұрын
@@ambiguousamphibian Your body will only eat your muscles when you starve when you have no more fat to burn. It is when you stop moving, stop using your muscles that your body will start to eat them. Our bodies are efficient like that.

Another problem with running a fat// protein metabolism in humans is it is suboptimal in thay it produces byproducts that are toxic. At normal metabolic rates the liver can deal with them but when all energy is drawn from fatty acid// protein catabolism you get a build up of products that make the blood very acidic. This is what kills diabetics typically
@warrenwarren7973

So I'm seeing a lot of "muscles are eaten as energy" in this comment section, which kind of isn't true? From what I remember of anatomy class, your body will digest muscle tissue (from any muscles, including your heart, which is obviously life-threatening) when you're starving because you need protein to keep every cell in your body alive, not just as an energy source. Like yeah the energy is important to keep you alive, but every part of your body is built and maintained with protein, so if you don't have any you start dying. However, if you don't have enough body fat you'll start to die anyway because your body needs a certain amount to function. Athletes pay a lot of attention to body fat percentage because if males get below 4%, if memory serves, they run the risk of severe health conditions whereas with females they can't go below 6% without danger. I assume the aim for realism present in this game is why you can die from both, instead of only dying from getting hungry or whatever.

Yes, an organism will use body fat to survive, but it cannot just take it all and supply all of its needs like it's not a problem. Starvation may cause you to develop an ulcer. And with a weak stomach, it probably will. The body is used to consuming food, and without it, the bile will start burning stomach instead of what used to be coming into it. I have a weak stomach. And even if I do not eat for 8-10 hours, I get nauseated. It can cause me to vomit (yes, with an empty stomach). And it probably will cause me to be unable to eat spicy and fried food for a while. I will "feel" my stomach, while usually, it is not the case and not supposed to happen. I can survive not eating for a bit. But recovering will be hard. And it was a few times already throughout my life. tl;dr - to survive starvation, you need more than just water and body fat. Too long without food will kill you even if you are still fat.
@argentcosmonautmobile5672

18:00 From my understanding, the fats you're burning in your body are converted for your body to actually run. However, those fats your body is burning are basically condensed carbs and lack essential nutrients that your body needs to run, such as iodine, iron, magnesium, vitamins and other essential nutrients. But, there are events where people who were obese took extreme weightloss actions where they subsisted off supplements, water and their body fat. But in general, you should be able to burn off alot of fat while starving, from my understanding, at least till you begin running out of essential nutrients in your body to actually operate organs. But, I'm not a nutritionist, my grandfather is and that's pretty much my only fount of information in that regard that I come in regular contact with.

The logic behind dying without using all you stored body fat is, as far as I remember, the fact that while just pure fat does store energy that will keep you alive. It can’t supplement certain nutritional requirements. The best example is that humans don’t naturally produce vitamin C so we need to eat it. And if you don’t it doesn’t matter how fat you are, you’ll get scurvy.

15:36 I know of another facility on the south eastern side of the map. It’s a rail yard that also has tons of warehouses and large rooms. But the problem with that facility is that all the buildings are quite spaced out and there is very little materials or goodies to scavenge. I know this because one of my characters got stranded on that side of the map after his car broke down and I was stuck in that area for 3 days before I finally built up the courage to walk to the next town over. It took him 2 days of walking before he finally made it and he was completely out of supplies after just a half day (there was basically nothing to go with at those warehouses). But if you wanted to go for a more sustained game it would probably be good since there is tons of large open spaces and many of the box cards will spawn crates with seed packets in them.

The definition of mental illness is an inability to respond to your immediate environs - whether that's being slowed by depression or having full-on hallucinations. People don't "get over" neurotic fears or phobias - it's good to master regular fears, but if your brain no longer cares what you think or whether say, the spider actually does anything at all - welp, you're no longer giving the orders around here - having a functional response just isn't on the menu. That's what makes a fear into an illness. Fear's whole purpose is to be so aversive that you run the hell away from whatever inspired it, it causes direct physical pain and - with time and patience - injury. So there are actually some very compelling reasons for a person to stay the hell away from that. It's like the difference between clipping your nails and amputating your own toe, minus even the miniscule possibility that you're on an arctic expedition and the toe really has to go.

Irl you don’t burn the fat when you’re starving iirc. Most of that weight is in the mass in your fat, which you don’t burn. Sure, it’s sitting there dormant, but it won’t all immediately burn off and feed you when you’re needing it. It starts taking from your muscles due o the proteins there and that’s what makes you weak when you’re starving.

17:42 to answer your question about not losing fat. The human body burns muscle first and then fat, Fat is a reserve of excessive protein and nutrients, it essentially is wasted energy and is stored. When you're hungry the first thing your body does is eat through your muscle mass as muscle is a healthier reserve of protein and nutrients. If you do see people who are starved they have no muscle mass but manage to keep a high body fat ratio.

