Ryan, thanks for answering my question!! I’ve been a huge fan of the channel for awhile and think you make great content. My wife and I actually moving to Hawaii and you are my big inspiration to get into spearfishing. Have you thought of making a cook book or recipe pdf or something? I love the catch and cook videos you have made and want to try to the recipes.

I watched that Dan Mann / Giacomo vid. Giacomo is impressive. His experience and calm is amazing. The one thing I did notice is during his ascents, he is coming up VERY FAST. Likely due to his air in lungs not compressing during those variable weight descents. He's a stud. A lot of experience. I'll let the experts do what they do. I'll default to the accepted safe way to dive, freedive course, dive buddy, and take my turn. Thanks Ryan.

So helpful! I bet wind and water depths/ (how quickly it can drop off) effects current big time in Hawaii.

Awesome! I didn't consider how my legs sink anyway when weighted, and if I was unconscious, even with a clear snorkel, I would most likely tumble and fill it right back up anyway. I was just wondering if it would be a viable backup plan while buddy diving. I'm nowhere near (probably never) considering variable weight, as tempting as the idea seems. Your podcast format has a lot of value, I like it.

Thanks for the great vid. I'm a little confused. You said that most people who try the snorkel-in when ascending technique will just sink and breath in water. Earlier you'd said neutral buoyancy should be at 33ft, which seems to mean one floats at any depth shallower than that. Mind clarifying?

The reason to spit out your snorkel when you dive is because it acts as a funnel for water into your mouth if you black out. If You are neutrally buoyant at 33 on a dive that is with your lungs full of air. If they become full of water after a blackout it will decrease your buoyancy in which you might sink no matter what depth you are at.

I'm 167 pounds and I use 14 pounds in my weight belt on my 3MM wet suit being neutrally buoyant at the bottom.
