Depends on the type of armor. Kevlar vests (Levels 2 and 3A) can take a few pistol rounds before they lose integrity. Steel plates (Level 3 and 3+) can take very, very many. They make shooting targets out of the same steel. Ceramic plates (Level 4) can stop AP rifle rounds that will penetrate steel but are only rated to stop a few. The military wears level 4 plates. The research in this video is very comprehensive and is all correct. I'm very happy that I'm able to verify everything mentioned given that this is in my field. 😁

I'd Like to point out (while we are on a related subject) Ballistics geletan is NOT met to Mimic Human Flesh, it is meant to be a consistant test medium (Including Humidity/Temperature in the room)
@jimjambananaslam3596
5 жыл бұрын
It's actually deliberately mixed to be the same density and give a close approximation of human flesh, but how accurate it's going to be really depends on what you're testing, and you're right that having a consistent test medium is the main usefulness of it: www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/pobcq/how_is_ballistics_gelatin_an_accurate/
@chopinbloc
5 жыл бұрын
Here's a little copypasta I whipped up on the subject a while back: No, ballistic gel is not a simulation of wounding. NOTHING is a simulation of wounding, even actual wounds in living people. There are far too many variables for one wound to be predictive of another wound. But properly prepared and calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin produces penetration, expansion/fragmentation, and retained weight measurements that correlate strongly with wounds observed in human beings and live porcine tissue. In other words, ballistic gelatin produces empirical data that is CLOSE to what is likely to be observed in a real human, but without extraneous variables, allowing substantive comparisons to be made. Additionally, it provides the opportunity to view the entire wound track, something that is not possible with opaque media such as meat or wet pack. This is important because it can allow us to more easily compare the neck length of various loads. That is the distance a projectile travels before yawing, fragmenting, or expanding. It is useful to note that clear gel is not the same as real ballistic gelatin, but in most cases, it produces results that are equally useful, if not directly comparable to real ballistic gelatin. It is also useful to note that informal KZitem testing should not be considered to be conclusive by any means, but the testing I perform here and on other channels is done in the most consistent and scientifically relevant manner as is feasible. Generally speaking, my testing should come close to professional testing, but should not be considered to be as conclusive. The two biggest problems with my testing are lack of a controlled environment and small sample size. Finally, I do not pretend to be an expert. However, I have read the papers written by experts and I speak with Dr. Roberts from time to time. Don’t take me at my word, but do take the experts at their word. A good place to start is here: gundata.org/images/fbi-handgun-ballistics.pdf And here: www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/index.htm And here: eurekamag.com/pdf/008/008212577.pdf Finally, please reference these quotes from noted experts in the field: "The IWBA published some of Gene Wolberg’s material from his study of San Diego PD officer involved shootings that compared bullet performance in calibrated 10% ordnance gelatin with the autopsy results using the same ammunition. When I last spoke with Mr. Wolberg in May of 2000, he had collected data on nearly 150 OIS incidents which showed the majority of the 9mm 147 gr bullets fired by officers had penetrated 13 to 15 inches and expanded between 0.60 to 0.62 inches in both human tissue and 10% ordnance gelatin. Several other agencies with strong, scientifically based ammunition terminal performance testing programs have conducted similar reviews of their shooting incidents with much the same results--there is an extremely strong correlation between properly conducted and interpreted 10% ordnance gelatin laboratory studies and the physiological effects of projectiles in actual shooting incidents." - Dr. Roberts "The test of the wound profiles validity is how accurately they portray the projectile-tissue interaction observed in shots that penetrate the human body. Since most shots in the human body traverse various tissues, we would expect the wound profiles to vary somewhat, depending on the tissues traversed. However, the only radical departure has been found to occur when the projectile strikes bone: this predictably deforms the bullet more than soft tissue, reducing its overall penetration depth, and sometimes altering the angle of the projectile's course. Shots traversing only soft tissues in humans have shown damage patterns of remarkably close approximation to the wound profiles. The bullet penetration depth comparison, as well as the similarity in bullet deformation and yaw patterns, between human soft tissue and 10% ordnance gelatin have proven to be consistent and reliable. Every time there appeared to be an inconsistency a good reason was found and when the exact circumstances were matched, the results matched. The cases reported here comprise but a small fraction of the documented comparisons which have established 10% ordnance gelatin as a valid tissue simulant." - Dr. Fackler

Ceramic armor can take a shocking number of hits before failing, the reason it's recommended to replace it if damaged is because your life is worth more than a $600 plate. It'd still work perfectly fine, but why take the chance? As for steel armor, it's made from the same stuff steel rifle targets are made from, so it is specifically designed to spend a lifetime being shot and you would have no reason to replace it if it was shot. I have a level 3 vest with steel plates, the downside is how hard it is on your back after wearing it for awhile.

