@@deepalkessa8938 The cost of tickets today is ridiculous. I don't know how young music fans today can afford them for the big acts. I was into punk at the time, so that's where my money went mostly. I bought tickets for Led Zeppelin's show at the Chicago Stadium in 1980 for $7.50. I still have them, because John Bonham died the very day I bought tickets. The price of those tickets in today's money would be $38. Thirty eight fkn dollars. It was a _"soul-sucking," non-creative job_ that helped pay the bills when I wasn't gigging, which had the _flexibility_ to take time off for gigs or tours (in bars and concert halls). A lot of musicians, actors and other creative types worked the phones back then, along with unskilled folks. We could *buy 2 tickets* (max) for most shows, internally, but we paid full price (minus service fees) and never got top-notch seats (to prevent scalping, with an _instant firing_ if caught), so I mainly bought tickets for reserved or standing-room, general admission shows at concert halls, avoiding stadiums. I haven't gone to a big show since seeing The The at a large concert hall about 5 years ago. Ukulele on the JHRA theme tune was a cut-above, and could even go one less than 4-stings by utilising a three-string Appalachian dulcimer to create a unique and captivating vibe. Ticket pricing is indeed at its most extreme with pop-stars nowadays, but even for major rock and metal acts you need to pay top dollar to get decent places in arenas. The Darkness could buck the pricey ticket trend by embracing budget touring. The Darkness: Back to Basics, Forward to the Future Tour of smaller UK venues could reach as many fans as a stadium tour, but at significantly less cost. Unique merchandising could boost it all up, and crowdfunding would let the fans decide just how miles there are on the road trip.

All of the expenses that you mention have always been part of the cost of touring. Granted, the expense of today’s stage technology is significantly higher than “The Song Remains the Same” days. In the 80’s, I saw all of the biggest acts and never spent over $20 for a ticket. I get that touring used to be the marketing vehicle for record sales where money was allegedly being made. The problem now is the great inequity of labor… with the prices that some people must pay (many of my coworkers are happy paying $1k for a ticket), I have to work an entire week to enjoy 2 hours of entertainment. And then there’s the new $80 parking fee gouge, $18 beer and $50 t-shirt. Maybe I’m old and crabby, but the prospect of dropping all of this cash on something so ephemeral makes me go… “meh.”

I did get a £160 ticket (ouch) but listening to what the guy sat next me said, he'd paid the full £320 Scorpions this year was £121, but the seat in front of mine was £334 (they called it "Platinum" but it's dynamic pricing) Nerina Pallot at The Palladium was £46, but 3 rows in front of me "Platinum" £175 (to be fair to Nerina she told fans to buy direct from the venue when she heard what Ticketmaster were charging) Def Leppard & Motley Crew - one of the top grossing tours in 2022 ($173 million from 35 shows) To get a good seat you had to go Platinum/VIP and for Def Leppard the front few rows were £1719 - you got to have your picture taken with the band Motley Crew VIP was £419 - you just got a mediocre seat & a merch voucher for that, no photo opp. I didn't get tickets for that tour. Shame really, as Def Leppard were a favourite growing up, now I just think of them as greedy assholes What does all this mean to music fans? That's basically why I've been mainly hitting up festivals or local and smaller venue shows. I mean, most festivals, you pay the same amount that some of these stadium/ arena shows are charging for a one evening, 2 or 3 band performance, but getting multiday and 100's of bands in some cases.

Imagine the irony of being pissed off about ticket prices because 20 years ago we all collectively decided that paying $20 for an artists new album on CD was far too much and we all collectively decided to steal music instead and now pay $15 a month for all the music on the planet (99.9% of which you wont listen to) . The only good thing about the 'music industry' now is that artists can now have a career without a record deal, can record their own music, release their own music and own their own music (master recording, publishing rights etc). It seems the major labels are still the ones trying to fleece the consumer (and artists still) with these insane ticket prices. I've not heard of independent artists doing this. Also, the sooner Live Nation and Ticket Master mafia are broken up and artists/management/promoters can once again start negotiating directly with venues the better.

