I disagree. Leadbetter had her swing looking the best it ever had. Her parents controlling every move she made and telling her instructors what to do was the main problem. Same thing happened to Lydia Ko.

@redstone5149: changing the best swing in golf that allowed a 15 year old superstar girl to hit 320 drives and compete with college age men in national amateur tournaments to the point where she could barely drive the ball 270 yards as an adult middle of the pack woman was an improvement?

Your premise that Leadbetter somehow is responsible for Wie not living up to the undeserved hype and promotion is her swing coach. A more accurate premise is how pathetic it is the Wie is still trying to leverage her mediocre career and infer it is someone else's fault than her own. Perhaps her US Open win and unremarkable 4 other wins were the exception and she wasn't nearly as good as the LPGA and other parasites who sought to make money off of her wanted to portray.

Yes she won 1, count it 1 major tournament and had only 5 career wins. So not sure exactly what revenge she attained as her career did in fact fall way way short of the hype and promotion. More notable than her US Open win is her untiring ability to milk her mediocre career. There can only be one conclusion and that is she was poorly advised, under performed and given that way way over hyped and promoted.

Just so I understand the assertion, since Michelle Wie based on her performance is not regarded as a top female golfer, she therefor is a victim of something other than her own inability to rise to the hype and self promotion. The basic premise of this video is belied by the statements Michelle Wie made when she was doing well. She actually was silly enough once to talk in terms of playing as a regular on the PGA and beating Tiger Woods. Instead of increasing the level of self promotion and branding as advocated by Wie, female golfers should emulate Annika Sorenstam who won 72 times (not 5) including 10 majors (not 1). And when Annika was invited to play in a PGA event and missed the cut, she was humble and honest enough to point out "I don't belong here". While one might appreciate someone having dreams and striving for a goal, there stature relative to that process should be rooted in reality and reflect there actual accomplishments.

At 15, Wie made made the quarter finales in the National publinx amateur playing against mostly college male golfers. She lost to the eventual champion. Reaching the quarter finales in a adult male National Championship is no small feat for a 15 year old male or female. Leadbetter changed the best swing in golf, which was compared to Sam Snead's, and changed it into Nick Faldo's. Leadbetter was a technical based swing coach and Wie was a feel player. It was a terrible fit. She would have been better off with Butch Harmon.
@brianroyster7510

@@leeboy7139 she would have been better off competing in the women's game. I agree Ledbetter was a bad fit. He was a bad fit for every pro except Faldo, who played like a robot. But the biggest issue with MW was her dad and Nike. He clearly wished that he had a son and Nike wanted another Tiger. Her head was so screwed up by her late teens that she never had a chance to develop her talent. Plus, she had the bugaboo of many women golfers, horrible putting. I have never been able to understand why the one area of the game that should be equal between men and women is not. Adjust the tees to make up for the power difference and men still have a huge advantage, generally, bc women can't putt. It's baffling to me.

No, not even close. Clark won't be a "perceived" abject failure like Wie, although in Reality Wie isn't. (Brilliant amateur, Stanford grad, Major winner, mother and ultimately a successful businesswoman worth tens of millions), no, Clark's parents aren't pushing her career into gimmicky shortcuts to fame and riches. She's at the mountaintop and has all the money she needs. Nobody's filling her head with outlandish ideas of playing with men in the NBA. Ridiculous couch fans who know nothing about women's basketball but got sucked in with online shorts and compilation videos of her making oodles of logo threes in college has created her present circumstance as being the face of the WNBA. She will be above average, make plenty of future all-star and Olympic rosters and maybe even win a championship or two. We just have to wait a couple of years for her stans to dial it down a bit on the rhetoric and hype and realize she won't be a Wilson or Stewart or maybe not even a Plum or Ionescu. But she'll be fine and I think she'll be mentally tough enough to handle it. She's 24 not 14.

We all know about her achievements, and lack thereof, but what she did for the LPGA outdistances many who won more. A lot of men watched LPGA events solely to watch Michelle play, and her tee times were always engineered to assure she would be on the course during televised coverage.
