Extra questions you guys have asked answered! (Also many Egyptians have commented that my tip of 50 EGP was way too high. I knew it was an overly good tip but it sounds like it was a really good tip. Oops. It seems that 25-ish is fine). How much was the hot air balloon ride in Luxor? $50 How did I end up getting out of the airport? I had to exchange my EGP to USD. How much is data for phones? Extremely cheap, maybe 50 EGP / 2 weeks. How much was my flight from China? $300. $70 HK to KL, $230 KL to Cairo. When is the best weather? In my opinion, October. How did you book tours? Mainly through my hotel, or by making friends. How did you book hotels? Online (Hostelworld, Airbnb) or with the help of other hotels. Did cheap food ever make me sick? No. Can you pay everywhere with credit cards? Definitely not. Carry cash. What about your horse? I rented my horse by the month ($200 / month). He is a very beautiful, pureblood Arabian horse, so this is on the expensive side. I planned to buy him if I had stayed in Egypt. He lives at Desert Storm in Giza and is named Messi. If anyone goes to visit him and gives him a treat, I will love you forever. :D Total Expenses / Month *This isn't exact, just as best as I could average out accommodation $8 / night ($240/mo) - low because I got a monthly rate 2nd month food $5 / day ($150 / mo) adventures $30 / week ($120 / mo) - that's assuming I did 3 a week at approx. $10 each transport $15 / week ($60 / mo) - high because I traveled around the country a lot coffee $1 / day ($30 / mo) - I really like coffee my horse $200 / month (probably a unique cost, but I thought I'd list it) TOTAL - $800 / month (without horse, $600 / month)

I have to disagree with my egyptian homies here. I am Egyptian/Canadian so I know what tipping looks like in Egypt. If you look like a foreigner and you tip 5-10 pounds like most egyptians do....people will be offended...even 20-30 is borderline offensive...its just the way it is....i think 30-50 is good for a foreigner. This also depends on the service your getting...for example you check into a hotel and you give the bell hop a 50...he will be satisfied...but you don't give a 50 to the cab driver...no way jose. give him like 10...that is fine....(even as a foreigner). If you give us a list of examples, I can tell you what my opinion is on each individual circumstance.....Egyptians are generally cheap (don't pretend that we aren't my fellow egyptians) but don't listen to the people who say don't tip anything.

loved your videos, as an Egyptian, tipping isn't needed. it's just a polite thing to do but isn't a must. 50 pounds for someone who helped you for hours is okay. But being at a restaurant or something like this and your check came and it's 44.50 for examples, you leave 50. That's the "okay and normal" tip.

As an advise from an Egyptian : 1- For a TAXI, definitely UBER. 2- Don't ever ever ride a TUK TUK. 3- Don't trust food thats really cheap, unless its Foul, Falafel or Koshary. 4- Don't Tip unless needed, also tipping max is 15 EGP.
@ann-mariemeurs952

Considering how cheap everything is in Egypt I would probably tip 100EGP to everyone regardless of the service. It is quite literally a couple of dollars. It wouldnt affect my life in any huge way at all but it could make a big difference to their lives. So many live below the line in Egypt. If you can afford to part with $2 USD then i think you should. I also wouldnt haggle on an asking price either. Id either accept it if i deem it fair or decline. These people who swarm you to by there wares arent "money hungry". They are simply trying to make a living. I would urge all tourists to keep this in mind when travelling. I'm not saying to just give all your money away im just saying that generosity is a good thing if you can afford it.

I just returned from a few days in Cairo. I tipped 100EGP on almost everything (especially meals) and everyone was very thankful. I actually have the bathroom attendants at the airport on my departure all my EGP 500 in my pocket since I was leaving the country, you would have thought they had won the lottery there where so thankful. 100 EGP was exchanging through the ATM and my bank at $5.00 USD, I tip more than &5.00 in the US for most things. Most people will take USD by the way but you are better paying in EGP always.

Hi there, I am the author of the book, “The Tomb Opens”. If anyone wants to know more details about the Egyptian culture before or after visiting Egypt, pick up a copy of this novel. You’ll be able to learn about egyptians’ emotional patterns, attitudes & behavioural cues. Egypt is a very rich culture. The typical Egyptian is by nature generally modest, friendly, helpful to the extent of giving you his own jacket if you are cold. Certainly egyptians have been through a lot that buried their genuinely beautiful nature to a great extent. Yet once you trigger that buried side in them, it will easily surface up. Enjoy. Amel A.

