No touch martial arts exist as an extension of the mind expression. There are physics and balance points involved but it all comes down to influence and distraction. If you look at one of those videos the guy was believing he had an energetic skill and instead he was raising his arm toward the opponents eye which allowed him time to get away from the punch. I cannot say wether they actually exist from an energetic stand point but this guy in his science experiment video says it pretty well. Rokas, Did you read my comments from your last video? I stated the rhythmic patters combined with the power of suggestions/authority will allow for a minor form of hypnosis to occur between the student and teacher. Once one student is susceptible the others will follow along kind of like mass hysteria. It is not the martial arts but the minor form of hypnosis that allows it to work. I almost think you made this video after reading my prior comment from your other video but I could be wrong.

Flashy Paws I don't think I understand what you're talking about. My Kyoshi was taught by Hanshi Sid Rayford whos master was Sid Cambell who intern was taught by Grandmaster Shuguro Nakazato in Okinawa. Our art and teaching style is direct lineage to Okinawan standards. Practical application is always a standard that must be upheld at all times. After receiving my Blue Belt it was mandatory to learn how to defend oneself against the multiple aggressors. Also there is no set to how they were to attack. Okinawans believed in full contact after a certain point. We had to understand that after a certain point you had to be able to know how to take a hit. If you were surprised when getting hurt then you've already lost the conflict. After training with them for 9 years I had to move to a different city for work and miss my old Dojo very much. And if you're wondering I have my certification under WOSKKA as a Sensei after reaching my second degree black belt. Unfortunately it seems that the dialogue that you used is from somebody who either got soured by a McDojo or have very little exposure in traditional martial arts. If one of our teachers got hit during a sparring or teaching session it was on us. We wanted to empower our students with the most comprehensive training they could have for their own defensive capabilities or defending others. Take care and God bless.

Something else I've noticed is none of these no touch masters or their students appear to be in good shape. A martial artist should be an athlete but I see no evidence that any of these schools require physical conditioning as part of the curriculum. Part of the appeal of 'magic' is that it promises spectacular results with minimal effort. People who are drawn to that promise aren't going to be interested in running laps or doing push ups.

Great video. Love your channel. I have been following since the first MMA vs Aikido video, and I enjoy watching your journey from realistically and respectfully looking at martial arts. I believe the hypnosis theory can be tied in with cult behaviour, and other various psychological self defense mechanisms that protect their ego's from realizing they are wasting their money and time; multiply that effect by the amount of time they are sucked into it. I believe you touched on this in the conformity part. Believe it or not, there are no touch martial art schools that not only teach this no touch stuff, they also tell kids they don't need medication for things like ADHD if they learn confidence through Aikido and martial arts. Scary stuff. Keep up the great work.

It must have been so sad for that old man who believed that his no-touch techniques worked having spent many years practicing them only to get punched in the face when he faced someone who was not susceptible to his techniques. I have seen exactly the same sort of thing in the west with certain preachers and their congregations, falling to the floor because they believe they have been touched by God, it is all down to nothing more than susceptibility and no one is immune to it, Darren Brown's videos are absolutely fascinating when you see him employ similar things on people or shows you how easily people really are led. The trouble is mistaken beliefs can be so very dangerous, who would want to live in hope that an antagonist is susceptible to suggestion when their life could be on the line? I do not practice martial arts anymore but when I did I always tried to spar with people of different styles as much as possible, they tend to not be compliant to your styles techniques and not only that they may attack you in ways you are not used to or expecting. Good luck everyone with your journey.

I wouldn't say hypnotic susceptibilty, they usually just abuse the beginner mindset of new students. To elaborate, a student who just wants to learn something and doesn't know much about martial arts is very pliable, both physically and mentally. He/She will not resist at all, simply to learn. These phonies exploit this beautiful beginner mindset to further their own egos.

The "beginner mindset" is inherently related to hypnotic suggestibility. It's the willingness and desire to follow the person because of their position of authority. Hypnosis is reliant on you trusting and accepting what the hypnotist tells you. No touch techniques are reliant on the same things. You trust the person who stands in front of the class and is recognised and respected by their existing students. You accept what they say because they have a class of students "proving" that their technique is real. You expect it to work, because you see it working with the other students. So when it comes to your turn, you're conditioned in exactly the same way hypnotic conditioning works, to respond as you've been instructed through the previous demonstrations.

