Interesting to note that the conductor looks very Dionysian in his role apart from the orchestra. He is hyper animated, moving violently and sweating throughout the performance. There is something very primal about the work of creation and the warlike triumph of order over chaos. The conductor then takes the applause and glory before the orchestra and indeed then invites audience to show their appreciation for the orchestra. There are vestiges of Dionysus in Apollo and of Apollo in Dionysus.

Creation is not the triumph of order over chaos, this is a fundamental mistake of the modern mind that is obsessed with systematizing. True creation, the generation of life and beauty is the synthesis of "order" & "chaos", the interweaving of the two in the same way that a circuit is the union of wires and electricity. It is the union of the masculine and feminine principles, structure and substance, essence and existence, in the same way that the child, in the physical and the divine sense, is the Union of both the mother and father. This is why many who consider themselves "traditional" have a very perverted and pathological view of gender relations and marriage - to be fair, brought on in large part by Abrahamism - in which they think it is about dominance and control when it's not. It is about leadership and harmony, it is not a tyranny. It is actually more than possible to have too much control too much restraint too much structure. In fact at the highest levels all of your control and structure is an illusion, and merely exists at the pleasure of chaos, as it lets you play your game. But, because it is enchanted by you, it will let you play for a long time. In this sense the chaos of an orchestra is not restrained but rather it is channeled (which is exactly what a good husband does with his wife's unpredictable but immensely powerful feminine energy). It is not for nothing that he is called the conductor, as both the conduit and leader. Shakti dances on Shiva.

Absolutely, I’m a classically trained musician and sound engineer that produces Regueton/Trap/Pop. This music standards are extremely high production wise, because of technology you have control of everything, how the bass hits the chest, how crispy the high frequency should be, how agressive the vocals presents themselves in the ear, etc. Every aspect of this is meticulously calculated to make the listener “feel” a kind of way, and because modern music emphasizes the physical aspects through rhythm and texture (actually contemporary classical music already focused this), producers are the conductors of this degenerate art, the apollonian inside the dyonisian, there is a yin and a yang in everything.

I am a composer and I love your work. An excellent video as always. One thing though: during the cultural peak of classical music, all soloists were expected to be able to improvise music extremely well- Bach and Beethoven were as famous for improvisation as they were for composition (Bach being able to improvise 6-part fugues on the fly, insanity like that). It was only in the 1800s with romanticism that music became almost all strictly notated. In fact, conductors as we know them today didn’t emerge until after Beethoven’s time. Before then the concert master (head violinist) would lead the orchestras, much in the same way a head of a jazz band would today.

The duality between Apollo and Dionysus is a reflection of the hemispheres of the brain. The path forward is to be found between the duality. As a musician you learn about major and minor. Take C Major and C minor another reflection of a duality or the methodology in becoming one. C Major and C minor becoming one. The pragmatic Truth that will lead you to maximize your life, reproduction, and your hierarchy. Just like marriage! The two become One. One man and One woman together in a contract to help each other integrate the two hemispheres of the brain in each other. This is what Carl Jung psychology is leading to, this is what Jordan Peterson is leading to, this is what Beethoven is leading to...... the Narrow path forward. It all goes back to Jesus and this is why there is no salvation except through Christ. To discern the truth that will transcend your consciousness, that will transcend your spirit to heaven and connect with the God.

Yes!! So great that you brought this up!! The way classical music is performed today is more like the listeners go to a museum, where back at its peak it was a lot more like they went to something in between theatre and a jazz concert. So it was somewhat different. Here it is also relevant to add that opera in Italy when it was concieve was a lot like a mixture of live netflix, "tasteful jazz today" and a winebar.

I’m sorry, but there are two things that were simultaneous and therefore connected unnecessarily. The fact that the European and western tradition of classical music created those bias of “civilised” and “good Apollonian behaviour” is killing the opportunity to feel it as savage, rhythmical and visceral as it actually can be. We are partying with what is considered “classical music” by most people in places like Amsterdam. As a classical musician myself, I see all of this about the romantization of it. You don’t need to read to do that sofisticated music, you embody it more without reading. Also, it goes to all the possible sides of human emotions, even the most lowest aspects. With the introduction of electronics in music in the XX century we are going further and people like you are feeding these bias that we don’t need and they just help maintain unnecessary barriers between types of music and what it’s expected from the listeners. Fuck that.

