I managed the corporate aviation department for a large corporation. We had two jets, and Falcon 7X (13 passenger 3 engine jet and a Falcon 2000, 8 passenger twin engine jet) both considered large jets. We flew about 400-500 hours a year total. Employed 5 full time pilots, a secretary and a two full time maintenance employees, no full time flight attendant, we would hire an attendant for international flights only, domestic flights you got your own lunch and drinks!) we also leased a private hanger facility at Naples airport in Florida. Our annual budget all in of operating and fixed cost (including the lease expense on the jets, we did not own them) was about $8-$9 million. It was a fabulous way to travel and the only person who ever complained about the cost was the CFO, he hated the jets not just because of the cost, but he was scared to fly on anything smaller then a 737, which was good because he was a real PIA and no one wanted to fly with that kill joy anyway!

A lot of jets aren’t rated for one pilot so you have to pay for two pilots. Then you have more than one engine that needs maintenance, fuel, and regular inspections. These big planes burn lots of fuel. Not that I can afford it but getting a smaller plane like a single engine turbo prop such as a pc12 is much cheaper to run by comparison but still more than the average person could afford.

If it’s for personal use then probably. These big jets are often owned by people with big businesses and the jets allow them to make more money than they could without it. If you don’t fly much but still want to fly private for leisure then chartering would be the way to go. For international flights, just buy a first class ticket because you’d have to charter a huge plane which is outrageously expensive compared to something like a pc12. I’ve never flown private but I can see why people do. I can’t stand commercial airports.

Though I lack the funds and a passport with extensive visa-free access, watching this channel inspires me to dream of owning a private plane. I’m hopeful that within the next decade, we’ll see the development of long-range, smaller planes powered by electricity or solar energy that are also affordable. This way, I could enjoy breakfast in Pisa, Italy, and dinner in Antalya, Turkey, all in the same day. The world is both small and magnificent, and it’s regrettable that many of us don’t get to explore more of it during our lifetimes. Ultimately, technology should be leveraged to improve the quality of life for everyone.

Size doesn't always matter, if you compare the private jets like the car industry (like a Honda or typical Asian car companies is cheaper to maintain and drive than a Ford/General Motors). If I'm correct, Honda Jet has lower operating costs than a Gulfstream, Learjet, Citation X, Boeing, or Airbus. But they still cost more than a Cessna 172. Maybe the Comac C919 is cheaper to operate than a 737 or a320, but there's no guarantee that it's safer. Problem is that there's no accurate operating costs.
