It’s not a loophole when the MLBPA agreed to this rule
@paull.4143
5 жыл бұрын
It's a loophole when you didn;t know it existed until someone got bit in the ass. I think most of the MLBPA members didn't know the clause was there, and if they did couldn't imagine how this clause could impact a player later, &/or it wasn't important enough to protect a future elite prospect when compared to aspects of the CBT that impacted current dues-paying, voting members. Now that the devilish owners found it, deep in the bowels of the billion page CBT, & are using it to unfairly (?) keep that, once in a decade, elite talent on his team one more year before the Yankees will outbid them, then It Is a Loophole!

I would love to see sports journalists tackling issues of exploitation like this more often. Too many times I see a chiron or a headline running the massive numbers of contracts signed by the latest free-agent star, but letting that be the story of sports is like letting Bill Gates be the story of America. Sure, it's cool that he's super rich, but that's awfully bland and irresponsibly centered for focus when so many people struggle and suffer within the same system. Professional sports organizations, including and most damningly the NCAA (yes, they are a professional organization profiting off the labors of "amateur" athletes), exploit tens of thousands of people in the name of profit and celebrity, and they ought to be called out as often as they're praised.

I actually like the cba agreement as it is. It allows for some balance in a league that is so unbalanced skill wise already. If players were granted free agency after say 3 years of service time I could only imagine that teams like the dodgers, red sox and yankees would pounce on these young players, given that they would be younger and have more years in their prime ahead of them. When you look at teams like the marlins then compare them to teams like the teams I previously mentioned as well as the astros or maybe even the brewers it's arguable that the marlins could be an affiliate of those teams. I could only imagine how much harder it would be for small market teams like the marlins, rays, athletics etc. to compete and keep good young players on the team if players were granted free agency after fewer years.

You might want to update this since Alonso, Tatis, Jimenez are heading to the MLB. And 6:10 - that argument is more valid today than ever... as this past week's extensions prove. Also, you discount the fact that most of these players who are the cusp have already been paid signing bonuses in the first place. At 16, Vlad Jr was given almost $4M to sign with the team. Jimenez was signed for nearly $3M, Alonso and Tatis Jr a little less than $1M signing bonus. The min salary of the MLB if $550K, which starts the moment you're called up. So I will try to not feel too bad for the players if the team wants to try and hold on to those heavy investments for an extra year. And they have hundreds of players they are paying at lower levels... maybe your argument should be that the money a team might save by this quote fingers terrible policy should be spent to give the minor leaguers a raise.... oh, but wait.... that's already happening, too.

@TrewlPatrol
5 жыл бұрын
@@carrssportscorner99 am I sure? No! But common sense would suggest that the players know exactly what the team is doing by holding them back for that extra year of control. And athletes have egos. Big ones. Vlady Jr killed AA and AAA pitching so there's no reason for him not to be in the bigs. Shit, they had a 19 year old pitcher on the roster to start the year, and he's ready already? Spite will come back to bite them in the ass when it's time to negotiate a contract with him...

Does anyone ever feel sorry for the Team's Ownership? I mean they keep this huge organization going in hopes for that one Mega-Prospect to make it all worth it. But they are vilified for wanting to keep the player one more year before the Yankees drive up in that Brinks Truck and sign him away. I mean in that 1 year the team and their city can still hope for winning the elusive Ring. If the team that should be a contender but isn't, the player is now worth a prospect or 2 when traded before the non-waiver deadline. However, if the team knows in year 5 that they are going to be rebuilding, or selling, then the elite player will have more trade value since there is another year of control for the trade partner. Doesn't the Elite Player owe the team that one extra year before running to that big payday? So why is this issue even an issue? Besides, this scenario only affects a half dozen or so Minor leaguers each year. They'll make the big money, either way, barring injury, meanwhile, 99% of the union wish they had this problem. They want to stay with the club the extra year. If for no other reason but to postpone the free agency horror of having to sign a "Minor League Contract w/ an invitation to Training Camp"! All in all this loophole rule helps the team, their city, and the other union members get what they want. Why then do the Bryants of the game not understand that they should just shut up and take one for the team, et al? Last point I want to make is to the player who said something to the effect of; it wasn't fair to put in all the hard work during the offseason knowing that no matter how good you are in camp, at the end you'll go down to the minors just so the team can keep you for an extra year, it's just not fair. To this player I say, shut up little infant! Everyone knows your good, but in the cosmic view, you are just being a Pansyassed Whiney Baby. Look at the player's around you, do you think they have sympathy for you or would they, like me, want to just knock you out for being such a self-important piece of toad excrement! Most of what I presented was supposed to have an air of sarcasm, but my one last point was truly meant from my heart!

Shocking. Katie Nolan again showing her ignorance when it comes to sports. If it's within the COLLECTIVELY BARGAINED rules set out by MLB & the MLBPA to hold back a young player a few weeks in order to gain an extra year of control, THEN IT'S NOT A FUCKING LOOPHOLE. It is using rules that were collectively bargained by both sides. In other words, THE MLBPA AGREED TO THIS RULE!

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm on from England and tend to only watch NFL. But I'm confused about this rule. Does that not mean that every year, a team can just drop a player to the minors, effectively keeping them for their whole career?

Would changing “service time” to “years of experience” stop teams from doing this? Like counting the years they spend in the minors as experience?
@bokrusher

MLB time counts toward the player's pension. A career minor leaguer does not deserve the same benefits as a major leaguer with equal service, even though they're both pros.

Where do I start, 1. 3 of these players are actually on the opening day rosters. 2. How is a rule a "loophole?" The players association agreed to it. There's give and take in negotiations. Baseball players are ridiculously payed people and good for them for getting that money, but the owners are perfectly right to use this rule however they see fit.
@Playhouse76

Wow. 3 whole players? The thing's been going on each year for 40 years, but 3 whole players this year discounts the point entirely. You nailed it.