You are correct for the most part, lvl 3+ can stop 7.62x51mm .308 armor piercing rounds. Lvl 4 is most often times composite armor and can stop a .30-06 while 3+ cannot stop .30-06. Other then that all the info up to @2:30 is correct. Now also addressing soft vs hard, lvl3 is the entry point of stopping rifle rounds, like 5.7, 5.56 m193, and the like... however lvl3 allows 5.56m855 to pass right threw, were as 3+ will stop even .308 armor piecing round. Soft armor stops at 3A and there is no reputable multi hit lvl3 made of soft armor. Soft armor stops at lvl3A and hard steel armor starts at lvl 3. Lvl 3 only covers vital areas of the body, heart, lungs, liver, while a trauma pad is often used behind the steel plate to help keep trauma in check. The armor I wear is lvl 3+ at 11x14 and is 9lbs a plate. So far that covers to @4:00 now up to @5:00 ceramic plates are actually most often 3+ or 4 and can stop multi hits. Now as I said earlier lvl 3+ stops AP .308 rounds but a .30-06 will go through it... the difference is only 100fps between these two rounds, 100fps makes a lot of difference, of course these ratings are measures with full powder burn, meaning a 22” barrel for .30-06 and a 20” barrel for .308... I liked the video... sorry for the corrections.

Back in my police days, we found an old level IIA (2A is less than lvl 2) that was well worn and had been sitting on some shelf for over 20 years. Strapped to a wooden post (which we later found can deminish its performance as the post won't flex like ribs do), that vest stopped hot 9x19mm JHPs (+p+, bit warmer than NATO std), .40 caliber JHPs, ball ammo from 9mm and .40, and even lead 1oz 12 ga shotgun slugs and 00 buckshot. Obviously I wouldn't want to test that in the real world and as light as 2A armor is I'd imagine back face deformation would cause serious blunt force trauma to the wearer. On the other hand, I've seen where one of our guys, shot in the chest at a slight angle with a .25acp found the round slid around the surface of the vest and where it found the point where the front and back panels overlapped, actually cut through the edge of the Lvl IIIA vest and left a nasty cut along his ribs. So we have one very old, used, expired several times over vest stopping rounds well above its rating bit the least powerful centerfire pistol round finding a way past the stoutest soft armor made. Lesson: nothing is for sure, but when going into harm's way, it's best to hedge your bets.

Well researched and concisely stated. Well done. You couldn't possibly have covered all of the "well, kinda" exceptions to the general rules you stated, though you did a good job explaining that there are a lot of exceptions. Here are a few more: While it's true that some fibers are broken at the point of impact, and it is also true that an additional hit near the first has a higher probability to passing through, it's still almost certainly going to be stopped. Remember that one of the metrics to pass NIJ certification is back face deformation. Panels have to be made tough enough that they do not deform too much when struck. So to get them to the point that they catastrophically fail and allow a projectile to perforate takes an awful lot. In regard to ceramic faced composite plates, it again depends on a lot of factors, not the least of which is the design, but for plates with monolithic strike faces, they're able to stop hits very close to the original impact. I stacked four M855 rounds within 1/2" of each other on a Highcom 4SAS7 a few years ago. All were stopped. In regard to UHMWPE plates, they are composed of multiple layers, which delaminate with each hit, compromising the ability to stop. Once again, this depends on a lot of factors, but if you hit the plate with something that's approaching its V50, additional hits are more likely to get through. You implied that PE plates are available in the same protection levels as ceramic faced composite, but, to the best of my knowledge, there is no lvl IV PE plate. You frequently showed photos of military armor. US DoD armor is not rated by the NIJ. The soft panels are roughly equivalent to IIIA, though they are more flexible than NIJ rated IIIA panels and provide less protection against back face deformation. SAPI and eSAPI would pass NIJ level III standards. I believe xSAPI is similar to NIJ level IV but I wouldn't swear to it. Other countries do not use NIJ standards. They have their own certifying bodies. On the subject of ceramic plates cracking, that's another one of those things that's technically correct but easy to misunderstand. First, these plates aren't made of the same thing as your coffee cup. They are made of boron carbide, silicon carbide, or aluminum oxide. These are extremely tough and unlikely to crack if dropped. If they do crack, they'll still stop rounds. In fact, some plate designs are actually a checkerboard of tightly fit tiles under the carrier. I've hit a ceramic plate with a sledgehammer and it still stopped multiple rounds.
@KoishiVibin
4 жыл бұрын
PE's issue is it's massive steel core weakness. Sure there's a company solving this as we speak, but I really don't think anything better then tool steel is coming soon. Until then, there's ceramic faced PE. Also, challenge: Build a life vest that floats and will stop bullets out of UHMWPE. :P

generally sound reasoning. soft armor expires in 5 years and can reasonably be relied on for one shot per a given small region but shots close together will get through, ceramic plates shatter on impact, sometimes the entire front shattering making them useless against a second shot, steel plates can take numerous rounds without much problem. would have liked to see you mention why any plate should be replaced after its inaugural use though, which mostly has to do with spalling protection. when a bullet stops against a hard plate, it shatters, throwing small bits of shrapnel out in all directions. most companies put some kind of coating on the outside (usually truck bed liner) built up into a thick rubber encasing. the bullet enters this before shattering and when it does, the rubber catches the fragments, preventing them from imbedding in your neck. once this has been shot enough, as with all coatings, it wears down or falls off, putting you at risk of getting hit by spalling

