As a life long boater, you guys are absolutely spot on with your assessment. In my opinion, only two kinds of people should own a boat, someone with an open checkbook, or someone who isn't afraid to get to work, and push beyond your comfort zone when necessary. I'm the latter and find it much more rewarding and fulfilling. Great work and a great experience. The knowledge gained in every project is impossible to put a dollar figure on, because it might be 30 years before you lean on that skill again.

I’ve had a 1980 Marine Trader 41 for 15 years. I’ve done upgrades and maintenance. Nothing is harder then boat work. The physical nature of it, the crazy cost for materials and the basic fixed costs of moorage. Also, boats deteriorate. The sun and rain do incredible damage overtime. Underneath things grow and eat your boat. And don’t forget the animals, seagulls shit on your boat, otters have meals and shit on your boats and low life’s and crooks break into your boat and expensive tradesman make mistakes. I’ve seen it all. So congratulations, keep living the dream while your young and have your health.

So much obfuscation and bias in this breakdown! How much did YT pay you? How much was a write off? Are you worth $378k in labor (in under a year)? My God, so many unanswered questions. A better video would have been your finances on day one and your finances at the sale. Your camera equipment and editor (who sucks at jump cuts) is worth more than the profit you initially claimed. This is CLEARLY NOT about the boat, but you two running a business. BE HONEST.

QUESTION: (maybe someone already asked): What about the cost of your housing expense/rent paid - or saved - for the duration of the project. Did you eat/sleep/live on the boat? I count also on the positive side of the ledger the cost/value of taking those cruise adventures compared with if you had to pay others for all of that travel. Whoever you sold her to probably got a steal! How did you decide on an asking price? I suppose there weren't many comparable sales you could use as a guide line. Too bad there isn't a "Kelly Blue Book" of sorts for boats. You probably could have gotten a lot more for her if you'd hired a surveyor and asked them what they thought you could sell it for and gotten that in writing in a report form - especially given Billy's past experience working on boats and engines etc.

I did a similar thing at the age of 72. I bought a 27 ft. cruiser in S. Carolina on Ebay from my desk in the UK. Flew out, cleaned her up ($1.70 lavatory bowl cleaner works well) put 3 weeks work into making her seaworthy then headed for New Orleans. Next year sold her at a price that covered my travelling costs (but not my labour) so basically a paid for holiday in wonderful America. It can be done in the US but I'm not too sure the same thing can be done in Europe.
