Why not recommend your local bee store? Support the local brick and mortar and have a valuable source for questions you may have as a new bee keeper. It may cost a bit more but information gained is well worth it.

I agree, support local. A local Apiary could be quite the drive as they are spaced 100 miles apart from each other for some areas. I found an Amish Apiary 30 miles from me and their prices were very reasonable. Cypress wood boxes. Avg cost of a complete hive 2 deep,1 medium w/ acorn double wax foundation frames, bottom , top and inner cover $180 per hive. They also did have valuable info coming out of winter of what not to do. As I thought to induce brood rearing and feed pollen sub . Here we can get another cold snap and if they have too much brood to keep warm it could collapse the entire colony

@@StopCrying-sv6mc Not sure how you are seeing that. She wasn't trying to scam anyone. She was fishing through supply sites for their prices. Some are higher priced than others. The higher priced suppliers do have quality products as to tight fitting less air potential air gaps but the bees can work with about anything. Cypress wood is just as good as Cedar it is rot and insect resistant and does last 50 years.

2nd hand brand new baby, most of my gear is used it can save you thousands of dollars. Best part about used gear many times it's the best deal out there, plus you are recycling. Most wont agree with me but In my opinion used is the way to go. I try to buy hive tools in 2's, I think I am up to like 6 or 8 laying around now.😂 I'd say you don't need a full suit but totally get a good jacket.

I am fairly new to bee keeping but have the highest trust regard for Hillco. I have ordered multiple items from a yellow bee suit, an entry level extractor, plastic bottom boards etc. And have been to thier store once. Thy shipping is free for orders over a certain price. They have complete hive packages for just a few dollars more than your video examples already assembled which could save a new bee keeper even more if they would need tools clamps and hardware to assemble the box pieces for the cheaper hive starters. I do enjoy your videos and hope my opinions are taken as only that my opinions. Keep the videos coming!

Just a question but why do you say migratory lids aren’t meant to be overwintered outdoors? Every video I have watched of Bob Binnie and other commercial beekeepers have migratory lids year round.

That overwintering statement makes no sense.

Ian Stepler in Canada uses migratory lids with double bubble/ poly film underneath year round. He overwinters as single brood boxes in a shed, but it’s still effin cold!

Hive tools are just a carpentry moulding tool or flat pry bar. If you purchase them this way they cost between $4 - $8. God finds online and great timing. I was looking to 2.5x my colony count and this is the time to get ready. Ty for the good content!

Thanks for the information! Still trying to evaluate if I have a chance of success with beekeeping where I live. I’m on approximately 1/2 acre in a suburban neighborhood very near a major Florida city. Any thoughts on my location would be appreciated.

What about gloves? I’ve seen everything from latex to leather. Your thoughts and input would be extremely valuable to a “new-bee”😊 like me.

I use the venom steel black nitrile gloves, they’re my favorite bc I can grip the frames better and still use my fingers. Leather gloves for me are too big and bulky so I start bumping frames around. The thinner nitril gloves the bees are able to sting thru, for some reason they bounce right off the venom steel brand

Your hives have for the most part, migratory top covers. How well do they work for you vs the telescoping covers in your area? Michigan isnt it?

Great question! The video I have coming out next week talks about this. The migratory lids are great…until winter comes. They are not made be used on hives overwintering outdoors. Since there is nothing to hang over the hive body, water leaked into all of the hives I had migratory lids on and killed the cluster. Maybe there’s a trick to it that I don’t know about….but telescoping covers are definitely better at preventing that from happening

Where ever you can find the best deal and total price, I broke it up the way I did bc I found that was how I found to save the most money although some companies offer free shipping if you buy over $100 worth of stuff so that’s something to take into account too.