The music I like the most combines both of these elements, which I like to think of as "Bach vs Paganini". Equal effort put into both the behind the scenes holy planning and the primal expressive front-man. Give me that clash of values, let them play out their dialogue so I can determine a winner. So I can see the new ideas and the old. You're not quite right in saying that "you begin dionysian and end apollonian." That's just the two halves of the cycle and a person can live many cycles. It's probably more apt to end apollonian but to do so would require foresight into your own demise to get the timing right.

Alright Steph; First of all - welcome back (or MORE back) to the “regular” presentation format. I’ve only made it to 9:54 so far but a burning question/comment has been gestating to the point where I can’t NOT ask it - even if it might be answered in a little while; Is this difference you’ve been describing between the Apollonian and Dionysian music types part of the reason that Wagner took so much heat at the time he was composing? Was he pissing off the world that felt he was somehow “cheating” the Apollonian art of music composition because he found a way to literally physically fire up people with his music? I mean, in the late 1800’s, society was still nowhere near diving into a good mosh pit, but the music no doubt was designed to stir the “lower feelings”. To this day, listening to a powerful “bloody music” performance of the Ring cycle can still get a person’s blood flowing and heart quickening (admit it all of you, sometimes “Flight of the Valkyries” will get you hitting the steering wheel or the table…) I’m not talking about the hijacking of his work by the Nazis to stir up the masses and once entranced, they would then say, “Of course you’re worked up, now let us show you why you are and how to channel all this juice…” As I said, it is entirely possible that you’re going to address this very point later in the video, but I was so “stirred to raise my hand in class” that I felt I wouldn’t be living a proper Boyo moment if I didn’t interrupt the teacher. That’s it (for now) hitting play again… cheers! (PS: I love the new animation incorporated videos, and am eager to see where you’ll be taking them, but Lord, I missed these too. 10 minutes in. I came to a sort of realization that modern music represents an addictive culture and itself pulls people towards addictive impulses and desires, whereas classical music is kind of the opposite and will pull listeners away from impulses and addiction. I also saw a correlation between what you said about classical music being kind of a push away from the primal / bodily aspects of the world, and the germanic society around the world wars which was very refined, powerful, and most importantly, _disgust_ oriented. The germans seem to me to be a kind of epitome of this classical/higher world, and is also why they targeted the jews so visciously. Disgust, not fear or hate, is what caused the germans to turn on jews. I just wonder if there's a third, undiscovered or unrecognized kind of music which has the same power of modern and classical music and yet does not fall into the pitfalls of either

I see the Orphic mysteries in Dionysus being Dionysus was first named Zagreus and was eaten by the Titans them thinking they could obtain his power. Zeus turned the Titans into dust which made us humans with that ash. Zeus then impregnated his thigh with Zagreus recreating him into Dionysus. Dionysus always understood humans because they where made of him through the dust of the titans and our instincts are his actual body. I always saw Zagreus being the animal instinct while Dionysus being the instinct of the mind. While Apollo is the order of the mind. I think we are in an age of Zagreus who act as if they’re Apollonian. An age where it’s belief in order require the destruction of a human to be realized. I see the conductor as being Dionysian because the symphony is made up of him and he’s tapped into the titan ashes. I see order or Apollonian mind as being more of a necessity than a truth. While the Dionysian mind is the instinctive truth not of animal but of action with the Apollonian order in tact. Order alone is not enough to act and it requires a spark of will to bring forth it’s reality beyond it’s leash and that is a Dionysian. I am Dionysian. I will act on the order not simply maintain it’s proper gaze.

This seems like a better way to think about decadence rather than art. Especially the musical art's because it's not obvious where experimental music, sound design, and other types of music that is not "about thinking". By your definition of the Dionysian, I'd say that any art that is not about thinking would be Dionysian and that does not strictly include "autist rage music" like metal.

