My biggest problem with UBW adaptation is that it can show Shirou's inner thoughts properly. He's not 100% lawfull good dork. He is a mage's son. Mage's in Nasuverse are not good people. Yes he crave to be a hero but will have no objections about killing Shinji in few scenes for example. This create a interesting dynamic about his inner thoughts, scenes that work great in VN are sometimes looing kinda dumb animated.

I do think UFOtable does what they can without having the ability to convey a constant inner monologue. But it does relegate a good bit of Shirou's complexity to subtext. if you're willing to dig into that subtext, I think anime Shirou is still very well handled. But I understand why people are put off by some of his defining traits being less up front.

I think one of the biggest sacrifices for the animation is getting rid of the horror elements of the Visual Novel. SPOILER: I distinctly remember when Shirou stubbles upon the chamber under the church where Kirei is keeping the other orphans as a source of energy to keep Gilgamesh alive for those 10 years. The way Nasu describes the scene made my skin crawl and my stomach turn. That kind of discovery has room to happen and lend itself to the ongoing story in a Visual Novel, but in an animation it's something that is superfluous and you can easily cut... but the ambiance of the entire thing takes a hit for each one of those things that are cut.

Having read the Visual Novel, I think the UFOTABLE adaptations are serviceable at worst. If anything, I think the fight scenes in UBW try TOO hard to replicate the Nasu writing which bogs down the action. While the Heaven's Feel movies (perhaps for those reasons, or perhaps because the movies had less run time) cut much of the wordiness in favor of visual action and, in so doing, took advantage of the unique medium of animation to make a more compelling film. You can't translate a Visual Novel into animation without making some changes. Because each medium is better at certain things than the other. If you tried to do a 1-to-1 adaptation, it would be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. And, hey... the visual novel is right there if you want that experience. And now we're getting an official translation, so it'll be easier for us to tell new fans "just read the visual novel."

13:50 exactly. Fate is a very specifically written work of art, with a surprisingly small and focused scope, under a thick atmosphere. After Zero and HA, it stops being that, and become much more of a standard magical action story with lots of jargons that sounds cool but fails to evoke wonder. That's why I just utterly hate FGO, and what the rest of the multiversal and alien stuff does to the lore - it used to be a world that's very specifically and wonderfully written. The newer stuff just doesn't hold up.
@jaydenlobbe7911

I mean the Nasuverse kinda started with Aliens, Sci-Fi and Cosmic Horror, Angel Notes was basically the foundation for the Nasuverse as we know it because it was one of Nasu's earliest published works, and it's a Sci-Fi/Cosmic Horror story about Sentient fucking Planets eradicating Humanity because Planet Earth fucking died Kara no Kyoukai? A story about a girl who can see the very concept of Death itself and she has multiple personalities, one of these Personalities is the physical embodiment of the fucking Root of Akasha, which is literally the center of all creation Tsukihime? This time it's a boy who can see the concept of Death and it's heavily tied to the Sentient Planets because the Main Heroine is literally Planet Earth herself
@FengLengshun
5 ай бұрын
@@jaydenlobbe7911 and yet, they were all done in a very specific, quite limited sense. Notes was well into the war, and it tells the story of the Type Slayer and a being born of one of the dead Types that wants to understand humans better. Rakkyo, while seemingly having a high concept premise, you wouldn't be able to tell from introspective the LN and even the movie was. The mechanics are there to prod the characters into embodying the larger themes they have, and they focused on those themes over several books/movies. Tsukihime focuses very much on the issues troubling the characters on the Near and Far Side, respectively. The MEoDP was glossed over here, you got none of that Idea Blood stuff, and very simple lore for the vampires with the rest shrouded in mystery - an aspect that Nasu managed to somewhat preserve to a degree in the Remake. You have things like Ort... and what's scary is that you don't know just how far above he is over any beings in Nasuverse. You have the basic concepts of True Magic, and it makes it even more special when a random swordsman brushed into its edges because bro wants to slice a sparrow so badly. The problem with FGO, and most of the non-Nasu Nasuverse stuff, is that they lack the focus that Nasu can narrow down to make the high concept play second fiddle to the characters and the atmosphere.
@jaydenlobbe7911
5 ай бұрын
@@FengLengshun I’m well aware, my point is simply that High Concept Lore isn’t the problem with FGO, since that has been with the Nasuverse since it began FGO has a lot of problems but your initial comment kinda made it seem like you’re blaming it all on the High Concept Lore, when the problem is the aforementioned lack of focus
@FengLengshun

@@jaydenlobbe7911 I think it is a symptom - as in mainline Nasu works he manages to make very efficient uses of one or a few concepts - Reality Marble for example was set up in Rakkyo with Araya, then used by one of the antagonists in Tsuki, and then becomes a core part of the protagonist's ability in F/sn. A concept isn't just thrown out there just because it makes for convenient storytelling (and moneymaking). But tbh, I just look at the terms of Quantum Time-Lock, Lostbelt, Proper Human History, all trying to justify this convoluted gacha plot and I'm like "Man, when did Nasuverse turned into BlazBlue?" No offense to BlazBlue, I enjoyed my experience of it, but that is such a glaring symptom of how different it is from the old Nasuverse in terms of feel.