17:42 Starvation can be different for different people. If you take the average 300 lb fat person, they may die from malnutrition long before they even shed 100 lbs, maybe even shedding less weight. If you eat literally nothing at all, you aren't getting any nutrients. All you have is stored calories. Your body will also tend to burn muscle along with the fat, which is cruel irony. Its kind of hard to get your body to burn ONLY fat from starving; this is a big reason why starvation diets don't work. You will probably start getting extreme muscle cramps after maybe 3 weeks of not eating anything, maybe sooner. I was always taught that in an extreme survival situation, you can expect to make it about 30 days without any food at all, and only 3 days without any water. I've actually gone 3 days with literally no water or food before (yes, i almost died) and its pretty intense. do not recommend. I was extremely sick, and by the third day i was trying to eat and drink anything i could find, but i would literally instantly throw it back up. i had to get an IV at the ER and i took something like 3 banana bags before i peed once. Of course you don't just drop dead after 3 days exactly, some people will last longer or maybe even not as long. i think the record is something like a week for someone stranded in a desert

When it comes to dying of starvation, your body fat doesn't store every essential vitamin and mineral, so if you're eating literally nothing, you can realistically die in a matter of a week or two, almost regardless of your weight. Of course, your instinct to eat will be so strong that you might start eating parts of your own body before that happens... There are known cases...
@oatenn-o

If anyone still watching this is wondering, the reason humans can't survive off of their body fat alone is because food provides essential vitamins for bodily processes. You may have the sheer calories stored on you, but the lack of vitamins is what causes malnutrition. I would not advise anyone do this, but it IS possible to live solely off of body fat and vitamin supplements. Edit: In real life, that is. I don't know about in the game.

You can live off of your own fat just fine in terms or energy, but it also takes stuff to continually repair your body and allow it to perform many functions. Cells still have to continue dividing, which requires certain proteins, fats, and vitamins which are exclusive to your diet.

Yeah, your body will cannibalize itself to the point of being unable to move due to the muscles being eaten away if you're starving

I know that this is very late and someone might have already mentioned this. But when it comes to starvation the human body, especially the brain, is just not very logical. It knows that it can sustain itself for a while on the body fat. But the single largest concentration of fat is the brain itself. And the brain will try to burn any other source of fat but the body will make use of any fat. Brain included.

I remember playing zomboid back in 2018 and having no clue how to play the game like the controls yet knowing what I should and shouldnt do since I am somewhat a veteran when it comes to survival or even just zombie games either 3rd person ,1st person ,shooter ,survival ,horror ,wave shooter I have experience with just about every genre with zombies nothing strange though like the odd zombie dating games I have come across which just strikes me to think "is necrophelia becoming more common or is my affinity for the undead causing these to pop up"

That's not really how fat works. Just because one person has body fat doesn't mean he has essential minerals stored. Also if you lose weight too fast it can cause huge deficiencies in vitamins, since there are some we can't make in our bodies.

a fat person can die of starvation technically malnutrition due to not replenishing key vitamins, amino acids or minerals that the body needs to continue to function.

The item durability in Project Zomboid is ridiculous. Irl you can use a single axe for years to chop down wood without once repairing or sharpening it yet in this game, you swing your axe like two and a half times towards _rotting_ flesh and it suddenly broke.

Although I appreciate the separate hunger and calories mechanic, they should really change it so that certainly if you are obese or overweight, but even if you are normal weight realistically, you can't immediately die of hunger. Keep the hunger pain debuffs so you have strong incentive to eat, but it's ridiculous to be 200-300lbs and drop dead from not eating. There was that famous case in the 60s of a morbidly obese man who under the supervision of a doctor made it an entire year of fasting just consuming vitamins, electrolytes, yeast, and tea.

17:40 If your body would only need fat and water, then you could indeed live long from being obese. But the body needs more then that. The mere existence of diseaes like Scorbut indicates that we need more then "fat and water". And that is not even getting into stuff like Salts or Sugar, things our body can not store a lot off. Fat only helps if you have issues finding something big to eat.

Irl, dying of starvation means a heart attack. As your body breaks down, any break down of the heart tissue is fatal and will kill you. You do burn fat first. However a lack of electrolytes will make you exhausted and very prone to passing out with any moderate activity. Note, JUST AS DEADLY, is eating food after a long fast. You literally die of poisoning as your body cannot break down the food. Lipid soluble vitamins are likely the culprit id guess. I’ll double check and post a link to a source in a second. TLDR You will survive for days or weeks before dying of starvation. Just be careful when eating again to eat slowly.

So refeeding syndrome and refeeding edema are things to worry about. Both can put you in the hospital or in the ground. Also you burn about half a pound of fat a day if you want to calculate how long you’d last.
