Malaysia's electronic industry is hailed as amongst the country's drivers for growth. Do you think they can continue to compete globally? Let us know down below!

Yes, Malaysia ideal economy weightage should be 60% Services, 25% Industry and 15% Agriculture. Malaysia agriculture has so much potential, because we have a lot of land and can leverage on advanced technology to grow food, and export to other countries.
@Balangair1

It will. I actually sounded out my friends worried about families who are growing oil palm. I told them palm oil is a commodity that is so exposed to external vagaries. And that as a country with a small land mass, and high agrarian labour costs, we should slowly wind down the growing of palm oil and exit the industry. Leave it to countries like Indonesia. We can't compete and should just concentrate on manufacturing and services. I got a lot of knocks that day.

Malaysia is actually slowly moving from over reliance on its natural resources & foreign investments on manufacturing to the financial services, which is more lucrative. For example it's already has a strong and comprehensive Islamic financial system with a robust business driven regulatory regime and legal framework to be the leading global hub for Islamic finance.

Finance is growing and yes there is less reliance on commodities lately. But Malaysia is still very reliant on FDI. Recently there is a huge investments inflow into Malaysia mostly manufacturing. The Tun Razak Exchange project was developed with the purpose of attracting international banks to invest in Malaysia, so if anything, even the finance industry will be more dependant on FDI in the future. And relying on FDI isnt necessarily a bad thing. I mean the example of Singapore, Netherlands, Ireland, Hong Kong, etc proves that being too dependent on FDI isn't necessarily a bad thing.

As much the positive tone in the video and in the comments. Semiconductor is a large and complex chain industry. M'sia is not really at the forefront of this industry. It is mostly the backend of the chain, the packaging of the finish wafer chips, testing etc. this lower end of the Semicon chain have very small margins hence why companies "outsourced" these backend task to lower wage countries in south east asia. It is still way too far behind US, Japan, EU to benefit any growth of the semiconductor industry. Major money maker such as foundries and fabless design house are more concentrate elsewhere

Low-profit low-tech manufacturing cannot exist in expensive countries, but high-profit high-tech manufacturing can exist in expensive countries. But Malaysia is not an expensive country, it is a medium country, so it can have some medium profit medium technology manufacturing
