Hey Ramsey, btw ur videos have been an inspiration to me man. I have a question since I wanna get into mma. I’m currently doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai but I really wanna be able to make it on my college division 3 wrestling team so I can improve my athleticism and takedowns. The problem is that I never had the luxury of being able to do wrestling in my teenage/high school years since I went to a private school. So I’m not sure if I’ll even be good enough to make the team. Private wrestling clubs that are for adults too are really rare from my research in my area at least. So If I take perhaps a few private lessons and work out hard can I make the team.... if not would judo be a good supplement for throws and takedowns thx

I love the story of Roy. About 16 years ago a friend and I went together to our very first boxing session, a boxing gym at the local police boy's club in a fairly reasonably-sized city. At the end of that very first session the coach asked us both if we'd fight that weekend. Not that it would have mattered, but even in that first training session all we did was punch the heavy bag without instruction, then 3 minutes on a punch shield, all without instruction. Oh and a jog at the beginning. The heavybag pretty much consisted of us trying to punch it as hard as we could with big rights, "look how hard we can kinghit the heavy bag". After the heavybag we did one 3-minute session on a punch shield with the coach, going as hard as we could again without instruction, until blown. It was then that he asked us if we'd fight that weekend. Suffice to say we didn't agree to fight that weekend, and didn't go back to the gym. Even with zero boxing training, we knew we were the opposite of ready to fight that weekend. Imagine what we would have looked like that weekend in the ring, never had our first lesson on how to jab, never had our first lesson on footwork, hadn't yet received any instruction on anything at all. Not to mention no boxing conditioning. My internal jaw dropped when he asked us if we'd fight that weekend. I thought he looked like an old wise tough and experienced coach, but whatever the case, obviously not too clever, or ethical. How's that for an "Are you ready" situation lol
@oldmate1342

Lol wise choice. What an awful coach. I presume they needed someone to fill in for a fight short notice, and thought some dumb kid would agree to it and be a punching bag.
@dylan.j.schreiner

He asked and you declined, simple as that; some people are eager to fight, others aren't. If you went there at the beginning of the week you'd have a few days to learn some stuff. Experience is useful and having a reference like that in your memory would be useful to you while training. There's nothing unethical about it either, you went there to learn how to hurt people and how to take hits; training to hurt people is an ethical condundrum for some, and who knows what kind of person you are but they are training you anyway. Training others is more of an ethical question than asking you if you want to fight that weekend. A refereed match you can quit at any time is not a big deal, people get into fights and fight their friends outside of matches and gyms, and you made the decision to learn how to take hits and dish them out from a coach that can use what they see from your match. These sensibilities of yours are hardly objective, they make no sense in the context.
@maxanderson3733
2 жыл бұрын
@@dylan.j.schreiner It makes plenty of sense. Only an idiot would try to have someone fight in an actual match the *very same week* they _started boxing._ It takes months to potentially years before an average person is truly ready for their first match. Attempting to throw them in the ring before that time comes is *_absolutely_* unethical. The fact you don’t understand that simple concept says more about you than the OP. Who by all rights dodged a massive bullet.
@dylan.j.schreiner

@@maxanderson3733 Depends on the person and the competition. A lot of gyms don't have daily neck training even; do you think after 3 years of punching they should get punched in the head if their necks are still toothpicks? We trained basically me and my coach 4-5 times a week and my coach wanted me to fight after like 6 months of training.. I even signed up and everything.. It got canceled due to Covid-19.. Then I moved a city over and started doing kickboxing classes there.. I was NOT ready LOL.. I would have gotten knocked out probably, especially since I was told later on that many competitors often lie about the amount of experience they have before their first fight (they say they have less)..

Hey, Ramsey, I'm a new subscriber. Quick question: Thoughts on the Edson Barboza/Kevin Lee fight from last weekend? I'm a fan of Barboza, but he was handily defeated. do you think he has a feasible chance of improving his grappling and ground technique in his UFC career, given that he's such a dominant striker at his age? If an all-out fight critique isn't really your cup of tea, maybe a refined question: is there a point in training or career when muscle memory is too dominant to overcome?

I am asking this because while I know it is not possible to learn fighting at home, there are several KZitem channels with boxing and grappling tutorials which are rather in depth compared to MMA striking videos on KZitem. For example, there are like 8 Minute long Jab tutorials whereas a head kick tutorial is usually 2 or 3 minutes long. Sorry if I am wrong, but I do not think a head kick is so much simpler than a jab.

