Some clarifications are needed: 1. Average household incomes had actually declined in the period 1994 to 2018 by 20%. A very unorthodox way of decreasing inequality: making everyone worse off. 2 . The past 8 years before covid we received a malaise of foreign investment: the kind that produces negative capital flows. Importing gas to produce electricity. To compensare public debt increased dramatically and the peso devaluated. 3. Wages were stagnant because neoliberals decided to keep minumun wage increases below the inflation rate ....pure genius.

The most important fundamental here or for any developing country aspiring to become developed and reasonably wealthy is having good education for the general public. Education not only lift people out of poverty, improve health, or provide for economic advancement. It is the foundation for everything else to come, including attracting quality FDI, producing successful businesses, and inducing indigenous innovations. Sounds simple in principle, but to achieve it is another matter.
@ceroluselazurin6842

@@icemann4699 No. Education is only a component of development. You mainly need infrastructure and capital flow and education as a complement. In my country it is very common to see engineers and accountants working as uber drivers.
@icemann4699
3 жыл бұрын
@@ceroluselazurin6842 I'm aware of other important components. Infrastructure is a huge cost and developing countries lack the sufficient funds and the economic output to finance it adequately. I did say education is the SINGLE most important factor. You are referring about individual cases regarding education. That's not the point. It is about good education for the whole general populace. Education is also a more stimulating and sustaining component for growth. There are many other positive effects of education. Attracting quality FDI is one big economic driver as a result. FDI create many direct jobs and secondary jobs and also bring forth domestic business supply chains and technology transfers. It helps create a growing middle class and more new businesses, the engines of growth. More funds from taxes to support more infrastructures, healthcare, education, R&D, etc. Higher quality universities also resulted with time. Of course, there other important factors such as political stability, cost of labor, existing infrastructures, geographic location, ease of doing business, work culture, tax incentive, etc. S. Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore are a few examples where many others fell short. They started out as poor developing countries with little infrastructures and natural resources. Their economic successes are much owed to their high achievements in education. All attracted large FDI and gradually move up the supply chain and break from the middle income trap. There are underemployed educated people in those countries too. Observing all those countries that have been stuck at (or below) middle income for many decades, what do they ALL have in common? A comparatively lower level of education for the general populace. The performance on the PISA is a good metric. I would add that a country's culture is very important here as it encompasses many aspects including education and work ethics. However, that is too broad and seems more impractical.
@ceroluselazurin6842

@@icemann4699 I have studied south korea's case closely . The largest factor that I've noticed in Mexico is that the general public is very risk-averse. This translates to investors and governments. It seems that past crises made Mexicans weary of long-term investment and therefore haven't made any truly ambitious plans in the last 25 years. It's clear to me, that a large-scale investment in the public school system would be the best way to go but this would start producing economic results 30 years from now. However, with such a discrepancy between the quality of education between private and public school, the bottom 40% of the population will never have a chance to rise up otherwise.

Most long-term investments usually involve high percentages of debt. And we've seen what debt from international banks usually involves: conceding power to foreign interests. Many economies we see as highly advanced and prosperous hide a terrible truth: well over the totality of its annual GDP is owed to different banks and institutions (see Japan with over 250%). But I coincide with your view on education, only that it should be financed with our tax revenue rather than with loans, or at least with a significantly higher percentage of taxes vs loans; just as the major national infrastructure projects being undertaken now have been financed. Because in the end, in terms of nations, loans are nothing but debt due to be paid by your ancestors. That's precisely what mexicans don't want, nor need.

As a Mexican profesional whom emigrated, I can tell you that some of these issues have a lot to do with racism & elitism, most so called ‘entrepreneurs’ try to cheap down labour and they never grant people the opportunity to get good paying jobs, either you are brown, you don’t have family pedigree/abolengo( in soanish) or your education is not considered good ( you studied in a public school) that is why I left, whereas in Canada and USA( more in the US, sorry Canada) I got the opportunities to grow and develop more skills In Mexico I was never given the chance to begin with. That is why most professionals leave and thus Mexico becomes a labour exporter, it is only for the elites to become ‘entrepreneur’ or to have a good paying job.
@karlaalexa211

That's just from the social aspect. The real reason is the implementation of right wing economic models that allow cheap labor to exist. Yes racism is something we should be solving faster but a weak economic system allows it to exist.

