Well I know 15 years ago my cousin who worked for Apple as a lead systems engineer for their broadcast software division was making north of $150k plus stock options before he left to work for Fox Broadcasting for north of $200k a year. He and his staff were brought into Apple when they acquired the company he was working for that built control systems for television stations and networks. Mind you at the time the first iPhone hadn't even been announced let alone released. Mind you three years earlier he had been working at a rural TV station that was paying him less than $50k a year to be their IT guy and they refused to give him a $5k raise so he applied to work for one of their system vendors who gave him a $25k raise and Apple doubled his salary there when they bought out the company, so he was beyond elated with the pay increases he had received.

While you could do better. Companies aren't going to pay FAANG salaries since Dallas isn't the Bay Area. While those salaries sound impressive (and they are), they are that way because of the cost of living and intense competition for top talent. I've actually seen many similar companies reach out to remote workers, offering them great salaries but it is still a great deal for them (win-win). I think over time, this will smooth out the extremes.

Hey Cody great video, just had one question about the stock grant. I hear stock being described this way in many public companies, and would like some clarity. Taking the entry level example, the stock grant is 24K/year. Does this mean that you are given 24K worth of shares in your first year, meaning that if the stock price were to double, your year's worth of stock grant would be worth 48K?
@CodyEngelCodes
3 жыл бұрын
Yes that is correct. You are granted the shares at the start of your employment. I have a more recent video about RSUs that is worth a watch, it goes over how I nearly doubled my RSU cash value by doing nothing.

Interesting. My company in Atlanta offers unlimited PTO. I assumed this was a way to stay competitive and keep great talent from leaving. It surprised me to hear Apple doesn't offer unlimited PTO as well.
@CodyEngelCodes
3 жыл бұрын
Unlimited PTO is only a real benefit if you take off more than 25 days a year. I made a video about this a while back, but basically unlimited PTO means you don’t accrue time off so the company owes you nothing if you leave. If you accrue PTO and leave a company they have to pay you for your unused PTO.
@rishikkabra696

@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403

@@CodyEngelCodes At my last job, they started us off with 15 days and bumped us up to 20. Honestly, at the end of every year, we’d all still have 8-12 days left and basically December was a month where nothing much got done. Unlimited PTO sounds great until reality hits: your colleagues are learning more about a new system than you are. Your colleagues are in the loop. There wasn’t a single time that I took vacation where I wasn’t checking my email to see what was going on. I think 25 days is an awesome sweet spot. You can take two two week vacations per year and still have five days to play with (obviously you still have sick days).

I have some EE friends that are working in hardware. The work is similar in many ways but EEs have some things they have to do that I don't - like traveling to China to help fix the production lines.

This is important to note as well… cost of living is absolutely insane where Apple is located. I have 1-3 years experience and I got an offer for the Cupertino office in line with what he suggested for entry level. I also got an offer to work fully remotely for 107k and continue living in the philadelphia suburbs. I plugged both offers into a cost of living calculator… 107k in suburban Philly is 339k in San Jose which would still be a 30 minute commute. Not worth it at all.