If you could by any chance let me know how you stayed in Egypt for so long with an entry visa I would love to know since I thought most countries only recieved 30 day visas on entry (UK citizen here) and it would save me tons of hassle if I knew I could receive a longer stay visa on entry! Thank you anyway and all the best!
@Travellight21

That's great! I extended my visa and got a Touristic Residency Visa. I got 6 months. Girl... it's definitely possible. But you're going to have an adventure getting this. You will need to go to the Cairo visa office in Tahrir Square (I am not sure of the specific name, but everyone will know what you are talking about). Go with your passport. Go inside the building, ignore the lines outside. On the first floor, find the guys doing copies of passport and taking photos. They will be yelling loudly and impossible to miss. All this should cost about 20 EGP. Go up the stairs, and ask people where "visa extension" is (this building is huge and crowded). You'll reach a long, long hall of counters. Find the desk with police where they give you application forms to fill out. If you can't find it in the sea of people, ask any policeman you happen to see for help. Fill out forms. List an address in Cairo even if you are staying in Giza, or somewhere else, because if you fill out "Giza," they will send you to a different, inferior office. Ask for 6 months, but be aware you may get less. Go ALL the way down to the end of the counters and find the window for "Tourist Residency." You must leave your passport with them. You will need to go to a different area of the building (same floor) and wait in line at the "bank" to pay for the visa. It was about 700 EGP for me. Go back to the window at the end. They will tell you to come back the next day to pick up your passport and visa. Do not go the next day. It will not be ready. Wait 2 or 3 days, go back up the stairs to the same hall of counters. Go to window 38. Hope that they say it is ready. They will ask you something (I honestly forget what the point of going in the morning was, but it is necessary), and then tell you to come back at 1:00 to pick up your things. As you'll be there in the morning (to avoid crowds and insane lines), just wait a few hours in the area. Go back at 12:00 and stand VERY CLOSE to window 38. Soon there will be so many people that it is literally impossible to get to the window when they call out your passport. Very likely, things will run late, and passports will not actually be handed out at 1:00. There is also a chance that they just turn everyone away and say come back tomorrow (happened to me). But hopefully they are. They will start calling out passports. Now, what does this mean? Well, if your name is John Smith from the UK, they may call out "Smith!" They may call out "England!" or London, or just John... Who knows? You'll have to be listening carefully. This is why it's important to be very close to the window, as the crowd will be so thick, people in the back not only cannot hear, but also can't reach the window. Once the passport's owner is somehow heard shouting "That's me! That's me!" all of the other people help pass the passport back to them. Once you hear your name, take your passport, check your visa, and celebrate. The people waiting in the office with me gave me high fives, lol. If you want multiple entry, you can then go to another window and get permission in your visa for this (I personally did not do this). Or... you can just fly out of the country every 30 days. Cheapest flights are generally to Jordan for $70 one-way. I know this is a lot of info but it's a real process. Have a great time in Egypt!

Greetings from Egypt,, I am very happy to hear that you had fun in Egypt and the prices were cheap and reasonable, however I am very disappointed in our authorities for refusing your visa payment in our own currency. A Falouka would cost around 150 EGP depending on it's size and how much time you are willing to spend. It is very often for me to take a nile cruise in a falouka, so prices might have changed. Just make sure you have an Egyptian friend around in local low class areas.

OmG your videos are always so informative, love it! So weird, I'm travelling to Egypt so I've been researching and have read everywhere that the train Cairo - Luxor / Aswan is like 100 USD 🤔 maybe because it's the overnight train? I'm trying to go from Dahab to Petra and from Petra back to Cairo, no clue how I'm gonna do that 😂 Thanks so much for this video and keep posting please 😍 We love you ❤️
@Travellight21

I know what you are talking about - that's a different sort of train that is catered toward tourists. It is a sleeper train. I thought it looked really cool, but the price is extremely unreasonable. The train that I took was a first class overnight train. The catch is that foreigners are not allowed to BOOK this train. If I had gone to the train station and tried to buy the ticket, I would have been refused and told to book the expensive train that you've mentioned. However, simply ask someone at your hotel, or an Egyptian friend, to go buy the ticket for you. It is 100% legal for foreigners to take the normal train, they just aren't allowed to BOOK it. But if you have your ticket, you're good. There are plenty of tours that operate day trips, or longer visits, to Petra from Dahab. And I know that flights from Amman to Cairo or Amman to Alexandria (and then take a bus to Cairo) are pretty cheap. I researched all of this a lot because I was planning a trip to Jordan from Egypt. It didn't end up happening but hopefully sometime soon! Have an awesome trip.

the fastest way from Dahab to Petra would be taking the ferry from Nuweibaa, Egypt to Aqaba, Jordan. there maybe a ferry from Dahab to Aqaba during high season but i'm not sure though.

