Great tips! An extra one that I do is I have an excel sheet called wish list where I write down whenever I see or hear of a new game that sounds fun and there I can look at my "backlog" without having to actually buy them right away unless I plan to play it right away, cuz let's be real the digital inventory is just a list of games lol It makes my brain feel like "yeah, it's on the backlog, I've put it on the list!" and then I can look over the list when I actually wanna buy something. My tastes also change so sometimes I delete things off of it after a few months or years. Great way to not spend money on games I might end up not playing

Shes so right about Demos, I love final fantasy, but when FF7 Remake first came out, I was very on fence. After 10 mins into the demo I was having a blast, and immediately purchased. Obviously that's a very high profile game, but demos are a way to practically guarantee you will enjoy it. On the smaller flip side, some game really do take time to get good. I'd say some of the Tales games are like this, the fun generally is amazing once you invested X amount of hours. Tales of Beseria was a good example for me, now favourite Tales game ever. A controversial opinion, I didn't enjoy DQ11 and paid full price for it, so demos save major cash.

Wish listing is probably the main reason I do have such a bloated backlog (Deku Deals is dangerous). I've saved a lot on what I would have spent on certain games (often 50%-75%+ off most indies/third parties, 30%+ off most Nintendo Titles), but at the same time my wish listing often casts too wide of a net and I end up buying lots of things I would have just forgotten about completely and never purchased otherwise. That said, it is nice having a big library, because even if you don't play everything in it, you will always find something that you want to play on hand.
@DMGamanda

I had the same issue so every month i go back in and i review my wish list. So many times i think why did i even add that. Or there has been more info out on the game. That why i keep my wish list to no more than 15 games. Cos as you say otherwise you just end up with this crazy wish list. Hope I’m not stating the obvious here but just sharing as i had same issue. I actually just went in to my switch Wish List last night and had a massive cull as it had crept up to over 25 games. I’ve now got it down to just about 10. There were just so many on there really when I looked hard that were either so similar to things I already had that just wasn’t any point or actually now had little videos and I was like umm not so sure that them now et cetera et cetera so I was able to really be very strict with myself, and cut it right down. Anyway, good luck, Amanda:-)

Great video ! So much nostalgia about how we'd get only a few games per year when we were kids! I used to borrow/lend some games from/to Friends and still do. On Switch at least, I find that the end of the year has massive sales (before, during and After black friday, same for christmas but Also After !) It helps me get the games I'm hesitant to pay full price normally (cos the reviews are very différent from One reviewer to another). Also physical copies of games at supermarkets (I live in France) are 20% off compared to the eShop and specialized games stores.

I was wondering how I never seemed to buy games that turned out to be crap growing up but then I remembered, we had a rental store for movies where you could also rent games. I went from wanting to own a console and my parents not buying me one for many years, to having one but not enough games, where I had to play the same one for months before I got a new one, to just the right amount, to too many, and to overwhelmingly many now. Most of the ones I've bought and not yet played were purchased for good prices. I no longer buy anything gaming related on day one, because the times I have I've felt it wasn't worth it and right now I have no shortage of games to play. Yes, online social interaction has made me more prone to be influenced to buy games that back in the day I wouldn't have given a chance because I was afraid of wasting money on one I wouldn't like. There are so many games that I wish I had given a chance back in the day, now that I have good information on them. I have a rule not to spend more than $15 ($20 in extreme cases) on a digital game, because I don't feel like I own my digital games and can't resell them like you said. Reselling is definitely a good way to play more on a budget if you're not necessarily a collector. I do purchase a lot of second hand physical games if they're in good condition. New games, it has to be on sale and for like a rare "new low" clearance price, not the periodic every two month sales which are always the same. You might as well consider those the "real" price.

This might sound a little contradictory when talking about budget, but I’d have to say my Steam Deck lol Being ~$400, you *could* buy a lot of Switch games, but with my Steam Deck, I have sooo many free games from emulation (like N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, PS2, PS3, Switch, etc). I can also pirate PC games instead of buying from Steam (I don’t, but I have that option). And then when there r sales on Steam store, there’s big discounts on many games like 50%, 75%, 90% off. For example, Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. Phenomenal games! I love it. But I feel like Persona 5 base specifically could have been about 10 hours shorter. That last 10 or so hours just drug on for me. I was ready for it to end. Then I still had the royal chapter which I kinda felt drug on a bit too. At the same time, I love a game like Bioshock. It's fun and very well done and like 10 hours long. I would have happily spent $60 for it new, but a friend gifted it to me years after it came out.