Absolutely spot on. I used to buy at least 2 albums a week before streaming was a thing. Even though it’s now been around years, it still feels like I’m doing something illegal, to have unlimited access to pretty much every track that exists, for less than the cost I used to pay for one record. I do still buy the physical copies of my fave artists, but not to actually play, just to support them. I’m also fortunate that I can afford to go to gigs, but a lot of people are priced out of live music, and it’s such a shame.

Good post. I just googled "how many songs are uploaded to spotify every day". The answer = 100,000 ... Yes, that is not a typo. A hundred thousand new songs every single day. It is therefore safe to say it's 99.99999999999% of songs on Spotify that you'll never hear. The art is to find the diamonds buried under all that mud. I don't have time for that. All my albums (in tape, vinyl and CD formats) and my hi-fi still keep me happy.

I think what puts it into perspective is Rammstein's recent tour. That was one massive production to take all round Europe, required days to build, and existed in duplicate. Ticket prices were around £100-150, and there is no way any of these big name pop stars have a show that labour intensive, so no excuse for charging so much more

I'm suprised you haven't covered Chappel Roan yet Justin. Not only has Sabrina Carpenter raved about her and done a laid back Countryish cover of her viral hit Good Luck Babe, but the song itself, which isn't on her debut album, has a falsetto you'd enjoy and despite there not being a video, there is live performance on Jimmy Fallon's show that has a strong theatrical element you'd appreciate. You can get that from her other drag influenced/fempop performances, like the Tiny Desk Concert or her other music videos. The songwriting, production, personality, her being celebratorly queer and that she mixes glitzy made up to nines, with social media videos of her unmade up and natural, has all helped make her a sure fire hit arty pop star.

What i have experienced is that the original price for a ticket is called "standard ticket". People or companies purchase many tickets then sell them back to ticketmaster or wherever. Then they become "ultimate" or some other new description. There was a time when artists would tell fans when purchasing music, only pay x dolars. This needs to be done again but with tickets

I think what gets everyone's goat is the price rising through the sale period. Surely with the application of some mathematics bands can work out - How much will putting on the show cost us ? How much do we want to make? How many tickets and at what price do we need to sell them to make that profit. Mainly let the punters know "this will be the top price for the tickets but if you buy them early you can get x discount (allowing that the average sale price must bring the profit you need from the show". Yes oversimplified a bit / lot but that's the essence, Oh and resale siites - well.

I covered one of her songs live, called 'Thumbs'. At the time I didn't know anything about her, I just liked the song. I think things changed after she opened for Taylor Swift on parts of her tour. Frankly, if an artist has what it takes to perform at a small club, it's not only more personal but cheaper. Point being, aside from the obvious visual aspect, what would Ms. Carpenter bring to a club gig?

Surely when someone goes on tour, the ticket prices set per venue *prior* to any "dynamic pricing" includes all the costs - the setup, the visiting the location, the stage, handlers, catering, everything... *and* a modest/decent/fabulous profit (delete for most appropriate). Surely artists aren't organising a tour and going "well, lets set the price so low we lose money and reply on peak demand to generate a profit". Or are they? Next up, Tesco to include dynamic pricing based on how busy the store is. Or MacDonalds. Or the Electricity company... oh wait. Economy 7. Wait, no, they scrapped it. Should say, saw Rammstein for 120, fire zone, epic stage show obviously - incredible, worth every penny and more. So if people have a thrilling time, its up to you to decide if it's value at whatever price you pay :)

One of the biggest drivers for ticket prices is Spotify. Musical artists used to make money from album sales. Today, it’s from concert tickets and merch. The cost of tickets has risen faster than the rate of inflation. It’s also many why bands are seemingly touring non stop. Yes, dynamic pricing has added an additional factor here too.

When I was a teenager, living on Merseyside going to a concert in Liverpool to see Adam and the Ants, OMD, Joy Division, Buzzcocks ,The Damned , Tears for Fears Motorhead...etc or going to watch LFC was just something you did.It never cost more than a fiver and the whole night never more than a tenner and either i was able to save up to go or i could cadge some extra money from my parents or promise to do some menial job. Whatever, it was always doable, without too much sacrifice. I guess the real expense was in buying records with concerts subsided. Whereas today you can listen to music ,play videos on your favourite band or sports team on demand for free. Consequently today I would never pay to go to a concert but watch or listen for free instead on KZitem. However, now I look back and wish instead of buying records I had gone to more concerts instead.