I have no training in martial arts but come from the hypnosis world and I clearly see what you mean. In the videos you showed there there is, I wouldn't even say hypnosis, in most of the case simple compliance. But I have a question for people who know martial arts. Systema or other Russian martial arts also have no-touch techniques, and it always puzzled me because, for my non-expert point of view, Systema seems like a valid art and his instructors appear to me everything but fake masters when talking about the "normal" contact part. Then they do non-contact and I raise my eyebrow, and yet some (not all) of the things they do seem reasonable to me (they seem distractions to make you lose your balance, for example) and different from the examples you showed here. Then a few days ago a hypnosis professional I know (who's perfectly aware of hypnosis, suggestion, compliance, verbal, non-verbal and so on, orf course) told me he received some non-contact stuff from a Systema trainer, it repeatedly worked, but he wasn't able to understand what it happened. What do you think about Systema? Is it possible its non-touch part works triggering some istinctive reactions, for example? Or can you give me some source? Thanks.

Hey Rokas! Another good vid, great depth as always. My question is, do you think that the aspect of humility is missing from martial arts as a form of self development? For example, a sensei making a mistake and admitting it without making an excuse? Or recognizing that challenging each other to sparring is just another way of improving, and not a "I'm the winner/loser" competition? Let me know what you think. ^_^
@MartialArtsJourney
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes, I definitely think the aspect of authentic humility is missing from many (although not all) schools of martial arts. Many people come to martial arts seeking power and once they attain in the form of authority or skill, they may abuse this power over others (which happens very often), unless it is directly addressed or constantly challenged. Some of these people also have only a "face" of humbleness, which is merely an act to hide their ego under. Yet if a person keeps himself in check all the time, admits his mistakes and challenges himself on all possible ways, martial arts used in this way may be a great tool for developing this authentic humility. Did you watch this video where I addressed it? kzitem.info/news/bejne/r4aIz6WXr3eKZYI

Of course dude, although it was more focused on your development as a leader/sensei position. I suppose I'm just thinking about how to incorporate instructor training and discipline. Schools, for example, train teachers on how to teach, either through seminars, or teacher training days. Some topics include how to teach students through action/reaction, self-example, internal motivation, etc. One of the ways I train Judo is with explaining how I used to be a beginner and how certain throws and exercises were very difficult for me. Or even how I got my butt kicked (thrown in this case) because I lacked the knowledge on grip positioning. How would you include humility in an actual class, let's say an introductory class with new students?

Another excellent discussion! (Disclaimer: I'm a professional hypnotist!) Rather than talk about hypnosis, which it is, it might be more practical to refer to it as "suggestion" since there isn't the "trance". But it is hypnotic. And it's actually a part of most martial arts already! If you've ever thrown a good feint, it can seem magical to your opponent and maybe you too. He believes he's going to get kicked, say, but the kick never arrives, somehow he gets a punch instead. That's suggestion. With these masters of Ki, they're relying on the way a school creates a kind of "subjective reality" (which is why some stuff that works great in class wont work anyplace else). Students have committed their time, money and bodies, they want to believe, and they don't know as much as the teacher, so they are open and trusting. That opens them up to suggestion. Not all of these Ki masters are deliberately fooling their students. If they learned that way, and its a part of the cultural beliefs, they might not see that they're giving suggestions. But if they use certain spectacles like "the mysterious unbending arm" which seem impossible but work miraculously, and are actually tricks, those are done to suspend the viewer's critical thinking. In hypnosis we call those "convincers." As for the way the word chi/ki are used traditionally, there are three different meanings I know of. The first is just "breath." The second is a vector of force. So you block a punch, you're "moving your opponent's chi". Nothing really mysterious there, either. The third is the force that runs through the meridians. Since this is alien to most of us, we are open to believing all kinds of things.