@@christian.mar.garcia China was stupidly more protectionist than Mexico in Mao’s time so when it started to open up the boom was immense, China from one day to another started giving the market the biggest workforce in the world with little to no regulation about exploitation and stupidly cheap prices combined with the biggest consumer market in the world, this combined with the forced industrialization that caused China to lost millions of lives in famines due to the rural population being abandoned and exploited by the government in order to build an industrious urban population in the cities during the great leap were the causes of China astronomic rise to power, on the other hand, while with protectionist policies, Mexico has always been opened to the world so it was not like the opening of a new market but just the gradual and slow expansion of an already existing one, and thanks to this protectionist policies being moderate it allowed for a healthy Mexican Native private sector to thrive, this Native small business sector along with many workers protection laws prohibited foreign companies from giving such a bad treat to the Mexican workers as they had local options and also were protected by the nation, this made many companies prefer countries with less regulations like China, India or Bangladesh more fitting for foreign companies to invest in due to cheaper wages and more working hours for their people, and another fact that differentiated the case of Mexico from Chinas is that Mexico which was very influenced by humanism and progressivism opted for a more moderate and slower industrialization plan with a state and private hybrid model instead of the state sponsored Chinese one that wouldn’t prioritize development over human life, and it also didn’t abandon the rural side as Mexico had a lot of agrarian tendencies, being the reform of agrarian lands taking lands from big landowners and foreign companies and dividing them between the people who work it a big part of Mexican policies from the government of Cardenas all the way until Diaz Ordaz, and not spending in education and infraestructura is just not true, since the times of Cardenas the government started a bunch of tendencies that characterized themselves for reducing the military and bureaucratic spending and increasing the spending on education and development, the only thing that changed there is the fact that the new administration is just not nearly as both corrupt and inefficient as the last one, basically the reason of why the economic growth of Mexico has been slower than the average are the protection of its people and industry by laws and syndicates, corruption, incompetent management and resource mishandling, for example Pemex which was the second worst case of a nationalized oil industry in the world only behind Venezuela’s PDVSA As an extra, in my opinion the current president is handling the country pretty poorly in many aspects, but at least he is not outright corrupt like most the recent past administrations were

Mexico's very diverse, the gross economic growth figures have been low for many years and will continue to be low for a long time, why? because while there are states growing steadily at 5, 6 and even 7 or higher rates, like Nuevo León, Queretaro, Guanajuato and others, there are also a number of states with zero or negative economic growth, like Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco and other impoverished states and when you averaged it all, the overall result is poor economic growth in general. Just like cotton or sugar in other parts of the world. Mexico needs to get better as a financial hub and technology to make it as a competent nation. Rather be a broker or coder than a weed picker for other people to smoke. 🤷🏾 In all seriousness, there is more money on fintech industries with Mexico 600 new companies and the bitconization of the country than having the highly intervene oil and mining industries. If tourism was a natural resource the state would have had already confiscated it and fuck it all up. And that is the biggest problem. The only reason cartels are in Cancun is because of the wealth accumulated, is the same reason 7eleven, hard rock cafe or Krispy Kreme is there, so yeah everyone is making money, including small business, if they weren't making money they would have move out already. Fortunately tourism is an industry that demands innovation. You can't keep offering the same thing otherwise people get bored and you need to create new demands and new markets. Which is why Cancun economy has grown so much in 20 years. The problem is why the rest of the industries are so unproductive? Working 10 hours in Cancun you make way more money than 10 hrs in Campeche or Oaxaca. It has to do with innovation. Most small business don't innovate and that's the problem.

@@gabrielprodanovic remember that cartels are really mafias, and they exist everywhere, US, Europe, Japan, etc. The difference in Mexico is that they stand out because of the lack of opportunities, the lack of opportunities come from the lack of investment which come from the lack of innovation. People everywhere want to make money, and they invest to make money. But the real problem in mexico is that laws are so slow and hard for business (investment on a third party business) to work. Lawsuits are very slow, and getting that money back is even harder. Plus low business knowledge, like insurance, or asset management, all those combine to make business harder to propagate. You shouldnt sweat blood to be able to raise capital when you want to start a new innovative business like mobile applications, or .com idea. Just in monterrey there are about 300 family offices that invest in businesses and a stock and bond market which is pretty depressed but there still is available. That means that there are VCs and incubators to make the next generation of corporations. Hi I'm Mexican. Interesting video. I could contribute more to your comments. The country didn't entry at all into globalisation. Mexicans feel proud of hard work but sadly they lack of any idea of hard productivity like the Germans, Japanese, Koreans or Americans. Education never stimulated the sense of innovation, investment or enterprise. The country seems to be stuck in an aeternal maquiladora economy, from which China could flee not long ago. As long as the country doesn't enter as a global competitor in technologies and industries, same story will be seen.

