It would be great if you could update this for 2014/2015. Now that all EA games are going to use frostbite 3. What would be the optimal number of cores. Am I going to see any benefit from getting a core i7 over an core i5. Does hyper threading make a difference? Are games optimised for hyper threading? Or should I go down the AMD route since the PS4 and Xbox one are running AMD, which means games are developed for those first and ported to PC

I7 aren't really necessary for gaming IMO unless you're recording gameplay a rendering videos and stuff of that nature a lot not much of a reason for one and you're better off getting an i5 If you're just doing strictly gaming i would go amd and here's why: *Although they're slower than intel but outside of synthetic benchmarks the performance is identical so realistically amd is beyond good enough *They're quite a bit cheaper, which for gaming is great it allow to buy a better gpu *Now that games are starting to support more cores amd chips have more appeal than they ever did *And like you said games will likely start being optimized for amd chip because of consoles (Please no fanboys attack me as i have used and enjoyed both and this is just MY opinion)

Tristan Hernandez Well then... 1. AMD is not slower than Intel, intel is more organized. There is a diffrence and AMD is not gonna be better than Intel if you go for the higher ups (which is necessary for FPS or physics based games) but thats because of hyper threading which is just organizing performance. 2. AMD is better because they are cheap yeah, but they also have good CPUs that are quite near in performance to the i7 if you go to their high up flag ship CPUs even without the performance increase from hyper threading. 3. Sadly, Intel wins on this one. Since they really have more logical cores than AMD, which is really just making one core work nearly as great as two but thats always great from intel to do this because it will make stuff better in the future. And yes Intel i7s are directed towards rendering and stuff... But it will have its use in gaming, mostly due to CPU reliant stuff that needs accuracy and order. Something AMD cant offer at the moment, or atleast not as good as Intel does. 4. No, it will not be more optimized towards AMD chips. Sure they will most likely optimize them more towards the AMD side due to the consoles. But that will only be on the console as their stuff is specially made for gaming 100% and as we all know consoles get a much better optimization so it might run horrible instead towards AMD PCs. We wont know until the future comes though. And im not a fanboy. Generally i like AMD more than intel due to them having good price to performance... But i have to be honest and not take a side in this conversation... Even though i think i did.

I've stuck with Intel for awhile and ever since I had my previous Intel i7 870 @ 2.93ghz I have been in love OC to 4.6ghz (keeping the core voltage to 1.26)and liquid cooled it with the best around (EK-H30 240 HFX Adv Liq Cooling Kit) I have never looked back. Loving all my new upgrades and how everything performs. Can't forget to mention my new mobo; the ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark 1 TUF series. Love the aesthetics of everything and my Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB /w a Seagate EXT HDD 2TB I got everything I need for now. Oh yeah and I just upgraded my old Corsair DDR3-1333MHz 12GB (3 sticks of 4GB each) RAM to 16GB of the Corsair Vengeance DDR3-2400MHz (2 sticks of 8GB each) just a little thing I could do in the mean time til I upgrade my 2GB DDR5 EVGA GeForce GTX 660Ti Signature 2 FTW Edition card to whatever is the best out when I want to upgrade it since I have everything else up to par, I don't feel like getting a GTX 970 and finding the correct water block for it :P Great video though for those who are considering what rig to build and what they need exactly, to play the games they want to play or do what they want to do.

I know this video is rather old but I think as long as consoles exist the number of cores will be dictated by consoles because devs will tend to care towards the console hardware since that's where most of their games will be sold and since pc's aren't all the same. So just go with the same number as consoles at least with the CPU but it also depends if the dev decides to even really do anything with pc other than a port.

mackiHL2 Agree. Both consoles use 8-core AMD's. 2 of those cores are used for stuff like video game DVR recording and voice commands / processing the Kinect / PS Eye (I think) so for gaming purposes, I think a 6-core AMD processor would be equivalent to the PS4 and Xbox One's processor. That said, it wouldn't hurt to get an AMD 8-core, the "lower end" AMD Octacores are still very cheap, and have decent power usage (not too power hungry). They're also still around twice the speed of the Jaguar cores on next-gen consoles. 1.6 and 1.75 ghz for the PS4 and Xbox is pretty damn slow.

