Your Wet behind the ears! Very true statement but if you don't like what you do then your going to be dreading your job daily and everyone you work with will notice it. It will eventually effect your work performance and your outside life. I am half way through my life and I would not ever take your comments seriously! Money is nothing if your wanting to quit your job because you don't have a passion for it and it will show. Then you will never really excel in the line of work because you just don't have motivation to excel! People that do great at their work and make breakthroughs and innovation in their work are ones that love what they do and have a passion will make lots of money because they do what they love not for the money! This is common sense! Sad thing is people are going to buy in to your comment and then say to them self later down the road why did I listen to that guy he had me thinking for the wrong reasons! I have been in the workforce for 22 years so I know what I am talking about.

My biggest motivation for getting into cybersecurity is a fascination with malware and compromising information. It's great to have information that's more than "oh get certs and you're good to go!" I think I'm going to go for pen-testing, going with my malware interest. And as long as I can work up to a comfortable living wage, money isn't an issue for me; I just need to make enough to pay my bills and buy food and have fun occasionally without having to choose between rent and spaghetti month to month. Great video and absolutely spot on, I'm studying for a cyber security degree and honestly I don't like it one bit, it's absolutely boring and I have no interest whatsoever in the subject as it just doesn't appeal me one bit particularly Linux commands, protocols and there's tons of content which is just plain dry and it just puts me off. I struggle doing my assignments (even though been getting first class so far) as I have zero interest in the field and university is to be partly blamed for it as well as teaching standard is absolutely awful and they don't even explain things at all which makes it even harder to keep myself focused or enjoy this thing. Guys if you are not passionate about networks, protocols, Linux operating system, python, Visualization and learning about computers then please avoid this field as it's not everyone's cup of tea. Passion and motivation are probably the most important things for anything you want to do so if you lack one of these genuinely then it's best to do what you love then do something just for its perks and future prospects which you have no interest whatsoever.

I don't disagree with you Collin. However, money and job security SHOULDN'T be the leading motivators for any career. I'm an artistic and creative person, with a passion for acting and music. I would love to do something related to this. But I want to be able to have a comfortable life when I'm old. I am a teacher at the moment and, despite being good at it, I can't afford to buy nuts at the supermarket, unless I waive buying other more essential foods. BTW, that's the Australian price... I have set a standard of life I want for me in 10 years or so and unfortunately my passions will have to be delegated to hobbies. So yes, money and job security are indeed of much more importance than love for work. Call me chicken if you want, but when you're an immigrant who had very little and is nearing 40, love is an option, not a main factor for work.

There's one reality here. In countries like Norway, people can do WHATEVER THE HELL THEY WANT for a living, and they'll have enough money to pay their bills, and they'll have enough money for retirement. This is not the case in the US, and let's not even get into the reality of 3rd world countries. It's sad. Really. And it makes me mad that this is how our system works. Because, in Norway, you don't have to worry about paying your bills. That stops being a motivation to study something, or getting into a field. We have a long way to go.

I disagree!!! Money should be a big factor on why you want a cybersecurity career. I've worked in the medical field for over 16yrs I have my CRAT cert and I see so many nurses who are miserable and feel like they are underpaid. At least seek a career that will compensate you for your hardwork especially in a field that will have you working over time, on-call, various hours. I do agree that you must have an interest, but that goes for any career you seek. Me personally I like the field but I'm not over the top with excitement as some might be but from a lot of videos Ive seen everyone acts like you have to be extremely passionate which is far from the truth. You need to do a lot of stuff, like build reviews for operating systems, databases and firewalls. Web app and mobile tests. External and internal infrastructure tests and wireless. Not to mention accreditations like CREST if you work in the UK. It's a really difficult job and the first 2 years is nothing short of a nightmare of constant steep learning on the job. People often forget too that reporting is a massive part of it. Confidence is a really key attribute too as you are speaking with clients everyday. You also need to travel often. Well if you think about it those are the 2 most generic motivations for any job in reality. If it weren't for those 2 major important things then people wouldn't want to be picking out careers. It's a little misleading to say not to join in cyber security if it's for those 2 reasons. That's how mostly people join a field more than half the time. Sure some people may be a little interested in computers but those 2 motivations I wouldn't say they are a bad start to join the field. That's how everyone joins a field. Even when CS is paying a lot no one's doing it so it's a job in demand rn. Especially with the internet growing there aren't many people in the field. At my campus nearly most classes are empty and are always asking and advising students to go into this field which was why I did and I found it to be a little interesting. It's not good to join a field you like because it'll destroy your passion. I like games but I would never be a developer I feel like it would just ruin how I see games for what they are. It's really common for anyone to join a field based on how not to start a career. That's how everyone starts a career.

