When I was first starting to buy nail products online, around 2014-2015, I used a lot of Cristine's codes (use code simply or simply10 for 10% off). I had no idea they were codes. She never disclosed that she made a commission off the code. It's different than an affiliate link. I didn't know that people made money off codes until Nicol Concilio said "you get a lil something, I get a lil something." That's never really sat well with me. Sure, I was saving money, but I was also was unknowingly supporting another person. I think that if you have an affiliate link or a code, specifically that you mention in an unsponsored video, you still need to disclose that you make money from the code. I don't think Cristine has ever said that she makes money from her codes.

@@juliepenn4327, Cristine actually addressed this in the podcast. She said that in the beginning of partnering with companies (perhaps around 2014-2015 like you stated), she sometimes did not specifically say "affiliate codes" in every video but disclosed this information in the description box. Moreover, over the years she has learned to become better at disclosing this information; and because laws have clarified what influencers have to disclose.

I've actually worked in marketing and advertising for years and the fees KZitemrs charge don't surprise me. If I look at the way we manage ads, if we didn't use a KZitemr and instead make our own campaigns, we need to pay an Art Director, an agency, the agency will typically charge $100 to upwards of $500 an hour for labour, plus we need to pay for the actual ad spot, whether it's in a magazine, TV etc. Plus if we want to hire our own models for photoshoots and hire a videographer etc. The campaign can end up being $100k to $500k. So the fact that I can pay a KZitemr a set amount to take care of everything and basically guarantee me engagement? With the right partnership I think it's 100% worth it

Alhemičarka I’ve seen other YT channels discuss this, and I think that the placement of ad breaks, length of them, and whether they can be skipped are all determined by the channels themselves. In my viewing experience, most ads longer than 10 seconds can be skipped unless the channel decided to disable that feature on that specific ad break in the vid.
@Llwellyn
4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what KZitemrs get, but from an advertiser's POV (my info is like 2 years outdated tho lol), there are a two types of video ads that you can put on the platform. 1) Non-skippable Advertisers pay for impressions (i.e. the number of views it gets) 2) Skippable Advertisers pay if any of these criterias are fulfilled: - the ad is played for more than 30 seconds (or till the end of the ad if it's shorter than 30 seconds) - if a user clicks on a call-to-action (could be downloading an app, clicking the button to visit the website at the end of the video, click on a banner next to the video etc). Oh yeah and like specialj67 said, the YT creator can decide: - what kind of ads they want (skippable, non-skippable, banners at the side of the video, etc) - where they want to place the ad breaks

You guys have the best takes. I definitely grew up feeling misdirected anger about the over-valuing of pro football and basketball players, then the Kardashians, and now more generally influencers (esp. family vloggers) with how much they are paid in comparison to their contribution to society, but Ben's point that we should be more angry that teachers and others whose work is invaluable are not compensated more.

It's rather complex though. If athletes or actors do not get paid, the team owner/studio does. The money isn't going to go to other workers in the business. With teachers they get paid from tax revenues and there are a lot of issues within that.
@vivijd14

recoil53 The sport industry makes sommuch money from outsourcing the workers and selling all the cheap merchandise at huge costs to the fans. They also rely on the sense of pride of citizens and their city to gain trust and make everyone feel they « have » to support their team. I really think the first thing to do to balance things are to produce all the merch in the country and therefore bringing tons of employment as well as reducing the price of the events (basketball is soooo expensive to watch live!). Then, as the profits get closer to something more resonnable, the over-valuing of few athletes and managers etc, will lessen. I hate that they rely on patriotism yet everything is made in China!! Such a great opportunity to create jobs! And because all the items are already overpriced, they would not even need to change the cost for the consumer hahahha!

The question about “why do you accept money if this is your passion?” Is so frustrating. KZitem videos make money. For KZitem and for companies. If people are going to profit off a KZitem video, the creator should DEFINITELY get a cut. This is also why six figure sponsored videos are fair. That company is going to make MILLIONS from ONE sponsored video. It would not be fair for a creator to make a few thousands when they are creating millions in profit for someone else.

When I was in seventh grade, I decided that I wanted to be a science teacher. I've always loved it excelled at it but particularly that year everything in the world just started making sense to me more in science and I wanted to give back to others what I was getting. Then I had my bubble burst my first year of college when they were like well if you want to be a teacher, you're only going to make like $25,000 (this was a while back) starting out and you might not even get to teach science, and you don't get to pick the grade that you want. I understand that picking the grade but thinking that I might get a degree in secondary Science Education and have to end up teaching math or history really bums me out. So I switched to business and got my MBA because I knew that I could excel in that and had a much better chance of getting a more profitable job. So I literally gave up my dream because I knew that I needed to be able to support and secure my future stability. It's really sad though that is someone who definitely has the ability to teach and the drive to inspire others and it might empower them, I knew I just wouldn't be able to live a comfortable life.