Also the part of repetition my mind jumped to one of the last scenes of fate route (spoilers duh), when shirou was splashed with the grails mud and that wall of text invaded our screen. I think another thing similar but to convey a different thing due to context is the infamous chair scene in tsukihime (just remembered that) but also these two scenes have similiraties with the atmosphere of the first scene of Saya no Uta. anyway another fha w

Hollow actually so many of my favorite scenes in that regard (Medea's flashback, Medusa losing control, Shirou and Caren fending off the shadows, and Bazett and Angra's conversation in The Grail. Just to name a few). The Grail Mud scene is another really good example since it is literally Shirou being overwhelmed by the force of "all the world's evils." I first started playing FSN back in 2009 and my impression was it was an urban fantasy or a dark fantasy. Since then, I have consumed anime and related content and back in the late 90s and early 2000s, there were quite a few works that were urban fantasies, Boogie Pop, Yu yu Hakusho, Bleach, Lodoss Wars, Berserk, Bastard, Hell even Kara no Kyoukai and Tsukihime were part of it. I will argue that the novels Baccano and Monogatari were made by those inspired of the media from that those time period.

The dreamy, mystery, somehow urban horror yet fantasy like of FSN is so unmatch that the Animes haven't done them justice. I'm curious but will you also cover other Type-Moon works? The topic about the atmosphere not being translated is interesting. I think you still haven't read Tsukihime but there's a similar discourse surrounding the original vn released way back in 2000 vs the remake that recently was released in 2021 (the localization being released later this year) when it comes to atmosphere. There's also The Garden of Sinners and The Witch of the Holy Night with the upcoming movie adaptation by ufotable. Also I have no idea if you do play/read FGO and I'm aware many is turned-off by it because it's a gacha game even though it contains some of the best Fate stories in recent years.

So in terms of other TM works, I'm currently playing through Mahoyo. I've yet to play Tsukihime but I do plan to go through both the original and the remake, so I'm interested to see what my take on that discourse is. But I definitely would love to cover them once I've gotten into them. The other thing I'll mention is that I fully plan to cover Fate works outside the main timeline as well, since I feel those are criminally underdiscussed. In terms of FGO, I haven't gotten into it myself. Part of that is because of the Gacha, but I haven't looked at any of the adaptations either, simply because it doesn't really try to do what interests me about Fate in the first place. A huge reason that Fate stands out from other series that makes use of historical/mythological figures for me is the context of the HGW. The mix of transplanting them into a present day setting, forcing them to have a relationship with a modern day mage, and the chance at wish are where I feel a lot of Fate's most interesting aesthetics and interesting character work with Servants comes from. Focusing solely on the Servants themselves with more conventionally fantastical settings like the singularities always kinda felt like missing the point to me. Though, as I say in the video, variety is what I love about Fate. So I’ll probably get to it eventually, it’s just not immediately intriguing to me.
@dreadnightdew6225
5 ай бұрын
@@somecanadian522 That's a fair point on FGO and that's generally a common sentiment on why people don't bother with it. FSN and other Fate spinoffs relating to the HGW are essentially urban fantasies while FGO is a grand adventure to save the world. But I hope one day you will consider reading it. With FGO's setting it offers a different character work that I think it's only possible within the circumstances of FGO while still maintaining the same themes that are present in other TM works. Because for me one the things that fascinates me about the Fate series is their wild interpretations of mythological/historical figures that may not even make sense yet somehow often manages to be endearing. Also I think it's interesting to study how Nasu's writing evolve over the years and how FGO influences other Type-Moon works that are still ongoing/relatively new like Tsukihime Remake, Strange Fake and Prisma-Ilya....especially Strange Fake the FGO influence went wild with one that lol.

Though, I definitely think you make an extremely interesting point about the evolution of Nasu's writing style. I'm already feeling that in playing through Mahoyo, and that's not nearly as recent as Tsuki-Re and parts of FGO. Hard agree on what you say about Fate's unique takes on mythological figures as well. Firstly it should’ve been as grand as Gil vs enkidu in strange fake. instead it only looked like Gil used 30 gates at a time when he can do thousands. & shirou should’ve manifested swords from every direction not just the front as seen in his NP animation in fgo. There should’ve been explosions, lasers & element attacks going off all around them. & shirou should’ve had like six gae bolgs reinforcing his strikes cause Gil should have the advantage in strength by lore.
