I miss the old genestealer sculpts... maybe I need to 3d sculpt it so I can just print them off.

Wow! If you could do that, we are one step away from having old school Space Hulk back in the menu...

Again, late with the comments I know but I only just found you and I want to follow your work with the Space Crusade fig's. But just out of curiosity, why white highlights instead of a light blue? Bearing in mind that this seems to have been a cursed job for these three figures. Funny because I would have thought it would be the Chaos Space Marines that did that.

White because I would glaze it over again, achieving the nuances of that. Easier? Normal highlights indeed. I am still refining painting, long way to get to a level where I feel comfortable with those pros out there. Mediocre still cuts it for most stuff, tho, and with my Pile of Shame, mediocre has to do or time won't suffice!

Great learnings! About priming, it appears you don’t prime the miniature as a whole but as parts? And they seem to be on sticks? What’s an efficient way to prime with a rattle can?

I prime the miniatures once built, but because the game has the choice of weapons for the Marines, those are separated. Best way to prime with a rattle can is using those sticks I have shown there (amzn.to/3B3uxF0) and choosing the right conditions for doing it: not too hot, not too cold, good ventilation, good distance (around one foot / 30 cm apart), quick and light touches with the paint, repeat until the model is fully covered or it looks the way you want it to look. Don't do a single thick coat, but a few thin ones, letting the models dry in between those. The key is that the area for priming is the right temperature, the air is clear of floating particles, and that the spray paint you use isn't prone to drying mid air like what happened to me.

@@rushthewash Thanks! Seems like the stars must align :). Would that slapchop you explained in another video be easier for a beginner, priming dark and dry brushing white?

Despite the grain given by the primer they look nice to me , great job ! I've got a bunch of unpainted genestealers from Space Hulk , this might be the decisive push...

I'd experiment with more blues and purples from the new contrasts. I didn't have those at that moment, but definitely worth trying and then getting the whole swarm painted in a couple of nice afternoons. If bad paintjobs inspire you guys to paint the minis, then the video was worth making!

Great video! Sucks about the primer, that happened to me too many times. That’s why I switched to priming with my airbrush. Light years better and always consistent. Yours still came out looking great though. They would be Instagram worthy in my book. ❤

I am using airbrush now too. This happened mostly because I used Liquitex white spray and it was 1) scorching hot outside, 2) priming from too afar. Marabu is my go-to for priming nowadays if I have to use a rattlecan, but airbrush is my preferred one nonetheless. Lessons learned the hard way!

So I think once the primer went feral your best option would have been using the standard paint range rather than washes/speedpaints/contrast, Vlog title not withstanding of course. But standard paints, even with a little thinning would have smoothed out that gritty appearance and achieved your goal in the time frame desired. I think your final results were marred by that terrible primer coat. A shame because you are good with shades, washes and inks.

Absolutely true. Thing is, until recently, I didn't have normal paints in my collection over here. Nevertheless, the experimenting is always a learning curve, and this was steep indeed.
