Heat rising is such a small and insignificant force that any fan spinning at an extremely low RPM will easily overpower it. Heat rising only needs to be worried about in passive builds. The hot air in a PC is only a little hotter than the intake air and therefore will have very little force. Remember a hot air balloon needs a massive flame thrower to fly.

The 'fun' thing about mini-ITX builds is that the guidelines get thrown out the window, such as having positive/neutral pressure or not doing bottom exhaust.
@walkinmn

True, but that's because it's so small that other ways of cooling it are possible and sometimes necessary, so it depends more on the case manufacturer doing a good design and some trial and run for the builder

I made an air duct from an exhaust hose and some Lego parts. The air comes with a 120 mm fan from the top is is directly connected to the large cooler. So I have a nearly dust-free case. I'm using Lego parts often in computer projects. Older server CPU coolers don't have mounting points for fans, this I could solve with some Lego Technic axles. I also found a method to fix fans screwless with Lego parts. The interesting feature is that fans can now be mounted in different angles. So it's possible to send airflow directly to the memory modules.

Zach, what do you think of the 14500 for productivity and gaming work loads. Currently it $240 and comes with a stock cooler
@hauk9659
3 ай бұрын
Stock coolers have always been included with cpu's, that isn't a point of considering for making a decision. But anyways, if you are going to be gaming, Ryzen is the way to go, hands down. Also as far as Intel goes, their newer chips, in particular 12+ gen have become very power hungry and run VERY hot, I wouldn't even consider a stock cooler to be a viable option if you care about throttling. An i5 like you're talking about could be kept under control with a smaller aio such as a 140mm or a 240mm. Forget the fancy stuff like screens on the pump or excessive rgb and you can get one of these for around the same price as a decent air cooler would cost you, while netting better cooling performance. Oh and also there's very little difference between the 13th and 14th gen from Intel, it's essentially a rebrand of the same chips, equivalent tier chips will perform exactly the same.

Have built thousands of computer so... Temperature control is a volume calculation, the air you move through your case takes heat with it, but it can only transfer so much heat... that said, moving more air will help your pc maintain cooler average temps and prevent high temp spikes. Also, having a positive pressure case is helpful for dust control, so I recommend having equal powered fans, and have 1 more intake than exhaust. Finally air flow direction, in low and front, out top and back, this moves air across GPU and CPU, as well as the mobo, which does need cooling itself. As an added note, if you still have a HDD then make sure it is getting air, some cases try to hide them away, but they will overheat and burn out, and then you lose all your data.

Has any one actually done a controlled experiment around fans? I mean, exhaust air means fresh air must enter the pc case due to the lower pressure that exhausting air will cause. Likewise the reverse. Pump more air in and increase the internal pressure so out the air comes again. Hot air rising in such a small case and with ventilation and any sort of air movement - any fan at all... is there really a big temp difference top to bottom? Not saying there definitely isn't any difference, just suspicious of how large and important that difference is. Also just referring to ambient case temp, not localized heat sources. Almost every style of heat sink needs a fan in order to work properly of course. Passive radiators designed that way are an obvious exception, though their performance can be increased by adding a fan to move more air past it.

Wouldnt you want your liquid cooling fans on your aio to be intake though? Because then its getting the coolest air possible. I have my AIO radiator on the top of my case because its the only place it will fit and i have it set as an intake. The front is also an intake but the rear fan is my exaust fan.
@toddabbott781
3 ай бұрын
But the power supply exhausts. Wouldn't you want to balance the intake and exhaust and have the fan in the back sucking air in? Then if you can have the CPU fan blowing up. Likely you can not though. Personally I think the cooling in most cases is massively overkill. I have 1 in the front and 1 in the back and stock heatsinks on the CPU and GPU and I never have problems with overheating and game all the time. I also have no AC and in the heat wave last week the temps in my house hit 90°F. I refuse to get more than my aging Antec EarthWatts 650w PSU can handle, I never run over around a 65w CPU and my GPU is usually under 200w. I hate the direction companies have gone with massively increase the power requirements to get an extra 10% out of the CPU or GPU.
