@@bratwurst7774replying a year later since I watched the vid again. but taking everything in stock might not be the right move. you don’t get your stock every 2 weeks. it might be every 3 months. when you receive the stock grant, it gets taxed. at that point, you have to immediately sell a small portion to pay for living expenses. if the value goes down, 100% of your pay just went down. if it goes up, congrats 100% of your received stocks have gone up. it’s super risky. in the short term stocks don’t change drastically and constantly go up and down. over the long term it’s a gamble to assume Netflix will be dominant (remember Blockbuster’s fall).

Well for starters, Facebook/Meta was actually having a hard time picking up engineers because of all the bad press they've been getting the last few years. That's why they disrupted the market and increased salaries the back half of 2021. After that the pay difference was so high, SWEs were running to get in on the action. Then in December 2021, the other Big Tech companies started to raise their salaries as well. This sort of warfare has been going on for at least a year and it's causing major shifts in engineering talent.

It’s definitely a unique approach, and it’s a way they’ve been able to retain all of their talent. Plus, the way stock works at tech companies, you often can’t sell it until you’ve stayed with the company for a few years, so people who leave early don’t end up getting all of it.

Keep up the great work. 👍

@@kaz2499 Ok, I just talked with a career advisor today and she thinks I was coerced into the position I am in because of some mental disabilities I have (namely a case of Aspergers), which hinders my communication skills. Apparently, my current employer has a track record of going to prestigious universities and tracking down mentally hindered people like me and get us. Thing is, I can't exactly quit because I'm living paycheck to paycheck. I also can't quit because I'm in the US on a visa so if I quit, I'm deported... So like genuine question, if I have a mental disability, does that mean that my market value is low? I'm still trying to wrap my whole head around this stuff. What exactly determines market value of an employee? Is it just whatever you get paid? Like, if you or someone else could help me on this that'd be great!
@kaz2499
2 жыл бұрын
@@sciencemanguy 1. Depends on the mental disability, but I don't think that is actually the reason for your pay. Unfortunately, people will take advantage of new immigrants, especially with your temporary immigration status being used against you. 2. Your market value isn't "lower", but rather unknown. Both the employer and employee come into the negotiation. Your employer, knowing your were vulnerable, took advantage of you and gained better terms. You had no choice. My dad experienced a similar environment, but he got married so he didn't have deportation hanging over his head. 3. First, I would advise doing a lot of research online as to what job titles are linked with your abilities. AI Specialist seems to be very niche, but can you handle the traditional software engineering role for a certain tech stack, for example? I would look up "technical resumes" on google to see if your resume is well made and presented. You basically need to do a lot of research regarding hiring practices, market value, what your job is, etc. Ascertain who you are and what your value is within the context of your field (comp sci). 4. I would start making an excel of job listings that are less than a month old, either manually or through scraping. Determine which companies would be willing to employ you. There is a huge shortage of talent, so now is a great time to find another job. 5. Start applying to 1/2/3/etc. jobs a day once you have your cover letter and resume perfect (have the career advisor review it). The key is massive quantity of application and attempting to get hits. 6. Review your employee contract with a lawyer specialized in employment law or at least familiar with it. Need to make sure there are no dangerous clauses like noncompetes or required employment periods. This is all I can think of off the top of my head. You recognized that you were being taken advantage of and that it the first step. Now, make sure to do your due diligence from now on. Best of luck.

Whether this is due to loss in confidence of market, their companies, or the economy as a whole is something (or perhaps because of something else entirely, such as worries of tax hikes) I haven't the slightest idea of. Musk has sold billions in recent months in TSLA Bezos has sold about 10 billion in AMZN Zuckerberg has sold about 4.5 billion in META Two Google founders have collectively have sold about 3 billion Nadella has sold half of his MSFT shares, equating to about 300 million I wonder if this is correlation, or a general downward trend in the tech industry? @Codebagel

It is an interesting trend to look into. Right now there’s definitely a tech bubble that’s bursting, alongside the global recession that seems to be just starting. With layoffs and hiring freezes in the tech space, only time will tell if this is temporary or if tech salaries and jobs will start to slow down. Personally, I believe it’s similar to the stock market. Through recessions things fall a bit, but eventually, they return to their place. These huge companies demand top talent and will continue to keep salaries at a competitive rate, so the only way I could see compensation falling in the long run is if every large tech firm decided to collude and drop salaries together. Thanks for the insightful comment! I really enjoy having these types of conversations!

Amazon comp changed a lot in 2022, basically you can make shift in your video total comp L5 is now for L4, total comp for L6 is now given to L5, I don't know how much recent L6 are making but that's a looot more than the recent hike. Seems like you base your number on levels fyi and you their average is about all their data including historical data.

What do those E5 - E9 roles mean?
@Codebagel
2 жыл бұрын
Think of those as “code names” that companies use to label their employees’ levels. So someone who is new to the company is at the “E5” level. If they get promoted, they are now at the “E6” level. It’s a way to measure seniority and skill level.

It’s insane amounts of money 💵 being a software engineer! You can skip medical school and the stress including number of years in college. You can become self taught and learn coding online. The challenge is how to get foot in the door at one these Fortune 500 companies. I happen to know someone working at one but 1st gotta keep learning and building a portfolio. Those bootcamps are the real deal people 🤘

Why FAANG? and not GANAF or GAFAN ? Google deser be the first they pay the best. they pay youtubers. They invest on R&D like quantum computing. And netflix the last one because want the best of the best for streaming movie? hahahaha Automatization, hydroponic, space propulsion.... and Netflix want the best of the best for showing movie? hahahaha OMG.