Brain damage sucks. That's not even an opinion, that's a fact. Limit your hard sparring. Do lots of light technical sparring. Wear a mouthguard when you spar. Pay attention to your coach like your life depends on it, because it does. Go to technique class religiously. Don't skip strength and conditioning. Work hard like your life depends on it, because it does. Avoid as many hits to the head as you can in a fight. Give yourself options to finish fights early (eg: control and submission or control and tko) Focus on techniques that minimize damage. Have your corner man watch as your opponent wraps his hands to avoid any loading of the wraps or gloves. if you suspect foul play, speak up sooner than later.

I am loving this channel. Again, you are spot on. Boxing is 99 percent mental and 1 percent physical. Ever hear the term hungry fighter? Every boxing champ start out hungry. That's mindset. That's mental. You get knocked down you don't get up unless you have that hunger, that mental toughness. If you have to ask that question, the answer is no. You are not ready. An old Ronin combat fighter once told me, that if I get in a physical confrontation, that I have lost. Because you always lose something of yourself, even if you win. That the true fighter is the one who defeats his opponent before physical contact. It took me many years to figure out what he meant. You don't fight because you want to. You fight because you have to. That's why retired boxers keep unretiring, even when they are too old and scarred. They have to.

I watched your video named as "Strength Training for Combat Sports". My question is what kind of traning program is good for those kind of sports apart from main compound lifts(Squat,Bench,Deadlift,Overhead Press e.t.c.). For example for balance and knee stability there is a forgotten muscle which is Gluteus Medius. What kind of extra strength exercise should we add to traning for better kicks or punches for more power output? If you answer those questions and explain what kind of strength program would be suitable, i would be glad.

Ramsay, amazing content, I would have a question. I had a situation some time ago. I was with my girlfriend at the bus stop. One slightly dizzy guy started talking to me, trying his best to provoke me, calling for a fight, looking for reasons to attack me. Of course I stayed calm, tried talking my way out. He followed us to the bus. Eventually started harrasing the driver, he called the police, they picked him up and found a massive knife on him. You said multiple times to run away if someone pulls a knife, what if I am not alone and I can't leave my company? Another situation: I was with my mother alone in the street, it was late, 5-6 younglings started following us, eventually walking into me trying to catch my hands, pushed my mother away and went after me. Luckily I was able to stop a car on the road and lost them. I should have ran away, but she is not able to run as fast as me, I could not leave her. What to do when running is not an option and attacker obviously has a cold weapon? Thank you.

I really love your videos Mr. Dewey! I have another question, if you don't mind. I'm having trouble with getting my students to respect and listen to me. I was specially chosen a few months ago to help teach classes with the head instructor. I'm a very timid and anxious person, so I have a hard time controlling the students. I'm not physically intimidating (I'm tall and skinny, with very little muscle), I'm not an adult, and I'm not a black belt yet (but I'm testing for my red belt tomorrow, so that's cool!). I have the hardest time with teaching the younger students, and with teaching adults. I'm not sure if there's much you can do to help, but do you have any advice on being stern and standing your ground without being/coming across as mean? Sorry I've been having so many questions, but thank you!

Joaquin Espinosa it really depends, how in shape are you? (Did you start lifting a bit? Can you run a couple miles or more?). How many times do you train per week? Do you also do weight lifting and running regularly?

Oh yeah, that's kind of nervous tension is inevitable... but, here's a quick tip for you: breathe- out, not in. Focus on the way you exhale. You will move the way you breath- the way you exhale. You inhale automatically whether you want to or not, but you must take conscious control over the way you exhale. Exhale percussively when you strike. Exhale the same way when you get hit. Exhale with your big movements. Connect your breath and your voice to your movements when you fight/spar/train. Hmm, I have always wondered. Is it going to be possible, if I put the work in, for me to take a fight? I'm talking about weight limits. I'm 6' 2'' and built very heavily. If I remove my body fat percentage from my current weight, I still end up at 177lbs, and I know 0% of body fat is both unexpectable and unhealthy (especially with an oestrogen base). I've heard the absolute maximum allowed for mixed martial arts is 165lbs. I've heard of openweight bouts being a thing, but have no idea when or where these occur, nor exactly how you'd obtain one. I'd probably be one of these "cross it off the bucket list" sorts, except that if I'm going to do it at all I'd want to do it properly (not sloppily like that "white collar" thing you describe... because if it's like that then it's not really much of a boast in the first place so what's the point), and I'd also not necessarily discount the possibility that I might enjoy it and want to do it again. In fact I'm imagining that I would enjoy it. Obviously... that's just pure imagination, until such a time as I actually step in there and know what it means to fight. I guess, I gave up on this idea a long time ago but it's always been in the back of my mind nagging away, and I'm just wondering if it's a pipe dream worth holding on to, hoping that some day I'd get an opportunity, or if I basically stand no chance whatsoever of being let in. Not that I think that's the only value to martial arts, of course - in fact, I've recently started doing martial arts again, regardless of these competitive barriers, just for its own sake. Only thinking about this desire I have, and if I should basically just let it go. How unrealistic is it, I guess is what I'm asking? Already knowing that it's somewhat unrealistic, but not how much.