Good vid Rokas and nice insight, but regarding Shioda Gozo though, that one from what I understand from my senior and master in aikido, the reason why he was able to use efficient energy when performing technique is because of the position of his body alignment as well as weight distribution, this is something we also learn in taekwondo when in regards of your blocking as well as striking, when you follow the natural path of movement for your body when you are relax, you are stronger not because of magical qi but because of the power of gravity, which is achieved after you've relaxed your body and give in to the gravity instead of using your muscles. The part I just explained is an extract from DK Yoo, which btw I recommend actually getting his book, it's a really good read. Edit: oh the reason why I brought up taekwondo despite Shioda Gozo being Yoshinkan aikido is because I realize almost all martial art follow the same concept of power. Through relaxation, then sinking and finally getting weight and adjusting the weight. But yeah no touch, no exist that's for certain. But efficient use of strength definitely exist.

I attended a seminar where a participant was chosen (which seemed likely a student of the practitioner) & a no-contact KO was performed on him & he went down hard. I had no doubt that he wasn't faking, because of the way he went out & fell. But I certainly always felt that it has something to do with suggestion & the 'correct' way that the recipient is expected to behave/react. I have trained with Dillman & Leon Jay & the pressure points striking & KO's were pretty much effective when used with a compliant partner but haven't tried it with someone trying to punch my lights out (& I had plenty of opportunity in my previous career...!) Had someone else (Rich Mooney, I think) try to do a no-contact technique on me but... nothing. But he blamed it on jet lag affecting his chi energy... I would love to believe this was a thing & really did exist & it was one of the esoteric mysteries of the Eastern martial arts but I guess I'm to much of a realist.

there is a hidden element to no touch martial artists that you have almost stumbled across. a relationship between the two or more people fighting is always inherent to every single fight. thus, "getting in someones head" is the fundamental component to hypnosis and thus no touch techniques. some people are more vulnerable to this then others, but those who are resistant to having you "get in their head", can be brought to be more vulnerable to this by things such as trauma, such as the trauma of physical violence. if your opponent "knows" that you are legitimately a better physical fighter then them, they might "recognize" a counter attack, and prematurely react. this is essentially a flinch, a flinch is some times helpful in reacting to an unseen counter strike, but sometimes it is an unconciouss action that can be taken advantage of by an opponent. thus, a hypnotic state is acheived by these no touch technique martial arts through convincing that opponent that it is real, but a hypnotic state can be acheived in a real fight by pummeling your opponent, or genuinely intimidating them ; and can be found in moments. this can explain alot of what these elder sensei experience.

Its like 1-2% of the population can do these things, so 98-99% can not so it is not "normal." I have met BS "no touch" promoters, but I have been fortunate to have met, witnessed & experienced energy/vibration students/masters who CAN "do things", DON'T have egos to demonstrate or convince the crowd (a Western trait), and have done demonstrations 100% against disbelievers. Since they CAN do "things" out the ordinary, ordinary people having no excuse for what they experienced tend to dismiss it or make BS reasons to diminish what they themselves exerienced. Its a mess for the enlightened 1-2% to please the comprension limited 98-99%. Drops the mic.

Like many things in martial art, the no touch is just an actual concept that has been overly exaggerated, mis-represented, obfuscated, and mystified so much that it no longer has any bearing in reality. Its basis was just a simple concept: the removal of the target and anticipated resistance after the opponent fully commits to a technique to create an opening, and in extreme cases, a loss of balance. It's basically the Charlie Brown football kick. It does happen even in sparing and even actual fights, but in most cases it's just a fluke. It depends on the opponent's inability to recover posture/guard or maintain balance on a miss. It's not something you can really count on. In legit schools, the concept is mostly taught to emphasis the importance of maintaining balance and posture, and to recognize and capitalize such a lucky break when the other guy does takes a tumble on a miss.

I did find a no-touch martial arts that works. By exerting a small amount of pressure on a metal lever, I can make some volatile chemicals explode, propelling an enclosed fragment of metal down a grooved tube at a speed no human reflex can match. I have no intention of using this art against a living being, but initial tests against wooden and paper targets verify its lethality, and some of its practitioners I know have, in fact, used it against dangerous animals. That's the only no touch art I'd trust, but rumors persist of a similar art that causes miniature spears to speed into the target.

One of the biggest problems with no touch techniques is the idea of "mastery" - the best teachers aim for their students to *surpass* them. All the no touch masters I've seen aim for their students to *elevate* them instead. If your goal is to make people revere you, you have no business calling yourself a master of any martial art. Your goal should be to help your students to become superior to you, not to hold them back as techniques like this end up doing to many students.

