Something I wanted to mention, that REALLY helped me learn the maps and is helping me memorize perks, is custom matches. My fiancé and I play custom matches a few times a week, sometimes every night, for a couple hours. We do best out of 3 (or 5) rounds on a same map, and it didn't take me long at all to memorize maps. I do think it's easier to memorize them playing as a survivor since you have to rely on the map a lot more to survive (I could be wrong, but it has felt this way to me). You also have access to all of the perks in custom matches, so you can read them all, and try them out without having to slowly unlock everything.

Regarding perks I feel like a contributing factor for beginning players is that they're very limited on what perks they can use across their characters, and as time goes by and they acquire more perks (especially as teachables that can be used on other characters) that help supplement stuff they've learned and reach a more comfortable playstyle. Perks I feel can be a nice quality of life to have that enhance the gameplay experience (or make it worse, whichever is your perspective). Getting other perks took longer some odd years ago as compared to now with the bloodweb changes that have happened over the course of time. A perk example that helps would be Windows of Opportunity, because before you're having to think about where the next pallet could be and learning more of the maps layout to get an educated guess. But with Windows, you arguably don't have to think as much about where the next pallet is and more about how you're going to get to that next pallet or which one you'll be able to use next. A beginning player is essentially forced to raw dog their first gameplay experience without decent perks and instead have to learn the mechanics of the game and go in blind against a wide variety of killers, which can be a rough starting experience. Not to say you need good perks to win games, past a certain point of experience you could honestly go a few games without any and do just fine (at least on survivor), but new players don't have that level of experience.

I don't understand how anyone would struggle as survivor, especially not when you have played killer so much. I'm a 90% killer myself (2k hours) and I have no issue at all swapping to surv, as I know all the maps/loops. As a survivor I can do exactly what all those uncatchable survivors do to me when I play killer. The amount of 5min chases I do to other killers are numerous and not rare at all, it is so easy to do... Should the killer leave me after 30secs? absolutely! But just imagine for a moment that EVERY survivor can do this... If they want to... 1 bad chase as killer usually means game over at Top MMR. Being a killer main and staying sane is the true challange of DBD. Survivor is something you play to relax or troll. Like... you just have to get into that rhytm of spotting a good loop and abuse it when the killer approaches. Loop it 3x or more depending what the killer is doing, then when he gets bloodlust, you drop the loops pallet to reset the chase... and you do it again at another loop. There is nothing hard about doing this and there are so so so many safe loops and god pallets in the game... it is impossible to run out before 5 gens are completed. If yes, then it is possible that you can do it in real games. The real test would be to do it on every map but that takes too long. if you can't do it consistently then you probably are not there yet and to be fair. not many people will get there period. regardless of how long they play.

When it was on discount a while back I got it and some of the content, and after some time playing I think I'm going to stick to watching over playing, just a better fit for me. But I do applaud the helpfulness of Otz and others who put in this sort of work for new players to prevent new players becoming discouraged from a seeming lack of rapid progress.

I’ve been playing a lot of Wesker lately and have been getting really good with it, but in the past 2 weeks I went against 2 diff comp level teams and was happily humbled. I had a blast getting beat so bad because I knew I had more to learn. Both games only ended with 1 kill which I’m honestly kinda proud of with how cracked they were.

Also could you do a video talking about what perks/items/addons are the most unhealthy for the game? It would be so gratifying to watch you vent about the unhealthy mechanics of perks like stakeout hyperfocus scavenger and a nasty toolbox, and of course made for this being a horrible designed perk thay heavily punishes killers for doing their job. I haven't played deathslinger since this perk came out. He already massively struggled to deal with W holding around large structures. Now if you try to cause someone with made for this around large buildings, you will lose. Its so unbelievably unhealthy for the game.
@ethanlloyd1085

I feel it really depends on what kind of effort you put into it outside of your matches that determines how fast you grow as a player. Coming from the fighting game community, where learning frame data and punishes, combos, parry timing and the nuances of many characters is commonplace, memorizing all the perks, add ons, killer powers, loop timing and maps is like second nature. When the game has so many potential variables, trying to learn just by feeling things out will take ages, as Otz shows in the video, but having the knowledge in advance and applying it to your games will let you develop much faster, as there's no questioning what went wrong or why, there's only "how do I apply my knowledge to keep it from happening again?". Case and point, I have only around 200 hours, but am much better at the game then two of my friends who both have over 1200. Not a brag, it's just neither of them care to look into perks as much or learn how to run loops or counter/apply killer powers, where I'm a lab guy and know what to do before even starting a game

