I learned a similar lesson the hard way. Bought a 96 Civic, didn't know shit about cars. Gave the dude $1200, the engine was literally smoking like a chimney by the time I got home. This was like 3 years ago. Since then, I taught myself as much as I possibly could about working on used cars. Now I own an 01 Camry and if you seen it, you would think we're in the year 2001. The car looks and drives like new. It's amazing.

A Camry for 3000 should not need a fixing. You can buy one for 500 and put 1200 into to it and you'll have a very reliable car. No sensor on a Camry takes 3 hours to change. Ive taken apart two Camrys, and no sensor took 3 hours.

Just bought a '99 Camry for $700. 160k, and driving home it intermittantly made a rubbing noise that I thought was the tire. Pulled it over, everything looked fine, so I think the wheel bearings are bad on the right side. Also think I have the same front shock problem as you as mild bumps would make a scraping noise on the left side. Also have the check engine light on, and bought it without a good inspection, as it's 13 degrees F outside and I needed a car ASAP. Luckily, we don't require emissions inspection here in Ne, that was a pain in the a** when I lived in Denver. Your video gave me confidence I bought a semi-decent car. Thanks for the post!

I also put brand new tires and new indash dvd ! Ac and heater work!!But this car is solid and bullet proof, but the damm idiot who had this car didn’t like to put in the repairs it needed, I have this car completely babied up with every single repair up to date and I have taken this car to florida from Texas on several occasions!! So people if you have a car and it needs a repair just fucking fix it ! Stop being a cheap ass who just lets shit stayed broken and fix it assholes!!! So basically this Camry I have nowabsolutely does not need anything at all! I have a 1999 Camry LE w/4cyl, AT and so on. It has 279,595 miles on it right now. It gets an AVERAGE of 35 mpg. It has spent its entire life in New England and has ZERO RUST. I paid $850.00 for it and don't want anything else. I even have a second one that is an exact twin as a parts car. Other than my 1965 Pontiac Tempest, 1967 Plymouth Barracuda and my 1972 Dodge Polara, this is one of the most reliable cars I have ever had. You screwed yourself by not taking it to any mechanic. I learned a long time ago to keep an OBDII tester in the car at all times. You can get one at any parts store for under $30.00. If you had spent the money for one and taken ten minutes to learn how to use it you would have discovered that the dealer had just cleared the codes that tripped the CEL. You now have a good reliable car. Keep it maintained and it will last for darn near eternity.

The 8th gen corollas you said you would prefer more than this camry actually have defective piston rings. You made the better choice with the camry. Next time bring your own scan tool that can read live data or spend 100 bucks and have a local mechanic check out the car first before you buy it. The 9th gen corolla from 2003-2008 didn't have those same problems as the 8th generation I mentioned.
@HermannTheGreat

It sounds like you ran into the same issue I did. I bought a beater camry myself with several problems I didn't forsee. One of the issues was with a O2 code but finally after driving a few hundred miles the electronics self-adjusted and the code went away and it started running at the mpg it should. The engine and transmission are so well built that with around $1000 in repairs I know it will last another few years easy and then I'll sell it for a quick $1000. Don't forget the high mpg. A very cheap car to own, but of course you don't look cool but who cares. Also the camry was the better buy than corolla imo, more comfortable for long trips and you can haul more and feel safer, only a 3-4mpg difference. Even with your repairs you have a good deal, imagine the savings if you and your family get 6-7 years out of a $4000 car, that's around $55 a month in cost of ownership, a huge difference from $250-400 that many people pay.

I had the timing belt snap on me at a red light, in my 97 camry. It felt like the car died, and wouldnt turn over, let alone turn on. I got that one off of CL. Now the timing belt is the first thing I check on the camry. The parents of the original driver said he treated it like it was a race car. The camry is not a race car. That camry would look good with black door handles.

The Camry I am about to buy for $900 , the guy has just replaced the timing belt like 2 days ago. Apparently though Its a "non-interference" engine, so even if the timing belt goes bad, its not the end of the world. The engine will not beat itself to death without timing. I will be replacing the front shocks on this car, but apparently that's no big deal. Also, the check engine light is on, so I'll likely be replacing the same part as this guy did, at least I rather hope it's the same part I saw mentioned in another video. Let's see how this goes, maybe we can compare notes later.

If you want a great car the 1991-2001 are the best Camry's built. AC works perfect. You need to change the oil and timing belt. Use synthetic oil and they will easily go 500K or more.