SO.... this was extra interesting to me because I worked as an Affiliate Program Manager for 10 years before moving into working in Influencer Marketing on the advertiser side a few years ago. You guys pretty much got everything correct about affiliate commissions, influencer sponsorship and brand partnerships. I also love that, as affiliates, you understand the attribution challenges that coupon-focused sites like Honey face for the advertisers. More affiliate programs are having to adjust their attribution because of these challenges and split commissions. A few points I'd like to clarify about the influencer thing though & agencies. Also, one thing to note on the agency aspect is that a lot of agencies are being paid commission too... so it's actually in their best interest to paying the creators/influencers MORE to get a higher commission from the brand, but brand goals limit that. A tip for creators/influencers. It's important for creators to understand that different brands have different goals. For example, some brands are trying to raise brand awareness and can pay higher rates based on reach, engagement, etc. and some brands are interested in just sales and have to pay less (which is where the affiliate model can be lucrative). That highly affects the rates they can pay a creator, so knowing the industry standard is good but also being flexible to what the brand's goals are will go a long way for brands/agencies to WANT to work with you. Especially when working with agencies, we work with a lot of creators for a lot of brands so having a friendly business relationship on one brand deal goes a long way to lead to other brand deals. This was a very good primer for anyone interested.

I think another reason why celebrities get less hate for endorsements and brand deals is because they're much more far removed from their audiences. Watching an actor/actress in a movie is very different from kicking back with some tea and "hanging out" with your favorite youtubers. So when celebrities are being paid to sell things, it's almost like that's what half of their purpose as a celebrity is. But when a KZitemr does it, it can feel like a betrayal, like, "You're my friend, how could you do this to me? IS WHAT WE HAD EVEN REAL?!" Once again, great episode with lots of fodder for thought. Thank you!!!!

Cristine's response to accepting making money through a hobby that she didn't start to make money off of is spot on. Look at most small businesses like a bakery or an artisanal style shop, most of those start as a hobby that branches into a business. Most people celebrate these types of business owners and we should be doing the same for online creators.

I don't think you guys should underestimate the value of your particular contributions to the internet. Your crime statistics jobs are valuable in a more tangible way, but in the virtual world where millions of people are constantly pumping harmful misinformation and ideals on the internet, someone with a big platform combating that is incredibly valuable. The ideals you teach like the importance of education, personal integrity and honestly is life changing for some people. You regularly reinforce the idea to your fans a message of positivity and accepting themselves and others whilst also showing some of your vulnerabilities and that you are human. I know it sounds stupid but these are things that help people get through life, and for certain people can actually be life saving when they are really struggling with their mental health and self image.

I agree it is insane that people can make SO MUCH money on KZitem while nurses, teachers, etc go underappreciated... but the money that KZitemrs make is not coming from the same source that pays our nurses and teachers. They're unrelated. A brand has a marketing budget that they're going to spend on marketing. People don't get mad when they spend that budget on a TV commercial or a billboard or other traditional forms of advertising, so why do people get upset when it goes to the creators that they tune into every week?
@shannonsherk50

It's more a commentary on society. That we as a culture can accept that influencers can be paid way more than healthcare workers or teachers. Yes, the money dosent come from the same place, but we have evolved as a society to a point where this level of discrepancy is a problem that is considered acceptable and *that* is the issue
@Jazminzesati

Probably because no one really care about marketing until sponsorships came. But I support the fact that the anger should go towards the government or whoever pays teachers, nurses, etc... is unrelated and youtubers shouldn’t get the anger.

When I placed my initial Oats Overnight order my Honey app immediately put in the Simply code. I guess this is what you're referring to in that segment? I didn't think about it until watching this but it is unfair to the companies giving out this code because a bot is able to seek it out and give it to anyone. That being said, use code Simply on the Oats Overnight and get the Chai latte flavor. It's delicious. (not sponsored)

You could say that a performer's work is also important. I used to be in a relationship where the parents of my other half just didn't get that I had value in what I did and I had to "justify" myself to them on a basic level EVERY. DAY. At 8.40, Ben thankfully says that we shouldn't be mad that the people who are on lower income streams aren't necessarily doing anything of less worth. Money makes these things rather toxic.

I honestly have appreciated so much of what you've produced and consider the following reasons for giving you that appreciation: 1) When I've been crazy stressed and not able to sleep, and looked for fun calming things to watch during the small dark hours, your videos have really helped (along with spot/cyst popping vids) 2) As someone who's trained to evaluate source information I see you as a (obviously as far as a human can be) reliable resource, because you make your own sources clear, you declare any influence and you discuss many topics which appear unrelated and hard-to-monetise for you. 3)I just like the cut of your jib (you are a geek who loves cats, and I personally love a spreadsheet) 4) I think you're genuinely good at what you do artistically.