Level of productivity is probably important if the end goal is to build wealth. But wealth alone does not lead to a better quality of life. Many times the factors that do contribute to quality of life are sacrificed to build wealth. So perhaps the Mexican economy is lagging in productuvity because its people are more focused on a simpler life focused on family, food, music and social connection. I think if the average Mexiacan is content, they are better off skipping the crazy rat race of work more, consume more, throw out more.

@CogitoErgoSumFortis

You should really dig into how international banks have hit Mexico. During the 1994 crisis and onwards to 95, Mexican banks went under and big banks came in and bought them, somethimg possible thanks to the opening of the nation. Quality of life has always been high, but a lot of foreign interests have made it harder to properly invest in those areas where it's most important in order to improve productivity, say education and non-predatory financial services. There is also the thing about the south. Both the government as well as foreign interests have crossed out major investments in the south of the country, going into a negative feedback loop (the gvmt doesn't invest in infrastructure because of lack of economic pressure, companies won't invest due to lack of infrastructure therefor not creating economic pressure). The current administration has 2 major infrastructure projects that hope to revitalise the southern economy as well as improving the technical education of the population. Mexico has alwas been hard to measure using the standard economic indicators because, as everything in life, they are flawed. 40% of the population fall below the poverty line but the cost of living is very low and that metric doesn't consider that the majority of mexicans live in relatively large families. Also it doesn't consider that the median income doesn't take into account earnings coming from the irregular economy, so there is no way of measuring true income. We have poverty? Yes, a lot of it, but not nearly as much as those metrics make it seem. I've lived in England, I know just about how much poverty exists there and how it may be masked, just how little savings and liquidity people have and the major belts of poverty around big cities; just as every other human society. But looking at other metrics such as 'happiness' show you that people are relatively well off. Perhaps that 40% won't be able to travel to China but they for sure are happy with their life. We got a lot to do, and we are doing a lot. But all I'm saying is that shortly-researched economic info doesn't do justice to a wildly complicated society such as Mexico.

@JORGINHODONASCIMENTO

I must say that i find your information very interesting, it is, however, incomplete. For example, a minimum wage in the 70's was enough for a father in a family of four to support his family, although you couldn't considered them rich or anything like that, it was enough to cover the basic needs. for almost 40 years, the acquisitive power, related to the income, suffer a huge blow, year after year; the increases on minimum wage were almost always under the inflation rate. It was only after the actual president AMLO, as they call him, increased in only three years from 88.12 to 141.70 pesos per day, and he still has three more years to get it higher. The Mexican economy and every other countries economy shouldn't not be graded on GDP growth but in how that growth affects/benefits it's citizens. It is not the same to say that the biggest corporations have seen record numbers of growth than to say that record numbers of it's population have seen growth. The neoliberalism created inequality due to the way politicians and bankers corrupted the system. carlos salinas pretty much gave away Mexico's state run businesses to friends and family in exchange for future profits and shares. ernesto zedillo saved big corporations and banks (many of them didn't need any government support yet they got got it) and charged such debt to the general population; it was called fobaproa, which meant to convert the debt of a few into the debt of the nation. vicente fox allowed his wife's family and his own to become extremely rich by allowing them (as any other president and/or governor before him) to illegally enrich themselves charging the bill to the nation's tab. felipe calderon (and vicente fox as well) received some of the biggest incomes from the sale of oil, yet that money went to his friends pockets or banks located in fiscal paradises; also started a war against criminal organizations with the twist to give favor to other criminal organizations; it was like giving money, support and protection to north korea to fight south korea. enrique peña created laws to keep giving away the nation's resources to benefit transnational companies that do nothing but steal and take what it's not theirs. Most huge companies, including walmart, coca cola, banks and mining didn't pay taxes or, in most cases, appeal to get them paid back by the feds, this was a very common and simple rule. "You are my friend or my partner, you don't have to pay anything; I'll fix it for you" Talking about the future, well it is up to the actual president and his predecessors but, being realistic, it's up to the people to create a new Republic. I don't pretend to tell you that you don't know anything about the subject, your only problem is the lack of real information because it all depends on your source. If your source has wrong data, you have wrong data.