If I can get the game on steam I prefer doing that because games are usually cheaper. As for how much I spend it depends. I spent around 500 dollars on the steam Christmas sale that is because I got a birthday gift card that helped. During the spring sale I spent around 200 dollars. I watch reviews first before I buy anything unless something looks good on steam then I will buy it if the price is good. I also rarely could afford new games, but I generally liked what I bought. Zelda: Minish Cap, DragonBall Z Budokai 3, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja, DragonBall Advanced Adventure, Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter, were but some of the games I got for my own money. Zelda you can never go wrong with and I was a huge DragonBall and later Naruto fan so those games were also no brainers. Kingdom Hearts was word of mouth from brother who played it at his school, and Jak and Daxter as well as SSX Tricky I played at the Fritidsklub. Oh, and then there was Super Mario 64 DS that I got because I'd already played it on N64 and knew it was great. Resident Evil DS because I was a horror fan, and Another Code, because I liked the pre-rendered background on the back of the box. So yeah, I never really bought a game "blindly". It was either word of mouth or I was just great at picking.

I've collected for Switch since the launch on March 3 in 2017. Only physical games. I think I've bought 50 games now so it's around 8 games per year as an average. I always try to buy games on good sales. It's not always possible. I've bought an extra copy of a few games for example Super Mario 3D All Stars that was a campaign release. Same for some special/collectors edition. On my Switch I've bought a few digital downloads but that's only copies of the physical games that I already got. And of course on sale, for example Castlevania Anniversary Editition. I don't know exactly how much I've spent on these games but it's around 50 games times 40 dollar per game and rounded a bit up. Also bought some Amiibos but not that many. Only a few. A great way to play a lot and pay as little as possible is this: Play demos Play games made free for a limited time (I think Captain Toad and Metroid Dread was such games) Play free games that got micro transactions but never pay for any upgrades or only the most important (keep track on HOW much you spend!) Pay for Switch Online with those extra consoles (40-45 dollar/year) and get more than 100 good/great retro games And I agree, there's really pros and cons with both physical copies and digital downloads! I want these two ways to play to co-exist forever.

I keep track of how much totally spent in free-to-play games too. Like Genshin Impact, I spent what I would usually spend on a game around $70 dollars 👍👍

How did you know I was watching on TV?! I sometimes don't buy games in months but if I catch a New Game Stuff from Happy Console Gamer or Metal Jesus Rocks pickups vids I find out about ames I never heard about before and start picking them up or hunting for them at a good price.

I get so many games I don't need or don't end up playing because it was on sale. I have to avoid the sales sometimes

Oof, I've been trying to avoid buying games I'll never play, so research is crucial. I have a small backlog, but I'm trying to get to every single one. The worst is when I finally DO get to a game, only to find I don't actually like it (recently, Bloodstained, but only due to the performance just being too rough even for me). Since I mostly buy for Switch now, I usually spend anywhere from around $15-70. I tend to buy physically unless there's no option but digital.

This topic is huge, i think most adult doesnt have the time but have more money to spend for gaming (unlike teen years). That's a shame actually. Many demo prevented me to buy a game since i wasnt into it that much or "do i need to buy this game with my backlog?". Anyway i kinda bought all games i'm interested in. I hope i can be on tracks with money work and release. But it's kinda a gamble to be honest. (Many good release in 3 months and i'm behind). People just should (i should) finish my backlog, play one game at a time and so on. It would make saving more easy. Games which release won't disappear anyway. The lack of time is atrocious. Everyday of my life, i feel like i lack time since i'm working (6/7 even 13/7 sometimes) that's so boring.

I want 1 hour of gameplay per $2 spent. That's a pretty good deal considering going to the movies can cost about $15 for less than two hours.

1. I trust you :D 2. I am that type of person that buys physical games to sell them later. But actually it is not very popular. Among my gaming friends, I know only one person doing so... because he is poor.

I tend to watch straight gameplay vids vs actual reviews I'm usually worried I'd get influenced by a big personality.... Metacritic hold no value to me

My ''pile of shame'' as in games i haven't got round to playing yet is 19 deep! I play mainly on Series X and PS5....... On both Game Pass and PS Plus, there is so many i haven't even touched yet, let alone the ones iv'e already bought. This is why, no matter how much i want to play Dead Space remake, RE4 remake and Dead Island 2 coming up..... Those 3 right there would cost me £170 combined! And i know they would end up just sitting in a pile for weeks on end, that by time i get round too playing them, they would have reduced in price massively. I think a lot of people suffer from FOMO..... Fear Of Missing Out, so they feel the need to go and buy every game as soon as it releases, even if they can't afford it. Just remember, games will always be there..... They aren't going anywhere. I doubt i'll finish the pile i have until July/August time, and no doubt by then there will be more releases lol.

I know I overspended on games. I have collected abit for the sake of collecting. But I always buy games that I in fact wants to play. But I always wait before buying games. So almost never spend more than €20 for games. I have so many games on my backlog that I dont need to play new games. So there is a tip. Wait for games to go down in price. Most do (not flagship Switch games though) Concerning length. I dont mind 10-20h games. There is soo many games I want to play so I would rather have shorter games so I can actually play the ones I have 😅

How? Don't you have a job? school? family? Also, $600 per month? per year? Or are you just joking to see if anyone would believe or question this?

I Buy games day one. been playing games since 1987 c64 games are harder than any from soft games. I usually finish every game i play apart from the rare one i get wrong. I still keep the game to remind me of how stupid I was from buying a terrible game