This is such an interesting topic to dissect! Big factors include 1) Intentionality of the player to understand what is going on on the game. 2) willingness to play both survivor and killer and experiment with different play styles. 3) Familiarity with the control scheme of the video game. This third one is huge, I only recently realized. I never played pc games until recently, and i find my adukt brain struggling to loop killers even once. I have close to 2000 hrs on PS4 but decided to try to increase my neuroplasticity by dowloading dbd on pc to learn WASD movement...i can't loop now. So, i might need another 10,000 hrs on oc to get to where i am on controller 😅

As someone right at the 4k hour mark, I think if I had a few hundred hours with comp experience, I'd be in that professional level. But I believe my 3k hour self would have been the same way. For quite a while now, I've been able to carry solo queue teams against a killer that downs everyone else in 20 seconds. I've also gone against some of the most tryhard swf lobbies and come out on top. But I know if I entered a tournament I wouldn't be up to par. Public lobbies and tournament lobbies just are not the same beast. They're hardly even the same game. Saying you're an advanced player in this game (by the standards of proficient at all/most killers and excellent as a survivor) is an accomplishment in and of itself. But to be at the level of Team Misery or Team Oracle is completely different.

I'm at 2000 hours already and it's pretty on point. On Killer, I go against really good players, especially on killers that I am best at. It's no surprise to me already when I go against people with high prestige. Meanwhile on Survivor, I can't say much for my MMR. I mostly play Killer, and most of them are M1 as I value game sense more than skill. When I play Survivor, I play alone most of the time nowadays. At the start though, I had friends to play with until they felt that the game wasn't for them and so I was left alone by myself. By that time, I was playing Killer so that when we play customs again, I can stomp them, which was the only motivation for me to kept playing. Not only that, the competitive scene is more prevalent in Thailand here in Asia, and a lot of them are non-English speakers so it's hard to find people with the same passion that I can speak with. Since I usually solo queue, I keep having random matches and I can't really say with full confidence that I am that good since SWFs learn the game more quickly. However, my recent matches as a Survivor have been better so far, with people bringing decent perks with decent playstyles. Though I was more sweaty pre-1000 or around I hit that mark, I can still say that I'm better than I was despite not that "try-hard". I still have a long way to go.

Believe it or not Otz but thanks to your tutorials and tips I got to "advanced" killer level in probably 300-400 hours. I reached top MMR in my 4th week of playing with a few killers, even doing win streaks with Hag, Wraith, Huntress, Nurse and my beloved Myers and as survivor I learned to identify killer perks, loop decently, mindgame, learn totem spawns and get a decent decision making. By 400 hours I learned all the killers except Onryo and PPhead since I just bought them yesterday. But I'm a gamer, playing games since I was 2 so I learn game ridiculously quick. I know I'm nowhere near pro level, against team Eternal I'd probably end the game with 1 or 2 hook states at best, but your videos with quick tips help skip the beginner level and in-depth guides let me reach top MMR in just a few hundred games. You're a great content creator and I thank you for that!

Are you investing time keeping up with balance changes; what's good, what's bad? Huh, my earliest recordings of myself are from 270 hours, and I definitely look like I'm at the intermediate point then. There isn't a mic recording, so I don't have any of my thoughts at the time, but I definitely was not playing at the beginner level all the way to 1200 hours. I can also see that I was a rank 1 nurse and survivor on the old mmr system before 300 hours. (I do realize these were about playtime, but my win/loss as nurse and survival rate as survivor were pretty damn solid. I know those aren't accurate, but I think there's some pretty heavy bias in these hour numbers. People that have raised their skill in something to a high degree always want to believe the mountain they climbed was Everest, while the people at the bottom don't have the sense of scale to know what they are trying to work towards. It's more likely a middle ground between the two, because it doesn't take someone over 1000 hours to get decent in chase and some deeper map knowledge. Proficiency as and against all killers comes from playtime, yes, but again, not at 80 hours of game time per killer.

