When I was about 12, in the 1970s, my sleazy older brother (in his 20s) wanted to buy some of the common/low priced coins from my collection. This mystified me, he never had any interest and made fun of me for collecting coins. I sold him a bunch of common Indian head cents, V Nickels, Buffalo Nickels and a few foreign coins at a cheap price. All were identified in 2X2s. It turned out he added all sorts of words like “rare” and exorbitant prices. He would go into bars and approach people as if these were super-rare coins that might not have been legally obtained (hot). He apparently made some money doing this. He would also gamble against cash at pool tables with the “rare” coins. I truly wish someone had given him a good ass kicking.

I “deal” part time and buy fairly often and receive calls almost daily with people Inquiring about the value of their collection. Wheats, circulated silver, etc are often worth Only a few cents to a few dollars and hurt their feelings when reality hits. It’s unfortunate but I try to explain why and usually it’s all good at the end. Just had a guy call and send photos of 64 Kennedy and had to tell him it’s basically worth silver instead of hundreds but if he has a bunch, they will add up.

The Meltdown for a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is currently at $9.26 each. The 2022 Red Book, not the Blue Book, has a value for MS60 at $10 each. The PCGS Price Guide has a 1964 Kennedy graded by PCGS for MS62 as $20 each, (right, you pay $30 to grade it to lose $10). The Red Book in this case is too low, a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar should be sold at around $15, due to Numismatic Value, now $54,000, (crazy).
