But there's something missing that I've always been wanting to understand, and so hopefully you'll cover it in a follow-up video as other's have requested: How do the synchromeshes work (maybe with a tie-in with rev-matching / double-clutching)? And maybe in another video: How do dual-clutch transmissions work? And maybe yet in another video: How do modern automatic transmissions shift gears smoothly without jolting the car between shifts? Hope that's not asking for too much. Thank you for your educationally addicting videos!

One nice feature of a transaxle is not needing to balance the first three ratios around having a 1:1 4th gear. This should allow a manufacturer more flexibility in selecting ratios that are closer to ideal for the engine/final drive combination they want to run.
@davidgruen7423
5 жыл бұрын
aussiebloke609 that’s no the case, the reason is because transaxle is a much more compact unit that can fit in a small compact car, everything is “integrated”
@aussiebloke609
5 жыл бұрын
I suspect you've missed my point. Classic-style manual gearboxes always had a 1:1 ratio where the input shaft was locked directly to the output shaft. This is not the case with most modern transaxles - nary a 1:1 in sight these days - probably because to lock the input to the output in the traditional way requires that they be in line with each other, and that usually means the power output has to be at the far end of the gearbox - which obviously won't work for FWD. There's no reason they can't use 1:1 simply by using the same size gear on both input and output shafts - but they don't.
@davidgruen7423
5 жыл бұрын
aussiebloke609 transaxle do have direct drive, but due to the fact that transaxle doesn’t have a counter shaft input and output shaft can’t be on the same plane as a transmission, so it has to use an extra gear to make that 1:1 ratio, however the problem with 1:1 ratio is that you want to avoid whole number ratio in gearbox because that way the same tooth would always mesh with another certain tooth every revolution, causing pre mature wear. In fact you probably noticed that all of the gear ratio is not a whole number, but rather with a decimal, that way the same tooth won’t always wear on the same tooth on the other gear, but rather take turns, so a defect in one particular gear wouldn’t escalate wear on one spot, but average out in all other gears. In manual transmission 1:1 ratio can be simply locked by locking the input and output shaft together since they are on the same line, there is no gear mesh (except freewheeling gears) happening so a 1:1 gear ratio would not cause extra tooth wear.
@aussiebloke609
5 жыл бұрын
I do understand transaxle layout and how hunting gearsets behave. You're still missing the original point - that it's nice for the designing engineers not to be restricted by that 1:1 ratio, as a classic gearbox layout inherently is. But they don't generally actually have direct drive (or a 1:1 ratio gearset) - which you claimed - and for the exact reason you gave, the lack of hunting in that ratio's gearset, so it seems you've kinda contradicted yourself a little there.
@davidgruen7423
5 жыл бұрын
aussiebloke609 the thing is that they do want a 1:1 ratio but there is no way to get that exact 1:1 ratio without causing more wear, that’s why they compromised a bit.

Small side info: All this clacking noise is acutally absorbed by the transmission oil, leading to a quiet gear change and a quiet gear box Not all transissions are made equal. Just imagine, these small width gears are made to withstand huge amounts of torque, and they do indeed. Stronger engines need stronger gears and equaly small to fit into cramped engine compartments, so you can imagine how much engineering goes into these gear boxes, to make them able to handle higher torques and be quiet and last long at the same time. And from the simplicity of the whole contraption, you can get a grasp of how much cheaper it is to make a manual gear box, compared to an automatic.

According to the Learn Engineering's video, the input shaft and the output shaft are inline, and there's a counter shaft that is being used to transmit the rotation of the engine from a gear to another, while here the input shaft and the output shaft are separated and the gears are mounted on these two shafts, how does it work? Which gear boxes uses a counter shaft and which not?

It was mentioned incorrectly a couple times. The engine is not attached to the input shaft, only the clutch is attached to it. The engine is attached to the pressure plate. When engaged the engine is attached to the clutch by way of the pressure plate and the flywheel sandwiching the clutch disc.
@EngineeringExplained

Awesome video! Question: Why are driven gears usually helically cut, where as reverse gears are straight cut? Does helically cut help to increase the torque or prevent gear slipping between the input and the output shaft or something? Thanks!
@GearBoxVideo
5 жыл бұрын
Helical gears are stronger than spur gears. Helical gears run quiet. Reverse is usually a sliding gear thus making it a spur gear allows it to engage the mating gear with ease. Reverse in some applications is synchronized but still slides and also is helical in other applications as well. This trans in the video is pretty much your average FWD manual transmission yet some do have a helical reverse and fully synchronized reverse as well.