I had the opportunity to shoot at a level II Second-Chance type vest some years back. We hung it on a target frame. It resisted .38spl and .22 LR. However, someone next to me fired a few 9mm FMJ in a fairly tight cluster. One of those rounds went right through. Another friend then opened up with his .357 GP100 and within half a cylinder the vest was in shreds.

Great video, but I would've recommended mentioning metal body armor (such as AR500 steel armor). It's got the weight disadvantage, but it's much more resilient to multiple hits than ceramic and soft armor (well, at least for rounds it's rated for).
@WardenWolf
4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the vest material and what exactly you hit them with. A flexible vest like Kevlar can stop multiple rounds provided those rounds do not impact too closely to each other, but is effectively ruined after one and should be replaced (though, in a pinch, can still be used for a while). A rigid plate like ceramic or polyethylene can also likewise stop multiple rounds so long as they are not stacked, but is effectively ruined by one (ceramic requires immediate replacement because it will start falling apart). But where it gets interesting is steel plates. With steel plates, so long as the impact is below the threshold required to actually damage it, it is not ruined. Generally, if there is no dent it's fine. The penalty, of course, is increased weight.

BTW, you can't cheat physics. You know how I know that the wife taking a bullet to the stomach is fake, or at the very least the guy shot a light load or a .22, because even if you wear kevlar, the whole energy of that round still has to stop on that point where the vest caught it. That means a massive bruise, the heaviest gut punch you've ever taken, broken ribs, ruptured skin, you name it. taking a hit to a steel plate is preferable because then the energy is dissipated across the entire plane of that plate, rather than one point.

I was issued a vest with neck guards, upper arm guards, side, front and back flaps. It was heavy being around 18lbs or so. The flaps, neck, and armguards wouldn't stop a bullet but were more for blast injuries. I haven't been shot so I can't attest to that part of it but a buddy of mine did get a glancing shot on his chest from a ricochet bullet. She must really know about what he makes and trust him to let him shoot her at that close of a range. OR........he has a really good life insurance policy on her.

I would believe that for level III plates. they're typically made from a material called AR500 steel, that does a good job of maintaining its integrity after a lot of abuse. many people use them as targets when shooting, since they can take litterally hundreds or even thousands of rounds before breaking (these are typically thicker than body armor plates) and they give a nice ring when the shooter hits his mark
@duenge
5 жыл бұрын
While they stop bullets, a vest does not make you injury proof. Many a cop has seen an Intensive Care Room after his vest stopped a bullet. There still could be cardiac or pulmonary contusions, I've seen fractured ribs, collapsed lungs, and Hepatic Hematomas (Liver)...An officer friend showed me his welts that he received after being shot with three .22 long rifle rounds from a cut-down rifle....They looked nasty, and this was probably 5 years post injury...

This was informative and covered the difficulty of giving a straight answer to the question well. However. I think focusing down on common specifics would have been helpful as a baseline. Such as 9mm vs the most common level of soft armor worn by police in the US. Or US Army standard issue armor vs 7.62x39
@chopinbloc
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, even that, more narrow, scope would be difficult. Police officers wear a variety of different types of armor depending on climate, what their department issues, what they are allowed to buy and what they can afford, and the role they are in. For example, a rural sheriff deputy in Yuma County, AZ might wear a level II under his uniform shirt but keep a level IV in a PC in his trunk for active shooters. Maybe a King County Deputy in WA might wear a level IIIA in an outer carrier over his uniform. Even the US Army isn't 100% homogenized. There are still a mix of SAPI, eSAPI, and xSAPI plates floating around.

It goes pretty deep, like some seem to think both the government and organized religion as a whole are unwittingly doing Satan's bidding. It would be hard to do a video on though, because there isn't really a universal belief on any of this stuff, they all have varying degrees of delusion, which in itself is evidence that none of it is true, just in case simple critical thinking and logic isn't evidence enough of that.

In the US military, you're issued your body armor, but you can supplement it with your own, as long as you can afford it and get permission (non-standard can cause complications when removing in case you get hit and doc isn't familiar with the it). As for financial responsibility for damage, if it's through your negligence (dropping it and causing it to be compromised, etc) you can be charged with destruction of government property. I've only heard of one case where a soldier was charged for the damage due to enemy fire, but it created enough of a PR nightmare that he didn't have to pay for the damage.
