Worked this out recently, Archery Australia has 7385 members. Australia has 0.0002 percent of the population involved (roughly one in every 3500), the US at 0.00007 (roughly one in every 14,310) . The UK has 0.0005 (roughly one in every 1850). This is just based off members of Archery Australia, USA Archery and ArcheryGB. Doesn't take into account the other organisations and as mentioned the archers who aren't part of an association.

Many thanks for the shout out for GSA Steve! We really do appreciate all of your support mate. It makes the world of difference. I'm just loving coaching at the moment and really getting a kick out of passing on archery knowledge, helping archers improve their form and shooting and fostering a love and passion for the sport. I love seeing them getting excited about shooting. It is just so rewarding!

I bought a Hoyt Ultrasport from you in Canberra in 2005, I still have it but shoot my PSE Supra nowadays which I bought from you in Adelaide. My club in Whyalla has currently 32 members but we would be lucky to have 10 turn up to shoot regularly. Trouble in rural SA is you have to go to Adelaide to compete and the travel costs are getting more expensive.

Great discussion, I find that its becoming an aged sport in the UK because we are to stuck in our ways. We need archery Forms like Clout, Vegas and Barebow to be promoted that will bring people into the sport and potentialy see more going through to Recurve or Compound. We need to build some fun into the sport again.

Hi Luke, just my thoughts here but........! To get people interested into archery, you have to give them something that they would like......!And that maybe way-off towards eventually becoming Olympic archers etc, but if you can get anyone to pickup a bow and shoot an arrow, you go from there! To do this, you have to make it first of all, FUN TO DO for those people! Secondly, make it so that it doesn't put people into a certain position (good or not so good shooter) so they ALL, feel good about themselves! This would mean that they could be shooting a fairly easy target without being judged on a point system, and still have a chance of maybe winning some! As i mentioned before, it's all about fun! The last video i send you, was just another way of making FUN whilst using archery! With my shop, i feel very much restricted in my free-time, but i do recognise where and when people need to go after their chosen challenge! I try to accomodate where i can but most people i refer to Archery Supplies, Australia! They are pros and setup for ur comments one way or the other! Worthwhile to contact them! All the same, thank you very much for your support!

I have little knowledge of the politics in the sport so take this as an uninformed opinion, Interesting discussion on paid management. Doesn’t seem to be paying dividends to growing the sport itself. Do I care about Olympic medals? No. Sports people are not curing cancer. Am I interested in sport participants developing social skills, connection to community, etc etc etc, yes. Appreciate our efforts in starting the conversation.

Hi Steve, not sure if you read the comments but here goes.... can you talk about how you go about supporting new clubs or wether you actively get involved in the start up of someone that wants to form a club

New clubs are hard to setup and estabilish. When I went to setup a club the cost of the target faces and foam targets were crazy. Now you can buy Fastgo for $400 or an Elelven for $800. Target faces were $20 each now $5. ABA and 3D are very different. I think if clubs want something then they need to have an idea of what they want.

So at the end of the day it is down to the people who are running the clubs or associations. Where there is a passion, love and energy there is growth and success. Where there is apathy there is negativity and struggle. Get rid of the people who are just there for the ride or have no enthusiasm.

I suppose it is the hard work. I was at my club Adelaide on Sunday first time since the surgery 55 archers, so many new faces. The growth in the club in the past year is amazing and the club has changed so much. It is great to see. I suppose people need to ask if what we do increases the number of archers or not. How do we make it more enjoyable.

There is a whole discussion what grows a sport - When Simon won the Gold medal in Archery in Sydney- I did not see any increase in sales or increase in membership. I think people living a dream and improving and working is amazing. When Lord of the Rings comes out - archery does see an increase in interest and sales. But overall it minor compared to the growth normally. My dads store was on the busiest road in the State my store is in a back streets. So advertising does create some sales but word of mouth is really important. If people have a good time then they tell people about it.
