It might not cost that much to produce the actual product, but novo has spent over 20 years to develop the drug and are investing heavily into increasing manufacturing to keep up with demand. Also - the growth in Denmark from pharma isn’t just from novo, but the entire industry and the country has a lot of pharmaceutical companies. It would be the same if you took tech out of the USA economy and said that it would shrink had it not been for Apple and Microsoft etc

Nice video - the price of 1000 dollars must be the US price after all the middle salesmen in the US system - it costs me about 100 dollars per month to use on the middle dosage ( Diabetic type 2 here ) I live in Denmark btw.... Leo is actually in my town. These days they produce medicin for dermatology and some few products for trombosis - not even close to the grandieur of Novo

@sauronjI think it might be your own money when buying medicine. I am in Denmark too and when I buy medicine that I need for my diagnosis I actually have had my doctor request some sort of deduction(sorry I don't know the word I mean basically the government pays for most of the price) and I paid only about 50-60usd from the original like 250usd

@sauronj Medication is subsidised if it's a prescription, so you will pay something. I buy steroid creme for a chronic skin condition and i pay 15$ for a 3 month supply. I don't exactly know how it's calculated. It's "free" in that what you pay out of pocket is not going to hurt you financially, and if it would then i'm very certain you can get further deduction through the municipality. However, the highest level of crippling chronic conditions, you'll be what is called "invalide pension" (invalide being a term for handicapped in Denmark) where then everything is pretty much paid for by the state, accomodation, medication, hospital trips, physiotherapy and a monthly pension from the municipality, which isn't going to make you rich by any means. However, the same applies to people without Danish citizenship. If you are here legally then most of our welfare concerning medicine, hospital etc. applies to you - as it does in every country in Europe i'm pretty sure, atleast the majority. Private hospitals are also often subsidised by the state for emergency care, but you don't buy medication at private hospitals, you buy it at a pharmacy. All operations and procedures have no co-pay, that is entirely covered, so if you break your leg, you won't be paying anything not even x-rays.

Denmark does what Finland should have done. They don't count novo nordisk profits into their budget. So any money received from novo is counted as bonus. The whole company could vanish from 1 day to another and Denmark would be fine.

The big difference between the Nokia/Finland issue and NovoNordisk/Denmark is that Nokia’s technology could easily be replaced/outdone, whereas a patented pharmaceutical product has 10 years to create huge profits, before patent expiry. All the while, a product pipeline brings new products to market. There is the major difference between the technology and pharma sectors.

Such a good video and then you compare GDP with market cap... it's completely wrong to compare those to metrics. You may be able to compare GDP with revenue or profits that are both annual fiqures, but market cap is a representation of all future cash flows. Misleading. Like you're saying market cap of Nokia is higher than Finland's gdp... but Nokia is part of Finlands GDP...

Keep up the good work 👍 Your comparison between Denmark's GDP and Novo's MC is, however, a bit misleading. GDP is a flow measure (a country's total production over 1 year), whereas MC is a stock measure (the present value of all expected dividends over the entire life of the company).

Well, using it to compare to Finland with Nokia makes sense, it highlights the danger of a national economy where a single sector or company suddenly starts or stops being a primary economic driver. Denmark has a more robust economy than Finland, but its still worth keeping in mind to not rely on Novo Nordisk. Which is also why the Danish government have taken to discounting Novo Nordisk from financial planning so any income from Novo is a happy bonus and any crash by Novo will not cause national budgets to falter. It's absolutely true that GDP cannot be compared directly to market cap, and many ignorant people around the internet have made it out like Novo could "buy Denmark" and such, which is ridiculous on every level. However companies like Novo existing in small economies can absolutely poison the economy from within and it needs to be kept in mind.

It's important to consider that the very high cost of Ozempic in the US is due to the system, everyone part of the value chain takes a high cut. Thus all medication is expensive in the US.

One thing to note to is that when Novo Nordisk tested their drugs effectiveness they tested it on type 2 diabetics mainly knowing that they have a harder time losing weight. Lillies drug was tested on more normal individuals making it easier for them to lose weight. Novo Nordisk, and Lilly have not had a 1v1 yet in an equal manner to see whose drug is better

Being a company that trade it's stock on the market, the sworn purpose of a company, is to maximize their profits. Lowering prices will be bad for profit, and they would act against what they have sworn to do.

I would rather live in a poorer country, than watch Novo Nordisk force people to pay insane prices for life-saving medication. They did pledge to lower prices by 75% in the US though, but that was because of pressure from competitors and government. They can literally make insulin at less than 3 USD per dose and still be profitable, according to their own website with their efforts in poor countries, so it's not a stretch to say that they should be able to lower the prices in the US to waaaay less that freaking $98... If you don't wanna see Denmark suffer from this, just buy more lego or something..