Jazzzzzz 🙂 In the context of the philosophical dichotomy between Dionysus and Apollo, jazz music can be seen as predominantly Dionysian. The Dionysian aspect, derived from the Greek god Dionysus, represents chaos, emotion, spontaneity, and the liberation of the senses. Jazz music, with its emphasis on improvisation, emotional expression, and spontaneous creativity, aligns well with these Dionysian characteristics. Jazz often breaks traditional boundaries, encouraging musicians to explore and innovate, much like the unpredictable and ecstatic nature of Dionysian art. On the other hand, Apollonian qualities, associated with the Greek god Apollo, emphasize order, harmony, structure, and rationality. While jazz does incorporate elements of structure and harmony, especially in its composed sections and complex musical forms, the overall spirit of jazz leans more towards the free-flowing, intuitive, and emotional experience that characterizes the Dionysian. Therefore, while there are Apollonian elements within jazz, the genre as a whole is more closely aligned with the Dionysian ideal due to its emphasis on improvisation, emotional expression, and creative freedom.

please read something about the germanic people. they were not dirty, running naked through the forest. Do you really think someone like that would give the romans trouble? they had long hair and beards and were proud of them so they took care of it. the term barbarian btw meant living outside of the roman civilization

Is it possible that Dionysus is coming back with a more accurate philosophy that is in tune to the organic essence of life?... Just wondering, my last name is Dinis. Do you believe in reincarnation?

Boyooooo ima have to slightly disagree with you on one thing lol - but I think you may understand what I mean and be open to it. The Apollonian intellectual/higher, civilized music to me seems to be metaphorically representative of the promethean(or Rudolf Stainers idea of the luciferian impulse towards intellectualism). I also totally agree that the heavy metal music is the Dionysian impulse (or to use another Steiner example, the Ahrimanic impulse towards being ruled by emotions.) However (and I’m commenting this about halfway through so you may get to this point and if you do I apologize), I believe there is a middle path here that certainly isn’t something I would say is prevalent today, but has been at times in the past. This middle path seems to be where we might find the symbolic “Christos” or divine co-creative aspect within ourselves as creators. And perhaps It has happened more rarely throughout history than I even first considered, but to me this seems to be where the culture needs to move, whether it be psychologically, artistically, morally, intellectually, emotionally etc. etc. Would love your thoughts on this my friend. Much love brother.

Which I sort of think at the end you actually did cover haha 😂 so my bad but still might be worth commenting on because perhaps it’s a slightly different path than just the Dionysian impulse working in the way of what the astroworld concert devolved into. But it does seem like you are sayin that the idea of the ubermensch is essentially very close to the symbolic Christos, or man rising from the insanity into transcendence/ a higher state of consciousness, after this fall.

The difference is what it stimulates. Dionysius music stimulates feelings and emotions with no thought. Just like how when you listen to rock or pop, you move with no thought, just dance. Appolian touches the higher parts of the brain. That is why such music like orchestra makes us feel calm and makes us feel sophisticated. This is my take.

What's really interesting is that Apollo hailed from Hyperborea and would use certain individuals as vessels; Abaris the Great being one of them. He travelled from Hyperborea to give Pythagoras an arrow as he acknowledged the Apollo in him, that is when Pythagoras had an effect on the world. What legends do not state is that Abaris was a Mongolian of the Far North Winds. He was a shaman that traveled in trance and gave these gifts to the Greeks. Through shamanic states they changed the world. Enter Nietzsche's Antichrist to save us, it begins: "We are HyperBoreans…" I believe he too found the old shamanic ways and kudos to him for traveling so far into the void and losing his self.

@@XanarchistBlogspot I believe he went into a different kind of madness, certainly not a shallow one. I feel there was a lack of support. @@XanarchistBlogspot I wonder what that implies. But anyways my point is that Nietzsche was a modern day Shaman like Jung, and I find him using Hyperborea to be no accident. He saw Moral Relativism and Post Modernism coming from 100 years away.

Metal was partly inspired by classical music. The riff of "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath was created when bassist Geezer Butler began playing a fragment of "Mars" from Gustav Holst's _The Planets_ suite. Rainbow's Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio took inspiration from Bach and Beethoven. Manowar's Joey DeMaio took inspiration from Wagner; that's why he used a choir in "The Crown and the Ring".

Haven't finished the video yet but if you wanted the perfect halfway between Dio and Apo then you need something with body moving groove but also intricate harmonies and band coordination. Off the top of my head only Disco/Funk (and reggae) fits this category. Not surprising this genre(s) peaked at the end of the counterculture era when the repressive conservative culture was transitioning to the expressive and consumerist modern culture.
