Jill, the way you feel is EXACTLY how Kendrick wanted you to feel. You were supposed to empathize with the homeless man rather than kendrick. Kendrick was describing an all too common dilemma and he did it in an emotion evoking way. You reacted to his “ignorance” almost immediately. Kendrick Lamar is an artist who will make you think and question yourself. When Kendrick was first getting big he had this attitude that you see in this song. But imagine his situation, coming from nothing...he knows what goes on when people hand out money to the homeless. The moral is that you should do right regardless of what the homeless man does with it because we all want to “reserve a spot in heaven.” 2015 come along and he releases To Pimp A Butterfly(this song is on it) and makes in my opinion one of Hip Hop’s masterpieces.

I feel like Jill already had a certain level of appreciation for the rap genre, but I really enjoy seeing Ryan's perspective evolve. While it's true, a lot of what's on the radio are songs about "money, cars, and clothes", it's because those songs sell. Conversely, there are some amazing artists like J. Cole, Kendrick, etc who create content that allows the listener to experience life from perspectives they aren't accustomed to; and to feel, sometimes very difficult emotions, as a result. I'd be interested to see your reactions to Lost Ones by J. Cole, as well as more music from Kendrick. Thanks for all the content you've created so far. But what he does with it is between him and his god. Kendrick is in character, it is to explore a question. The importance of money is relative, to the homeless man (who is actually God in disguise) a dollar has great significance. To Kendrick it has little, but it cost him something of huge significance (his place in heaven). So money has worth that is attached by humans for exchange value, and the amount of wealth people have can change our perspective. A lot can seem a little, if you are rich. Inversely a little can seem a lot, if you have nothing. Money is not a measurement of external value. Conflating human value with monetary value, leads to chasing a false worship of something that will reveal itself ultimately to be an abyss that can never be filled, and egotism. It essentially amplifies your worst qualities, if you make it your everything and your defining feature. His character thinks he is above giving a dollar, and makes assumptions. Yet his mistake, transcends any value to be found in the material world (from his perspective as a theist).

This track is about loving money & how loving it can make you bitter, ignorant etc. Kendrick tells a story of him stopping at a gas station & being approached by a homeless man asking for money, Kendrick says no but the man keeps persisting. So Kendrick says "every nickel is mines to keep", essentially saying that his money is for him & him only, he tells the homeless man that he knows that he is begging for booze/drug money & he "recognizes this type of pan handling all the time". & At the end, the homeless man then reveals himself to be the son of God & tells Kendrick that his "potential is bitter sweet. What I usually take from this is that Christ disguised himself as a homeless man to test Kendrick, to see if he's truly worthy to walk in heaven, cause he states that he'll tell Kendrick how much a dollar cost, & brings up the price of heaven, essentially saying that the cost for spot in heaven is only a dollar. This song is also based off Mathew ch25, 31-46, Jesus is among the least of us. The Sheep & the Goats

Man, this was a rough one to do as a first ever Kendrick reaction. I understand why people suggest it, because of that end line in the third verse that brings it all together after building the story in the first couple verses and giving that 'oh shit, I get it' moment but if you miss that 'I get it' bit, you just end up with the reaction of the girl (Sorry, I don't know her name). You're not gonna be pulled into the story in the same way if you aren't acclimated to that style of writing and then missing the message in this way just kinda leaves the song to fall a little flat. Not your guys' fault, just was a poor suggestion at this point I think.

jon do Heavily disagree. I’ve been a fan of him since Section 80, and I think this is one of the best songs to recommend. It’s one of the more accessible songs (i.e. straightforward storytelling, rapping isn’t too fast, his flow stays constant, standard beat) off his best album. It can be fully appreciated outside the context of the album too, which isn’t that common for him considering all of his albums are concept albums. It doesn’t use a lot of references or vernacular that people unfamiliar with hip hop would be confused about. I’ll never understand why people recommend songs like Backseat Freestyle. Outside the context of the album, the song suggests Kendrick isn’t a good lyricist. Songs like Money Trees, ADHD, Alright, and Maad City all sound cool on their own, but they have lots of vernacular that might be too confusing or might take the reactors out of the song.
