I used to try a lot of methods like this, but realized that even when I do stuff like this my brain was struggling to stay focused. Even if I didn't check my phone, I wouldn't be actively thinking about my task. It would take 80% of my energy and time to shape my environment and minimize distractions just to get 5% of my tasks done well. Finally I brought this up with my parents and was seen by a doctor, who put me on Strattera for ADHD inattentive. Although not dramatic, I've noticed a much improved concentration, being able to complete full lists of tasks every day WITHOUT all these organization tools or tracking methods.

Writing down distracting tasks that pop into my head has been HUGE for me. I sometimes used those tasks as an excuse to procrastinate... But MOST of the time they would just stay in the back of my mind, as something I "can't forget to do." I eventually had so many little "to do's" whirling around in my head that I couldn't focus on ANYTHING. I had such bad brain fog. Now, when I write things down it allows me to let go of that thought and focus on my work. Even better, I'm transferring all of those little tasks into my daily diary and for once I'm actually getting them done!
@sourcherrypie

while you're at it, you can also write down what you're really feeling and thinking about in the moment of fidgeting. I did it the last time I was overwhelmed by a deadline and it helped me go through it. although the subjects were quite big and ~ dramatic ~ merely acknowledging and writing them down (not deep diving into them) helped a lot.
@charlottemclean6130

Some fidgets can actually help you stay on task, when your brain needs to do some thinking in the background. When I was writing essays I often found the urge to ‘fidget’ and distract myself came when I couldn’t quite put my thoughts in order yet. It was uncomfortable so I wanted to distract myself but I actually needed to space out slightly while still thinking about the thing I was trying to write about in a diffuse way. I found playing Tetris on my mini keychain Tetris game worked super well for this, it kept my mind just occupied enough that I wouldn’t be super uncomfortable and reach for KZitem or something else that would fully absorb me and make me stop thinking about my essay, but it also was easy to put down when I did think of what I wanted to say (and of course it wasn’t a phone with a million other distractions just ready to go). It also helps me regulate my anxiety because I drop into a mild flow state while playing it very easily, but not so much that I get absorbed or find it difficult to put down. There is research that doodling similarly helps people to stay on task when they need a little distraction but not something that will absorb their attention.

I find this to be one of the more relatable and helpful videos in the series. I'm also glad other people are mentioning this but if you find yourself constantly needing a distraction, fidgeting, and focusing a bit better when you receive a stimulus you might be on the spectrum for ADHD. May or may not need assistance but it helped me understand why I worked better with music in the background or physical sensory helped me calm/focus.

Watched this video this morning and decided to try it out! It's been the most effective tool I have used so far to stay on track, and I've used many. Both the five minute break every hour and the writing a tally whenever I get distracted really helps, whenever I look out the window I almost immediately catch myself, put a tally in and get back to work, and it's surprising how effective that has been. Only 4 hours in and I already feel like I'm retraining my brain! Writing this in my 5 minute break :) thank you for this video!!

Oh, this is such a good idea, and I am absolutely going to do this when my next semester starts. Since I've gone back to grad school this past year, after finishing college more than a few years ago, I struggled to actually get my work done. I'm only part time, so I assumed it was because I spend all day at work and can't devote my entire life to school like I did as an undergrad and I'd forgotten how to be a student. But looking back, I've realized I wasn't actually an efficient worker back then, and I've been trying to find a better way to focus (usually, this means staying in my office late to work on homework because it's quiet and I don't want to be there so it motivates me to work faster). But I love this idea to actively track what I'm distracted by, and hopefully work around it.

This is exactly, exactly what I’m going through. Realising I never built the discipline in the first place. Tech has also degraded a formerly long attention span. This is the best tip I’ve hard for distractions in a long time. Stick with it!

sometimes when I use the pomodoro method I keep a piece of paper and a pen on my desk and put my phone in my bag. That way if during my 25-50 minute work block I think of something I write it down. And during my 5-10 min break I do all those things. Sometimes it’s as simple as “google this” or “ask mom for that” but that way you know exactly why you need to grab your phone and aren’t getting distracted by social media trying to remember what it was you wanted to do. I like the idea of a journal though bc you can track your productivity instead of just recycling the paper each day. Thanks for the video!