MMA has weight classes ranging from atom weight (105 lbs) all the way to super heavyweight (no weight limit). While the UFC only has a few weight classes for women, many smaller pro MMA promotions feature women’s bouts in all weight classes. A female friend of mine fights as a heavyweight (265 lbs) Just shop around a little for fight promotions that feature your weight class. They are out there.

That's very awesome news! When I get properly back into martial arts (budget allowing) I'll certainly ask about that then. Good to know they are out there, I had just imagined they weren't. :)

Ramsey Dewey yeah man I thought it would be a fun little hypothetical since you do similar topics. As a martial artist, I feel you would truly appreciate dragonball. Although I'm surprised you haven't heard of it considering it's one of the longest running the shows of all time. Take 6 months to watch all 40 years of the experience and get back to me at your leisure. Actually side note, I'd like to know your opinion on ki energy in general at some point as well.

Hi Ramsey, my name is Mohammed. I've been watching a lot of your videos recently and I really love them because there is more content and stories in your videos than would be apparent by the title, so I even enjoy watching your 20 minute videos. I did a month of boxing training and started to learn some things, but I decided to sign up at an MMA gym. As I'm a beginner this gym requires me to attend two classes a week: 1 for BJJ and 1 for Muay Thai both of which I have never studied before, so I'm quite excited to learn more about both Martial Arts. But there is one aspect that I find kind of unnatural though it makes sense in both boxing and muay thai is that you have to tuck your chin down to your chest so that you decrease the chance of getting hit there. Though I understand the concept and I do it when I'm told, to me it doesn't feel natural (though I'm sure with practice it will be), but I wanted to ask you is tucking the chin away actually crucial or is it just taught out of dogma? Personally I feel that when my head is in its natural position I feel looser and more able to react to things like punches and kicks. It seems that there is some loss of "looseness" when we tuck our chin in versus having your head in its normal position where we are more able to pay attention to your surroundings. What do you think?

So far, that's only happened in exhibition matches. There's no lack of competition for them, so they don't need to fight each other.

I'm thinking that once I'm starting to get back to Martial Arts, instead of going to Kyokushin or Kickboxing, the best will be just pure boxing. I got some kicks under my belt, but my hands are a lot worse. I think if I did that for a while, first years at first, then I could go do Kyokushin/Kickboxing. If we look at the UFC people with higher boxing skills tend to win - I think, not sure, but it looks like. Said that, I think beeing an elite, or the high level boxer would be beneficial, and then do legs. Ultimatelly it doesn't hurt to train few, 3 types of kicks or whatever, that are effective at the end of the boxing session. I did MA for 4 years and it's just... spreading too thin. Better get good at one thing first, then do all at once. Once you have the solid foundation of all... then sure, it won't matter as it will be natural to you. I know that with just hands I would get outboxed, but at least I have legs and kneed/elbows and stuff... but again, getting boxing skill would make the upper game a lot safer, especially knowing how to prevent brain damage and stuff - meaning not getting hit. I'm pretty sure with boxing background, in an average Martial Art dojo or whatever, you will be able to pretty much outbox the oponent, although with kicks is a bit different... and in some rules you can't hit the face, but still.

As someone who is unfit and over weight, is it a good idea to start in a martial art to get fit. Or should that be something to embark on once weight has been lost? By the way love the videos!

Start training as soon as you can. Martial arts is an excellent way to get fit. My job is to train people to win fights- for some people, their fight is in a cage. For others, their fight is in a ring. And for many, their fight is life itself. Keep me posted on your training!