"No Touch Martial Arts" is just one manifestation of a larger problem. The need to be special, to be right, and for those we follow to be special and right has been at the heart of some of humanities biggest fumbles. In the scienes we've had lysenkoism in the Soviet Union and denialism surrounding the affects of smoking (to scratch the surface). In antiquity we had Crassus and his doomed march against the Parthians. In the Middle Ages there was the Children's Crusade. Really it's depressing to think about. This is such a consistent part of the human experience and there doesn't seem to be a real "fix" beyond committing yourself to challenging the people close to you. Which is bound to lead to unnecessary conflict in your life.

Eastern mysticism has a lot of value in it, just not for self deffense. It is a collection of arts for the development of psycological well being, not for war

Has your aikido teacher ever told you the story of when he got mugged and one of the muggers realised it was his old sensei and said hey don’t mess with him that’s my old sensei... I’ve heard this story in a couple of dojo’s now and other stories also. My sensei did a no touch knock down on me when I was young, now I’m older I can see all the suggestion leading upto that moment.

Yes, people are looking for the easy way out. But in all actuality physical fights can be won & lost inside the mind. And you can mentally beat a person to the point where you don't have to throw one single punch in order to make them back down, or win the conflict. And not to change the subject, but if your defense is good enough along with his offense not being good enough you can fight somebody without getting touched to the face, or body. But any way one should build up their mind as a warrior while breaking the mind of an opponent rather by physical force, or mental play, or both.

Believing in something that is more than what we are doing each day is actually quite realistic since we are adapting to our lifestyle, getting better at what we need and discarding what we do not. Based on that we sure have lost quite a lot of neat little abilites of the centuries. Going beyond what we think is our human limitation might in the end be a matter of perspective. Doesnt make no touch artists any less bullshit, but hell I still like the thought.

It's not the willingness that much as the pattern interrupts. All of the students act as if not they want to hurt their master but want to avoid getting hurt. In exercise the person will almost always avoid getting hurt or injury. If a person goes to attack other person for real they have a whole different approach. For example if you show an open hand as if you were to say 'stop' then most of the people will stop,

martial arts is simply an art of doing something recursively this means whatever you do is martial arts, the way you practice doing things is martial arts, the more you do it, you becoming better and better so if you practice not to touch everything then "No Touch Martial Arts does Exist".

I experienced a few years ago when a no touch student challenged me to hit him...he told me to aim for the face...so, on the first attempt I stopped my punch just a mere millimeters from his cringing face from my knuckle...and I said to him..."you are lucky that I wish you no harm...are you sure you want me to break your nose?" He told me that I wasn't being serious on hitting him...sooo...on the second attempt I hit him so hard on his shoulder, still out of compassion, avoiding his face, where he went twirling a couple of times before he fell to the floor...Lol it was so funny like in the cartoons...he was so dazed and confused...then went back to his no touch master...with his tail between his legs...and a sore shoulder I'm sure.

I think the sempai kohai relationship in most martial arts is misunderstood. The job of the student is to give an honest attack, grip, kick. The senior should teach and show the technique for the junior to feel and understand. It is up to the individual to attack honestly and the responsibility of the instructors to not betray the student, which is what happens. Betrayal of the students trust. This is dangerous as the student believes that they are skilled when they are not. Leading to over confidence in their own ability. This then comes crashing down when at best they visit another dojo, at worst seriously injured or killed in a situation they would previously have walked away from. In my dojo we practice honestly and if it doesn't work we will show tori how. A simple slap on the back or a kick with control. This way everyone learns.

Some people are harder to hypnotize than others yes but you can't be hypnotised against you're will you have to be open to the suggestion. Its simple these people want this stuff to work that's why they think it does or they are faking one or the other you can be a no touch master to simple pretend to throw you're ki blast and I'll fall down to pretend it worked but you still make good points in you're video

I cane to the same conclusions, although I don’t know why you like to shove wingchun drills in there. Its not “going along” its called drilling (partner is cooperative or at least semi cooperative) which is important as well to the learning process, separate from going live.

I don't understand why people believe in something like that. The "Masters" who supposedly mastered such a thing have already been debunked. All "Masters" who have said that they have mastered such a thing, who then fought against other masters of other martial arts, have lost with their "No Physical contact shit".