I really love listening to you guys talk about the business of youtube especially how it's changed. Being slightly older than the typical viewer age and someone who remembers the internet before KZitem i feel like this topic is kind of underrated. It's a huge industry now compared to the days when it was unthinkable that anyone on KZitem might be making more than pocket change. So many youtubers built their platform off being a genuine human being and doing a lot of work with no fair compensation for that work and it's really cool and fascinating to watch that evolve into the current landscape of youtubers having their channel be a business instead of a journal or documentary of a hobby. This topic is so huge and I feel like I could talk about it forever

I appreciate you both talking about this so directly. When people I watch/follow are upfront about sponsorships and affiliations I see so many more, "Go, get that money!" comments on videos. It's when people seem like they're trying to hide sponsorships (whether or not that's their intention) or are promoting things that they clearly don't like or aren't high quality that I get a gross feeling about it.

(forgive the text wall...) I think there's the fact that the accessibility of the youtuber themselves plays a huge part of audiences feelings on youtubers and taking on sponsorships. Most create videos with the pretense that THEY are the person behind the videos/account builds up that para-social relationship that YOU are actually connecting with the creator when you comment. And this is usually true! What happens, I think, is when they don't make the upgrades obvious to the viewers. Like hiring makeup artists, cameramen, producers, or any other staff they may want or need to help them out and it's instead sort of "discovered" by the audience outside of the youtuber themselves. They're suddenly perceived as an actor and not a "regular" person like they were coming across as before. I'm glad people are coming out and showing how much work is actually involved in making videos of such quality, because I think this is a shock to a lot of people who don't realize the work and labor needed for a lot of these higher quality videos. I think the evolution of youtube becoming a feasible way for people to make money and how fast that happened really warped (for lack of a better word) how people treat the youtubers that would eventually become these "influencers". KZitem sort of ... unintentionally sets itself up to be this "If it's just you and a camera you can do it!" and that's how so many of these people started. I don't see many youtubers I watch shout-out there camera-man or their producers or the staff they've eventually hired to up the visual quality of their videos very often. It's great when they do! But when the audience discovers that there's more behind the scenes rather than the youtuber disclosing it it unfortunately sets things up as that once relatable and honest youtuber as another actor. I've seen examples of youtubers who hire staff to help support their vision, and shout out their work, and it's great! Anna Akana is a pretty good example of this. Her videos are still her, she just knows as a video producer how to make good quality things, and knows you need a team to achieve this. I want there to be more and more transparency in just how much actual work is involved in these videos, so that the audience can understand and grow, too. I'm glad this seems to be the direction a lot of youtubers are going in.
@cheesy4swiss

Thank you for this! Because you came from this from an influencer perspective, I wanted to share something from a brand/advertising perspective that may put the money part into perspective (or maybe not lol). When companies advertise in newspapers with big circulation, you can easily be paying anywhere between 25k-100k+ for ONE full page ad in a good spot of the newspaper. The bigger the circulation, the higher the price. When brands pay for premium spots for TV advertising, they are easily paying thousands of dollars (sometimes millions) for those spots. And that is linked to audience size and frequency - and many shows are pulling a few million views (assuming the content and audience of that programming matches the brand's target audience). This is big money for the HOPE of increased brand awareness. When an influencer has millions of views on their content, a dedicated (and engaged audience) and already has a good relationship with the brand, that's so much more effective than any other medium if the audience is a good fit for them. They aren't paying for the worth/talent of the creator, they are paying for their reach, engagement and ultimately a projected ROI based on it. So it really pisses me off when brands try to take advantage of smaller creators because THEY know that value better than the creator themselves, know what they are paying media for the same reach and still try to treat it as a PR initiative vs. a hard advertising cost. Because the advantage of working with an online creator is also a direct call to action, link and a way of measuring success in a way other expensive media don't allow. So the price should be high for them. What I personally appreciate about Cristine is transparency and her selection process. I'll be honest and say that I think too many KZitemrs use the advertising power of their channels TOO much and lose the pureness of their content. And I think there needs to be a balance, especially with larger KZitemrs who aren't financially dependent on these deals, to ensure their channel is trustworthy, transparent and a safe space as many have very young and impressionable viewers. So yes, brands should pay the premium based on the hard data (similar to other media), but I hate the idea that some creators take advantage of that to a point where they can be hurting their audience. Hope that rambling made sense. Thank you again for being so open about this. As someone who works in the marketing world, it was really interesting to listen to this side of the relationship.

It’s really useful to hear how affiliate vs sponsorship deals work. I didn’t know precisely how you tubers were compensated for these and it’s really useful to remember that a company that paid x amount for an ad likely profited enormously from it.
