I am lucky to have a facility near me. I've gone a couple of times. It is very difficult to adjust how much of your body is affected by the uplift; knees bent or not, arms splayed out or brought in close, head up not down, fingers splayed or closed, etc. The instructors are really in tune with this and beginners have to learn. That being said it is an invigorating experience and a lot safer than jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!

@@mikem5043 Very few engineering chances you get to utilise old aircraft engines to create a closed loop air tunnel system safe enough for humans to fly or hover in. They are expensive to make as they arent just about strapping engines and making you fly in the air. The wind speed has to be very consistent throughout and the cost of making them outweighed anyone investing in selling these for public use. The larger wind tunnels you saw in the 80s werent all that much bigger than what you see here. Now obviously much bigger

Exactly. Lots of armchair tunnel flyers in here :). What people don't get is that this is a completely alien activity, and it's impossible to tell in advance how you're going to handle it. Some people 'get' it straight away, and for others it takes a little longer. Kicking is the body's natural response to finding itself in mid-air and/ or to feeling unstable - which can make it a natural instinctive response to being in a wind tunnel. Being aware of what their legs are doing when they're in freefall is also one of the things that newbie skydivers tend to struggle with. This guy is not an idiot, and he probably did listen to his instructors - and he probably swore blind that he wasn't kicking until they showed him the video afterwards!
@georgejacob3162
6 жыл бұрын
MrReasonabubble. I completely agree. I did an indoor skydive this year and my first jump was a complete disaster as I ended up looking up at the ceiling twice. Before doing my second jump I figured out why my first jump was a disaster and it was simply because I had my arms out too straight and too close together so I was very unstable and easy to rotate. My second jump was a big improvement over my first jump as I assumed more of an X position rather than a Y position! The instructors did not tell me what I was doing wrong. You'd think something like that would be obvious to them.

And when you have a job at IFly you basically fly for free and have fun training new people.

It's power of will of the professional sky diver, I believe that once you have over 1000 jumps that skill will be available for you too

I know some people are scared of hight and thats why they won't go skydiving but honestly its the best feeling in the world. A second after your out of the plane you feel like you're floating, that feel like your stomach is falling only happens in that second then its gone. If you have the chance to skydive do it. Just make sure you research the place you to go. Statistically you are more likely to die driving to the place, flying to 12000 ft than actually skydiving.

@kylieduke He was clearly told to straighten his legs, and wasn't responding. It might have been scary for him to go high, but the instructor protected the poor chap from landing on his head or neck, so not too bad.

Doesnt matter how good/experienced the instructor is. Every once in a while you`ll get someone who is especially challenging. Happens in freefall too except you get even less time with your `pupil` prior to wind tunnel. Anyone can quite literally walk in off the street and do tunnel time.

HE'S A BEAUTIFUL SWAN This indoor skydiving wouldn't feel like skydiving, save the wind though, would it? You're not in freefall. Your stomach wouldn't jump into your chest.
