The Golden Arches
McDonald's, no doubt, is one of the most recognizable brands on the planet. We can spot those golden arches from miles away; our mouths salivate at the thought of a hot Big Mac and a box of crisp fries.
Origin
Post-great-depression-America saw a massive boom in technology and business. More and more Americans began driving, and, as a result, drive-up restaurants rose in popularity.
McDonald's Real Estate
McDonald's owns the land and the building. A private entrepreneur, whose life-long dream was to own and operate a Mcdonald's, agrees to lease the property and assume the day-to-day responsibilities.
Revenue
McDonald's has been raking in more than 19 billion dollars per year since 2005. The company peaked in 2013 with 28 billion dollars in total revenue. They have, however, been on a slight decline in recent years, bottoming out at 19 billion dollars in revenue for 2020.
Ownership Experience
You may be wondering what it’s like owning a McDonald's. First, eager entrepreneurs must submit an application to be considered. Upon approval, they must go through a rigorous and unpaid nine to twelve-month training program to learn everything there is to know about operating a Mcdonald's.
Fast Food Rivals
McDonald's isn't the only company with its hands in the real estate pool. Fast-food rivals like Burger King operate using a similar business model. If you prefer to operate a Burger King, it will still cost upwards of 1.8 to 3.2 million dollars to open a Burger King.
Future of McDonald’s
McDonald's saw dips in their overall revenue starting in 2015. Market economists attribute this to the rise of what they call fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle and Five Guys.
Chipotle
The funniest part about the McDonald's Chipotle relationship is that McDonald's owned 90% of Chiptole between 1998 and 2006. The burger chain pulled out of the burrito game to "...put 100 percent of their efforts into the McDonald's brand."
Investor Wishes
Because McDonald's real estate market is so strong, investors have been hounding the company to lease 100% of their restaurants. Let’s think about these numbers for a moment. In 2014, McDonald's grossed 27.4 billion dollars in revenue.