@Travellight21
6 жыл бұрын
Sim cards and internet for your phone is going to be very cheap - a dollar or two for a lot of usage. When it's time to refill, you can do so on your phone, but everything will be in Arabic, so it's best to ask your hotel or an Egyptian friend to help you.
@HelmyBedair

as @travellight said it's easy and cheap to get sim cards here. we have three carriers in eg [ Vodafone, Etisalat, and Orange ] and as an Egyptian, I recommend to use Vodafone for better signal cover and better support. you just need to go to the store of any distributors above and you can find that using GPS and you have to bring your passport and it'll take little time to get your sim and choose the bundle that suitable your use. btw it'll cost you 20 pounds for sim and about 100 pounds for a bundle maybe less than that it's upon your needs. if you need to get more info about VODAFONE bundles visit: www.vodafone.com.eg/vodafoneportalWeb/en/P29400372361443526430644 I hope that I helped you and if you need more info don't hesitate to ask

@Travellight21

Hi Anna, my flight from China to Egypt was $300. In order to get this flight, I left from Hong Kong airport rather than Shenzhen. I took a separate flight from HK to Kuala Lumpur ($70). Then I took another flight from Kuala Lumpur to Cairo ($230). Flights to Egypt straight from China are more expensive, but flights out of Kuala Lumpur are cheaper.

As an Egyptian I'd say that apart from temples and some places like Cairo tower where it's officially more expensive for foreigners, you might get scammed from sellers, guides, people who rent Camels or Horses near the Pyramids, and Taxi drivers (Use Uber instead for sure). So, watch out for these things. If you want any kind of info or assistance prior your trip to Egypt I'd be more than happy to help.

Omar Sakr I think in tourist places 50 EGP is a normal tip. Yes we tip as egyptians 20 EGP or 10 sometimes. But it's OK there to tip 50 EGP because it equals to 2.82 dollars so it's not very expensive

I meant 100 EGP, sorry if I said "dollar." :D The hot air balloon was $50. They told me that they gave me a discounted price because I spoke to them in Arabic (normally $60) but I'm not sure if that was true haha.

I am Egyptian and its price was 1200 EGP, and also couldn't find a place it was fully booked :( This is because it was in the Christmas time, but normally it should be 1000 EGP which is a little bit over 55$ .. so they definitely gave you a good price being a tourist!

i appreciate your honesty about egypt on all your videos and specially on that one you already discover it with majority of its culture but let me tell you that you are so humble and generous with a tip like 50 and 25 pound in egypt when you tip with 5 its to enough for them in special cases you may tip with 20 or 25 only on 5 stars restaurants and bars hope to see you on real and have a round on down town and tell you about the history of 2011 Revelation with documented videos about the artistic graffiti telling about the rev. and its hero's that artistic paints few still and a lot has been removed let me know if you interested on the tour it will cost you nothing may be a cup of tea would be enough

How did you get the US Dollars, if you got Egypt money in the ATM - and they wouldn't take it, how did you get the dollars at the airport?
@Travellight21
6 жыл бұрын
I had to exchange my Egyptian currency from the ATM into USD. It was pretty crazy, because in order to withdraw money from my U.S. bank account, I have to pay a fee to convert from dollars to EGP. But then I had to pay ANOTHER fee in the airport to convert it right back into dollars again! :/
@Travellight21

Actually when I asked them at the airport what to do, the officials gave me the advice to go beg for money from other tourists. Lol. It was a big headache, so that's why I was sure to warn people about it in this video.

I can't believe that you don't have a bank account without fees. My TD bank account doesn't charge any fee to use other bank's ATM and no foreign transaction fee. They also refund me for the fee other bank charged at end of each billing circle. I just have to keep $2500 in my account. I know Charles Schwab bank should have similar account also.
@Travellight21

enzhus I know, I am going to get a Charles Schwab as soon as I’m in the U.S. for my next visit! The problem for me is that they require proof of residency, like utility bills or rent in my name, and I haven’t lived in the U.S. for 2 years. Hopefully there will be a way around this.
