For Week 21, wanted to see how monks do church. In the first 52in52, drove out to Massachusetts to the first American trappist brewery, St. Joseph Abbey. Basically, monks that made beer. Strange!
Monks are notorious for quietness, prayer, and helping the poor. What I didn't think about is what they also need to do from a job perspective to keep the abbey intact.
When looking for monasteries, this one in the St. Louis suburbs immediately caught my eye. Apparently, locals call it the "wedding cake church." It's not what I envisioned a monastery looking like for a group of monks, so drove out to find out more.