The best advice I can give in relation to deciding a career is that money is a factor, be honest with yourself, but ask yourself why this lucrative career and not another one, why this over being a stockbroker or a lawyer or a drug lord or a miner. If it's just money and a knack you probably won't go far especially in cyber security which seems to have a decent barrier to entry.

I disagree completely with this notion that you need to be 'interested' or 'passionate' about a career. It's naive and childish. Every career is boring. A job is a job is a job. I spent years getting into the games industry with all this passion and vigor and I got here and it's mind-numbingly boring. You get interested in your career, you develop skills, get good at your job, and you build passion in it. Assuming that you have to "do what you love" is a passé argument that is used by school careers guidance councilors with no concept of the real world.

Bro this is a joke right??? I’m also a cybersec major and don’t get me wrong I love computers and I’m great at this stuff because I excelled @ STEM as a kid but you are fucking kidding yourself if you don’t think I’m in this for the money. Money runs the world. Do I love subnetting like a grunt no do I love Linux and Python scripting and Networking sure, do I love fat fucking stacks of cash??? You best believe I’m motivated by money 💰 let’s keep it 💯

I completely disagree While passion for something is cool, I am not a photographer or artist because I can't live a life I want with that pay. The main reason someone should pursue a good job is money! If any upper lvl job can't bring more money it's pointless, cybersecurity as of now brings good money, but the amount of bullshit to jump to get a role is very high. In fact chances are you will be offered very low salary to begin with, and your $300-400 certs that you have to maintain for 3 years can cost you quite a bit, annnd guess what? No company wants someone with no cert/experience, everyone wants qualified people. The whole cybersecurity field is fucked up, you need certs to get it...ok let's get entry level certs, guess what no one needs entry level, everyone wants senior specialists with CISSP....damn, ok so let's get CISSP....guess what? You need like 4yrs of security work experience to write the test...dammmn, so you are telling me entry level certs are useless, there are senior jobs mostly, and in order to get experience I need to have advanced certs that require experience? Sorry lads, but this field is a fucked up one to transition into, seriously...it's only going to work if you got a connection that can push you in

I'm second year Cyber Security at UTSA University. It's a hard career, many people are very arrogant of their self worth. This leads them to think that they can just get into this field because they want to. If you think you can just pursue cyber security because "money" that's delusional. It's a very competitive field; it's very prefessional. You have to be better than everyone else. Learning cyber security goes hand-in-hand with building your "certs." It's not "fucked": it's hard. Hard jobs pay.

@@AranakAsulis I can show you people that have English Degrees and no Cyber certs that occupy cybersecurity roles with no tech background at all and I know 2 people personally with entry level cybersecurity certifications with tech education that can't get an entry level job...it's a useless field Yes, it's hard, but it is also fucked The whole IT field is fucked at this point, there are no regulations, no sanctioning body or associations...any average Joe can come and take jobs with no education at all, add the outsourcing to India...and oh boy oh boy

@@VLADB07 "Cyber security" is an umbrella term. If you want to find a job with entry level qualifications, try internships first. Most companies offer programs, most notably banks. There's no associate or regulators for photography either. Most of it is just common sense and basic legal guidelines. Competitive fields won't just give you jobs. No one wants a cynic. Try going at it with less negativity, or find something else.

Not really competitive don't set the standards up high and mislead people that it's difficult. If anything they want more people in that field because no one's really doing it. Those certificates even community colleges offer them and for the most part most of them don't take many years. For an IT specialist I think it's just 2 classes besides the mandatory 6 or 7 classes that are the main for the entire cyber security field. But if your done with mandatory college classes you really don't need to worry. Half the time whenever I pass down the computer lab building that has all those cyber classes they are nearly empty and are always asking for students to look into the programs and major since they want more students in that field. Don't make it sound complicated. Any field can be competitive but honestly Cyber Security isn't one of them. It's growing and employment for that career there isn't many people as far as I'm aware and from what other professors have told me.

I completely disagree. I'm doing cybersecurity because it will provide enough income for the life that I want to live. If I ever want to start a family I wont have to worry about if I'll have my job in the future. You don't need a passion just dedication. Whether you like it or not

I disagree, there is lots of stress in this domain, if u dont have passion for it u will burn out real quick from the amount of daily security news that u need to keep up with, let alone actually doing ur job, or ur organization gettin hacked

@@darkarmy5878 I think it really depends on what your job actually is. Cybersecurity isn't really a job, its field it hundreds of positions. And depending on what they're paying I'd bet people will learn the skills. No doubt having a passion about the work will make it easier. Its about priorities in my opinion. Is maintains a certain lifestyle more important than having a job you enjoy, its really on a person to person basis. Some people are more than will to make all sorts of sacrifices

@@novanuke1356 I've been in the field of security and risk mngmnt for over 12 years, if u want to provide real value to your company u need to stay up to date. You can know few stuff, get the money, and survive, but i wouldnt consider that a real cyber security job.