A computer program is a single line of instructions that can't be split up once it's compiled. To use more than one core the program has to be written to do it, which takes more processing power for a program to direct it's code to multiple CPUs. Often it's most efficient to write code for one core, so if you're running just one single thread program the 8 GHz would win. However, it is more efficient to run one thing at a time on one core, so if you've got 4 equal programs running at the same time, they'd do better on a 4 core. Also, GHz is a terrible number to use to estimate the speed of a chip, as so much more is going on in the computer. RAM speeds, GPU speeds, chip architecture and cache size all affect how efficient the CPU will be. When you compare CPUs the easiest way is to look up benchmarks on websites like CPU World or Passmark.

Because what I am saying is that quad core gaming isnt really standard yet and you thinking games, as in more than just a few, will be optimized, OPTIMIZED, for more cores than 4 until your current CPU is redundant isnt correct. I just bought a new computer. When that one is outdated and I am about to buy a new one. Then, maybe, more than 4 cores are used effectively. Even that isnt a given.

Gilgamesh indeed, there's no specific vid about this. He did some comments on far cry 4 not launching on dual cores, crysis 3 eating up quad cores with no hyperthreading, same as bf4, etc. But, given AMD launching lots of underperforming quads (APUs, fx 4100,etc), games not accepting dual cores (intel dual core P300 something) and so on, i feel this vid needs a review.
@f4z0
9 жыл бұрын
I think i didn't understand your point. A lot of programs can and use up to thousands of cores. In particuar: Games like Crysis 3 have implemented certain pieces of code to perform on octa-cores. (Physics simulation on grass in example). But let's not talk about top performance but the minimum required. Games like Far Cry 4 don't even launch properly on dual core CPUs. Even the last Haswell 1150 Pentium Pwhatever that outperforms a Quadcore like FX 4100 in almost any other game (Linus himself said this). Just like this video showed Battlefield 3 not launching on a single core cpu. That's why i claim an update.
@f4z0
9 жыл бұрын
William Smith I think we are not understanding each other. The ammount of cores or threads ( when there are MORE cores /threads than required by the software) has nothing to do with game or program failure. The fail comes in the code. The game isn't which decides how many threads it uses. The OS is the one that manages the ammount of resources a certain program can use. About the Core/Thread ratio: remember Hyperthreading. Two threads each physical core. Threads are logical paths to perform a calculus. Cores are physical things. You can have a program that has hundreds of threads, if you have one CPU with one core (Pentium III) This lonely core has to calculate every thread one at a time. Pentium IV would do two at a time, a quad core can do four and a quad hyperthreaded can do eight. An octa hyperthreaded can do sixteen and so on. If the game was coded to create 4 threads, it will use four threads despite they being physical cores or two core hyperthreaded. The problem comes when a game is not designed to do a certain part with less than a minimum predefined. Similar to Server timeout when internet is slow, tecnically it can do it, but it has to wait so long than the program or OS decides to abort the process. Now about the "FX4100 good enough, without any noticeable lag" is a personal evaluation. Some people notice, other not, like 60Hz Vs 120Hz, Mouse acceleration, Graphical appealing, etc. Nothing to discuss here since we are two separated people with (probably) different perspectives about good enough and not noticeable lag.

It wasn't as much about how many fps you were getting, it was if using more cores would get you the same fps as using less cores.

I've got amd a8 5600k quad core without hyper threading, but is it really quad core?? i mean something tells me its a lie, somthing tells me its dual core with hyper threading. i typed system information and it shows 2 cores with 4 logical core, but CPU-Z show full 4 cores with 4 threads. Any advice will be appreciated.

I have a question really need an answer which is better 2cores vs. single core multithreaded And why is Intel going with multi threading why can t they increase the physical cores Consider a program that can only utilize only two core will it use only one core with a hyper threaded core or two physical core and two hyper threaded cores

Games mainly use the GPU over the CPU. Crysis was originally made to run on Core2Quad CPU's with Nvidia GPU's. If your graphics card is good enough, you should be fine.