It’s totally up to them tbh. And I can’t blame anyone who wants to enjoy the game the way they want. But understanding the mechanics and all the details unlocks a bunch of both the game and players’ potential to pull out unique, amazing, and challenging gameplay to enjoy, esp, when you go solo. I started playing around the time The Trickster came out(2021 early march) but I watched many videos of the game even years before because I have been in love with it for a long time but I wasnt able to play is since I was younger and parents wouldn't let me play it. I quickly became addicted and started only playing DBD. Most of the times I played alone but rarely I played with some friends who played on console. After around 2-3 months I had almost complete knowledge of all perks in the game and knew all maps by name and rough layout. I hit my first P3 .Around this time I probably had somewhere between 100-300 hours put into the game. After that I started playing killer more frequently and getting invested in trying/learning each one. There were times I bought a new killer and stayed up until 2 AM playing them(Note: I went and still go to school so I usually played during late afternoon/night). The Annyversary came by and had the majority of survivors and killers by then. Most of my gametime was still put into solo. Summerbreak came by and I stayed home 24/7 so I put even more hours into the game. Before July I hit 500 hours and started pursuing rank 1 on killer. Since I played even more killer(s) I obtained add on knowledge and knew most of the stuff there was to know. I watched many KZitemrs mainly Otz, No0b3, CoconutRTS and Demi. I had great knowledge of both sides and the game's balance. I still played solo queue 99% of the times so I had a very different kind of tough process during games. Even when I played with friends they had 1/10 of my experience so calling out wouldn't make a difference so most of the times I were the distraction for the killer who would soon drop chase because they realised I was way better than the other survivors. This made me want to play more solo that lead me to only play that way. I started playing killer less, but still trying to go for that rank 1. I used semi meta perk combinations and no items or add ons. For some reason I never felt the need to bring those. Summer went by and we jump to October, where around Halloween I hit 900 hours. Barely more than half a year after I bought the game I almost had 1000 hours. I achieved rank 2 as my best rank on killer as far as I remember but steam says I have the achievment for rank 1. I quickly started to hate the game and play it less and less. I wanted to hit 1000 hours and I was so close to it but I didn't want to load up the game. I had around 950 hours when I stopped playing altogether. Around December I built up strenght to go trough another 50 hours before new years eve. I played some games here and there but 31st came by and I still had some hours left. I was so burnt out but so close I didnt want to give up. My last hours were completely AFK. After hitting 1k hours I didn't play for atleast 3 months. Even after that I only played some matches then deleted the game. I still play a few matches every 2 updates and watch videos about the game regulary but it just doesn't feel the same. Hours in this game doesn't mean much in my opinion. I could bravely say I had around Top MMR knowledge with 600-700 hours. I also saw people with a lot more than 1000 or even 2000 hours playing relatively bad. The skill in this game can't be measured in a way that is accurate. Even the devs can't do it very well with their MMR system. Thanks for reading trough my story with this game where my loved towards it turned to hate. Nowadays I don't hate it that much anymore but I don't think I'll ever play it again with joy

After 220 hours into the game I fully agree with you for the first part. I feel like an intermediate in loops, in terms of „situational awareness“ and I know most of the maps quite well. My problem is consistency. Sometimes I loop the Killer half of the game, sometime I fail the first few seconds of the chaise. Same for the killerside, where I 4K every game against beginners but I struggle a lot against intermediate players.

As an intermediate player (literally 1200 hours survivor) I found that I improved way faster dedicating some of the time I spend playing to 1v1 chases via scrim discord. A lot of the players in that server are between 1k-10k hours so you are facing people who are very good, and they will play any killer you ask them to. You learn way more from 1 hour of 1v1 chases than you do playing 2 or 3 hours of pubs. Highly recommend to anyone who is wanting to get better in a more efficient way.

I'm at 680h right now. I keep ending up against killers with roughly 2500-3500h. It's alot of fun tho and a great learning experience for myself. I still see killer perks/addons that I either didn't know how they worked or they actually catch me completely off guard. In fairness I play the game with a "learning" mindset and when watching JRM/Skermz/Auryn/Your videos, whilst mostly for enjoyment, i still take mental notes on what's going on and tend to try and intergrate stuff into my own games so I'd say I've potentially shaved off a few hours from just second hand guidance thanks to the videos and gameplays of the better players. I obviously play the game for fun but I also do enjoy being sweaty. On that note tho, as I leave this comment, I'll look back at this comment and I want myself to remember that I will DIE on this hill of NEVER t-bagging as a survivor. NEVER. No matter how unpleasant the game was, don't you f-ing dare future me, don't you dare. TL;DR: No matter what you tell yourself in the mirror, you're perfect for who you are and we love you.

Rewatching this, realizing it's been almost a year. I had maybe a few hundred hours when this came out, and now I have 2200hrs. I'd be curious to see how the MMR changes affected this video!

0:30 I can confirm playing dead by daylight made me pretty good at Identity V when I picked it up.

It depends a lot , i have like 800h but i watch your videos , i love learning about perks, add ons and stuff so i know more about the game than some people who have 2000 hours. Like you said it helps a ton because i play both sides I also have a good friend that "coached" me
