My Bloody Valentine’s Isn’t Anything was the beginning of something special: shoegaze and dream pop. But did you know about all the ghosts, fanzines, and cows involved in its completion? Let’s make our way down memory lane and shack up in rural Wales to see exactly how My Bloody Valentine reinvented rock music forever… in their sleep.
Just as legendary DJ and radio host John Peel has once said that someone was going to make a 12-part documentary on My Bloody Valentine. Well, I would like to make the meme come into reality. This is the first episode of a three-part deep dive into each and every one of MBV’s full-length releases. Today, we go back in time and explore the origins of the band solidified the seductive sound of shoegaze through a punky past, noisy rituals, haunted recording sessions… and lots of cows.
Check out part one, to discover how My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, now 30 years old still sounds timeless and the secrets of its infamously expensive recording. And in part three, we’ll finally piece the present back together and celebrate the band’s epic return in 2012 with m b v.

STORY DISCLAIMER:
This video essay was constructed using a series of interviews and quotes, courtesy of Kevin Shields, Bilinda Butcher, Debbie Googe, Colm O’Ciosoig, and others. All claims made in this video have been supported by evidence, which you can access using the research link to the public database below. There is also a good degree of personal interpretation of the musical output, which we are happy to open up to discussion down below! There is obviously a lot more of information on Loveless and My Bloody Valentine available on the internet, and we hope to be able to make feature length video with input from the band one day (could you imagine?), but in the mean time, this will do.

MUSIC DISCLAIMER:
Due to copyright protection, the use of My Bloody Valentine’s studio recordings has been limited in this video. We thought we’d take the opportunity to spotlight some interesting worthwhile covers and mood music that would convey the atmosphere of the story and the band’s earlier work and Peel sessions-which they are notoriously not so fond of. Links to the featured music are down below.