So an i3 has 2 physical cores and thats it and then an i5 has 2 physical cores but with 2 threads per core making it basically a 4 core processor and finally an i7 has 4 physical cores and then 2 thread per core. Is this correct?
@TheSoxmania

I agree, not even my old quad core 1.66GHz system could run much... but my CAD rig can wipe the floor with it thousands of times over in terms of clock speed, I use a dual core with a base of 3GHz, but the multiplier allows for 5.25GHz on a good cooler in a cold room... might try that some day if it doesn't blow a MOSFET!

The build itself looks great, though I would have went with Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs, but that's personal preference. It all boils down to what you paid for this build. What did it cost?

Very interesting results, I had thought an i5 would be the sweet spot for games. Things _may_ change the the next couple of years with console ports coming in that could utilize more cores. But on a very tight budget, I'm sure an i3 has well would perform pretty well with something like a 750ti or R9 270, maybe in future just having to knock settings down to 900p etc like the XB1

The best decent core component setup: FX 8350, i5-i7 8 GB of the cheapest DDR3-1600 RAM with a heat spreader preferably GTX 660-680, R9 270(X), Radeon 7850-7870 Use these parts in any combination, you'll have a good gaming setup.

I am playing Battlefield 4, Counter-Strike:Global Offensive, League of Legends and Goat Simulator. I have an Intel pentium E2160, dual core, 2.1 ghz. Battlefield runs at 34 fps on the lowest graphics, my GPU is an HD 5450. CS:GO runs at 60 fps high graphics and the other stuff gets like 55 fps. It's enough for me. Although I am going for an I5 processor, so I think that 2 cores are enough.

I really don't see why people keep asking this question of cores for gaming... if your building a gaming rig, why would you buy anything less than a quad-core this day an age? I don't even understand the consideration of a dual-core box for a desktop rig. I mean seriously, just save a little more money and buy something that'll last longer. The price point is not that much higher to get to a quad-core chip. No one said you have to go super high-end quad, but an entry level quad will be better overall and last longer.

It probably wouldn't do you much good although it would "work" You'd see more benefits if you got a different motherboard and CPU too, since an A6 APU is pretty weak compared to most processors that are recommended to go with a 270x or 280x.

Pretty sure the higher clock speeds of most above average/gaming PC's CPU's can make up for the overhead of less than 8 cores and the typical overhead of Windows OS/Programs/Steam/anti-virus/etc, and still maintain the same or better performance factor as long as the game is optimized for multi-platform use/Windows only use at some basic level or higher. Specifically the game engine.

I have a q9550, with 16gb of ram on a 790i motherboard (it doesn't support 16gb, only 8gb but I made it work anyway), OC'd at 4.4, with a gtx 770. I put it up against a friends i7 who has his at 4.2, gtx 770 and 32 gigs of ram. We ran benches, I was within 5 to 8 frames MAX of him (sometimes above, sometimes lower). My rig is from 2008/2009 lol, I'm still happy (I just change out the video cards once or twice to extend life of rig). Yep.

That's because those games are more oriented to be Intel friendly sadly... and aside from that those games don't utilize all eight cores of the AMD cores. Yes, you're right, the architecture would be the most important part, but you'll need more cores for the games that need more things running.. By the way I think the FX9590 is actually just the FX8350 that's higher clocked. But you're totally right.

With the next generation game engines starting to come out now(and dx12 not that far of), i hope we'll start to see some utilisation of our quadcores, i mean it's about time. And hopefully we'll also start to see game engines take advantage of hyperthreading. So yeah i'd definitely recommend i7 with 4+ cores and hyperthreading.

i think if it worries you that much you should leave it at default speed until you can buy a better fan, but max 95 should cause no damage :) im just curious tho have you changed the voltage? i think on stock voltage it should easily do that 3.6ghz and *should not* increase temperatures that much, i could be wrong tho haha sorry, in my mind anything NON-K is low end, but no its not! i'd totally agree its Med-End (Especially if you can go above 3.6)