You hit the nail squarely on the head when you discussed the cost of providing such a spectacle. However, I'm pretty sure there is also an element of greed on the part of promoters. For me, the scale of the spectacle detracts from the music, (even rock music,) so I don't go to those sort of gigs. The biggest I would contemplate is a traditional 1500 seat hall or theatre, (and the last one of those I went to was the Bonzos 40th anniversary tour.) Of couse the phenomenon is not new. Joe Cocker scaled back his touring machine in the '70s after a world tour, (circa 1973 I think,) which required two Boeing 747s: one for equipment and one for personnel. Apparently, he looked down the length of the cabin and asked, "What do all these people do?" :D

I agree with the sentiment that exorbitant prices should not be paid for an artist with 1 or 2 hits. Maybe wait to see that person at a festival to get your moneys worth. I saw Creed and 3 Doors Down Friday night in VA, and literally it was 3 hours straight of hit songs. We had pretty good seats for $120 USD, and Lawn tickets were $40. Friggin bargain!

Great show at Latitude last Sunday , wish you lot were headlining ! . Ticket sales have been escalating for some time , its supply and demand and to some extent I don't see a problem with it .Bands now realise that to make big money they need to perform live more often, that can only be a good thing no ?. We live in a streaming world that didn't exist when I was a kid , if you wanted a CD it cost nearly £15 in Andy's records or you borrowed your mates and made a dodgy tape copy. Incidentally I only used to earn about £35 a week when I was 17 . I wouldn't trade that for a second . The freedom and flexibility we have now is incredible. In my opinion we must accept the trade off. Trust me , some people don't know how lucky they are. Apart from a few exceptions you can listen to virtually any album or artist instantly , often for free.

In February 1974, I saw Uriah Heep, Rory Gallagher and Manfred Mann at the san Diego Sports Arena and ticket prices were $6:00 (US) day of the show and $5:25 in advance, according to a concert poster found on the Internet. Also according to the Internet, the Chevy Camaro sold new in 1974 from $2,827.00 for the six cylinder to $3, 380.00 (US) for the Camaro LT Luxury Coup. Also from the Worldly Pipe, $6 in 1974 is worth $38.24 in 2024. I have no idea how accurate these figures are other than what the 1974 ticket prices were but these are some numbers to crunch. Personally, I'm all for the artist and their crew making a very good living plus the venue making a fair profit.

If they find enough people to pay the amount, it'll continue that way. Once people start staying away, the prices will come down, since it's just so much fun to have packed rooms with people who're enjoying the music instead of thinking about how much it cost.

Another person that capped their ticket prices is Garth Brooks. Front Row and Back row are the exact same prices when he toured the last two years. I've been going to concerts since I was 10. I am now 44. I get supply and demand, as well as the cost to get on the road. What is hard to swallow for those of us that love the live experience are the legacy bands, the bands we grew up with, we are now priced out of seeing them perhaps that "one last time" because of this type of pricing. It's very disheartening. I want to support the artists I love, I just have a hard time paying over $100 for nose bleeds. Will it ever get fixed? Probably not. Not with the cost of touring. I do agree with many of you who have mentioned dynamic pricing in other aspects of life, if it was such, there would be an uprising.

Sounds like the same sort of practice as tipping. Guaranteed to spoil your evening. Just set the price and stick to it.

I think it makes sense that there should be astronomical prices if the venue is an expensive venue to maintain and is located in an affluent area. That being said, to me, it just makes sense to also have a much trashier venue booked somewhere very nearby within the next few days after such a big event. Perhaps out in a freshly harvested barley field somewhere on a soundstage quickly erected high above the plebeians to keep their body fluids out of splashing distance or something. The big event at the expensive venue can then be looked at as an early access event of higher quality, a luxury event, which justifies the price and just makes sense without being unfair to the normal people. It also makes sense from a moneymaking standpoint, as choosing one or the other and not doing both is just leaving money on the table, which is always a bad business practice when it can be avoided. Thank you for your time and consideration.
