This was just awful to watch, and I can feel your anguish ,having had my bird flipped over in its grass tie down spot in March of 2008, right after an engine overhaul, new interior, and new exterior paint job. Totalled. I had owned it since 1982 ! And semi-similar to now, economy wise, even with the full insurance check, with the 2008 used planes market place , after a year of searching I had to find a replacement. I did, at a much higher cost than expected, but it was still not as " good " as the destroyed one. I still own the replacement aircraft today, 14 years later, but it has seen about 5x more required repair maintenance than the flipped over aircraft ever required. So go slow and carefully in a search for a replacement, even waiting for this ridiculous buyer's market to calm itself.
@RichWellner
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, similar story here. I bought 2TF in 2012 after the recession, but before aircraft prices had recovered. So I definitely agree on timing the market. Just hoping not to be walking for three years. :-(

@franktino6676
2 жыл бұрын
@@lehecker1 My loss was in 2008. Flipped over in its tiedown spot in certified 78 mph winds that came through straight line in a thunder front with nearby rotation certified by the NWS. It was a 1959 Cessna 150 straight tail that had just been painted with a totally new glass panel and interior installed and a newly overhauled Mattitick engine (40 hours on it ). I had originally purchased it for $4200 in 1982 with a then automotive rattle can spray paint job on it and 1000 SMOH on the field overhauled engine. Flew it for 26 years that way reaching 2600 SMOH on the engine until it started making metal. Invested over $42,000 into it between the engine overhaul, paint job, glass Garmin panel and new interior only to have it totaled a year later.

Palpable pain in your voice. :( Storms can be so terrible. 30 years ago I was working at an FBO in OK. A tornado struck the field about 400 yards to the north. I saw planes fly on tie down. Planes I had tied down (again, double checking) about 30 minutes before. I guess fortunately also we had placed new ropes out there a few weeks before. They came through ok. Awesome and terrifying. I wish you the best.

Know the feeling quite well as I lost an airplane similarly at SNF back in 2011 as a plane next to mine broke loose from its tiedown. Since then I have become super paranoid about tiedowns and carry my own motorcycle straps that I double up. I never use airport tiedown ropes.

Ouch...that hurts, sorry to hear that. Now, with that said. I used to sail and even before that, when I was a little kid I'd always visit airports to just go look at airplanes & one thing which has never (and today is no different is notice how the manner in which most airplanes are tied down is so atrocious.) Most tie down jobs remind me of an old western when they 'tie up' their horse in front of a saloon. Sorry to be harsh, but...as you've figured out, it matters.
