An elderly lady down the street from me wanted a tree cut down in her backyard because it was too close to her house. I volunteered and went over with my chain saw. I was shocked when I saw it was a mature Sango Kaku, about 20 feet tall and almost as wide. She said her late husband had planted it in the late 80s. Healthy, but in desperate need of a good pruning. This was last spring and I asked her if she would be willing to wait until the fall so I could dig it up instead. She agreed. I offered to pay for it and she said having it gone would be payment enough. I dug it up on Thanksgiving weekend and transplanted it in my front yard. No leaves yet, but I see buds growing on the branches. I think it's going to make it!

@@cindyl3916 Yes. Unfortunately it is struggling in the heat right now. It started coming back really nicely in the spring. I gave it a shot of Miracle Grow and I think I overdid it a little bit because the leaves all shriveled up literally the day after, but I followed the directions exactly. I've been really on top of watering it right and not giving it anymore fertilizer or anything else. The tips of a lot of the branches have died off, but there is slow new growth coming out of the trunk of the tree and little leaves sprouting. They look healthy, but all the bigger leaves look like they've been through a war and the tree looks really thinned out. It is still very alive though. I'm hoping I can just keep nursing the rest of the season and next year it will come back full and healthy again. I'll never Miracle Grow a tree that is in shock again though.

@@bkilpatr100 Wow! This is fascinating to me. I believe you’re doing everything well and spring will be your bonanza. She’s a tough old bird. Fox Farm has an excellent Japanese Maple fertilizer. It’s crumbles but I made a tea per directions on bag but added a bit more water. I gave it to my not so happy Bloodgood in spring and she put out a foot of growth from then till now. I was so curious about transplanting a larger older tree. Thinking one day I may do that. So thank you so much for replying. Very helpful information. You did good and it’ll come back to you. Thanks again!

@@bkilpatr100 I would have an arborist come in and assess your tree and give you some guidance. The tree you describe is will probably take years, nearly a decade, for the tree to fully establish it's root system again. And in the meantime it is going to require a metric shit ton of water for the next 15 years. Talking 1-1.5 gallons per inch of trunk diameter when measured 6-12 inches above the ground. So if your tree's trunk is 9 inches in diameter you are looking at about 14 gallons of water per week for 9 years in order to adequately irrigate it to establish it's roots. And really for the 3 months after planting you should have been watering that much each time 2-3 times per week.

Your reply ‘The value of your maple tree is what a buyer’s willing to pay’ is spot on! That goes for real estate, cars, watches, etc. I’m a bonsai collector, so value thru that lens is different still. Thanks guys, nice video.

Matt or Tim- I have bought several 1 gallon Japanese maples from Mr. Maple. ALL have grown and done well. But WHERE do you guys get your rooting stock from with which you graft the specific cultivars? All my Mr. Maple trees are grafted, but where do you get these plants that you graft on to and make the new trees? I am amazed at the number of grafted trees you guys have available, but the root stock production is even more intriguing! Anyway, love the channel and I am hopeful that I will come up to your nursery sometime this summer and get some more trees from Mr. Maple to plant out in my garden here in Birmingham area. Thanks again and keep up the great work!~

In the past we have typically grown our own from seed from trees my grandmother planted in the 50s. If it’s a poor seed production year we maybe forced or outsource but some years we have grown 100k for rootstock

The big, old ones can sell for thousands of dollars however they also cost thousands of dollars to transplant. The big ones that are too large to carry require heavy machinery to lift out of the ground and like a semi truck flatbed to transport. Basically not worth it unless it's a unique specimen and money isn't an option. Most of the larger ones I've seen are fairly common cultivars like crimson queen.

Great video I often wonder this. Sometimes when you bring up worth it seems to rekindle a person's passion or interest in a older larger tree that they take less care of because it is fully established. These videos are the perfect way to start the morning and learn new info!! 👍

We always try to get larger a sizes in fun ones. We did sell odd several stock plants in that video. Lately there has been so much interest and shortages we sell out in 1 gallons before they get potted up. We will offer larger ones again though just takes time

Hey, we just had a tree service come in and cut down some Xylosmas in our backyard and they were NOT supposed to touch our Japanese Maple tree. Walked outside to check and they frickin stumped it to the ground! It was about 20 years old, what would the cost be for that? In our area for a 24 gallon Japanese Maple its $395. But with the age of ours, what would approximate cost be to deduct from the bill? Any help and knowledge is appreciated, Thanks!

I bought a city lot a few years ago and it has a rather large mable on it. Nice for share on the lot but I don’t have the money to build a house on it so maybe I can sell the tree to pay for a house or pay myself back for the cost of the lot, 2400 dollars.

Thanks for the information. We just bought a house that has one. I kinda don’t like the tree (I’m just not a huge fan of non-natives). Someone told me “Someone will pay you to take that away”. I thought they were full of sh!t at first but that sounds pretty good to me since I was considering cutting it down. I had no idea they were at all desirable.
