I think one of the reasons I appreciate your channel so much is that instead of presenting this glamorous lifestyle or goal we all "should" strive for it us just a reminder that we should do what is right for us. I wouldn't say that other "fitness influecers" make me feel bad about myself, because I don't interact or care about content I know isn't helpful towards my wellbeing, but it does leave me feeling like I can never measure up, if that makes any sense. And hearing the way he talks about feeling insecure about himself, man, that hit. I used to feel like that all the time. In school, I could never keep up with the other kids in PE and I was just "known" as someone unfit. And it does sting, especially if you're young, overweight, and keep comparing yourself to your skinny friends. I attempted several times to lose weight and exercise regularly, but it nevet stuck. It was just something I did, but I didn't think of myself as someone who would keep exercising forever. My biggest gripe would always be "man, I wish I had started earlier. Then I would be there already." But I never started, so I never was there. What "did" it for me was actually one of my teachers. He's a bit... interesting, but we had to read a book in class about habits than can improve your life. And it said to start small, just 10 minutes a day, and so I did. I started to go to the gym regularly, not "two to three times a week" I would claim just because I had done that once and build up my stamina. At the stat I couldn't even run for 5 minutes, that felt hard already. But I just kept going and now I've come to a point where 10k is not a big deal and I've done two half marathons. What I'm trying to say is that instead of wishing for the life you could've had if you had done X or Y, just start where you are now and maybe you can get there. I've been avoiding going for a run for the past few months, mostly because I had kinda shirked it and now was too afraid I had lost all my stamina. But today I was randomly like, let's go. And I went. And I did my run and I was fine. My biggest hurdle sometimes is fear that I'm not going to be good enough or that it's going to be too hard, so my advice is just trying. And if you fail, well, there's always tomorrow. Working out genuinely changed my life, and I am proud of myself for doing and becoming someone I always felt was way out of reach. I'm no professional athlete, of course, but I am fit enough to work out hard in the gym and run a casual 10k without dying, which is not something everyone can do. This comment is kinda long, but I just wanted to share my story and how much I appreciate this channel for helping me start sometimes, when I really don't want to.

Spot on, Mark doesn't shy away from talking about the everyday hardships he struggles with. People can relate to that. It shows that fit people work on their fitness despite all the bullshit life throws at them. They weren't born with a six pack and a hatred for chocolate, just like the rest of us.

This struck a chord , I'd read what people had done and thought there's no way I could do that , and I'm , maybe was, number one at finding an excuse not to do stuff. Despite having done a fair bit of stuff in the past. I'm 67 and starting to exercise more/harder, I still dread the thought of an hour on my exercise bike well don't look forward to it BUT always love it when it's over and feel great every time. I've now got a few things I cannot find an excuse not to do and when I dither I say well you only have to do 10minutes if its crap you stop , but once you've made the big effort to start you rarely stop.

I’ve gotten to the point in my journey where I now look like the people I used to see running while I was out on the road who would make me so jealous and resentful. And I tell you, nothing motivates me more at the level I’m at than seeing other people out there who are in the early stages of their journeys. It’s inspiring to be reminded of how far you’ve come, and of what really makes the difference. It’s not ability. It’s determination.

Its sad so many people are embarrassed to start running or swimming or going to the gym because they are out of shape. At least for me I’m more impressed with the person who outweighs me by 100 lbs showing up and banging out a half mile then the person who’s been doing it for years doing a quick 5k. Because it was ten times harder for that person both to show up and do that half mile and they will be hurting more. Never be embarrassed of yourself for wanting to make yourself better and never be embarrassed for being a beginner. Most people dont care, more people than you think will be impressed, and the actual naysayers are jerks anyways so who cares what they say you don’t want to be friends with them anyways.

It's hard to articulate on a video or in writing Bill. Your family and friends are seeing you grow as a person. Because that's what happens. So they also get the benefits.. Sometimes we focus too much on the medals, bathroom scales, belt sizes, 5km times. We miss that we've become a better person to be around. Less moody. Can do person and not a 'can't be bothered' one. More alive. Grown character as well as muscles. Become an inspiration for your kids. You only need two things to get ahead in life. Discipline & Determination.

I 100% steal your channel theme when I talk to people about fitness. "What made you start running?" "I just want to be better than average." Thanks for the work you put into this channel. It really is life changing. 400lbs -> 230lbs. I'm able to sit on a rowing machine without snapping it in half. I went from struggling to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail near my house, to running those same sections several times a week just for fun. I can ride a mountain bike without breaking the wheels going over a small bump. The motivation for starting was all the small things, death by a thousand cuts. So, it is all the small things I notice the most. Being able to bend at the waist and tie my shoe, it is hard not to smile every time I do it. Sitting down in a chair without a careful inspection, or nervously doing a squat, crouch sit. Heh, I am comfortable going out in public wearing full lycra when road biking now (so, I guess not everything is positive, lol). Yeah, that guy is a version of me.

And yes, if they need to do it for their kids or spouse, that’s good enough to take the first step.

Love this! It’s a lesson that resonates with me: We all have potential to be athletes in our own right, it’s in the process of doing things that we are able to shape ourselves. When I was a kid, I couldn’t run faster than maybe a 12 minute mile. Some of that was that I’m moderately disabled with a low oxygen level, but more of it was to do with the mindset that being active “wasn’t for me” and I grew to know an inactive body. I learned in my adulthood to get comfortable being active, and while I still may be slower than average, this disabled body has now ridden over 4,000 miles across the US, and is capable of riding for hours on end. Regardless of what condition of body you’ve got, it’s the only one we get, and learning to find the athlete within has been the most gratifying journey.

This is a nice break from all the self indulgent fitness influencer scum out there trying to push gimmicky products for profit. “This shit is hard, but it is worth it” is a better take away than “take this supplement and you’ll lose weight, links in the description” I’m down 40lbs and have another 20 to go before I’m where I want to be. It has been tough and the biggest struggle is me.

Mate, this broke both my eyes 🥹 this reflects me, after chest pains when pregnant with our second child, I realised to be here for my kids to love them is to afford some love for me. As I can’t be here for them if I’m no longer around thank you so much for sharing this ❤ Jason minus 3 stone resting HR from 80 to 52!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing Miles' story and how it touched you. I, myself, weighed over 320 pounds for far too many years and felt that I was purely existing, not living. Everything hurt, I was constantly exhausted, and I isolated myself out of fear of being seen. I finally made the decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery and have since lost 120 pounds; it's completely changed my life. I'm now training for a half marathon and have completed several triathlons and long-distance open water swim races. I share my journey on my own channel for the same reasons you stated: to maybe, hopefully, help someone else along their own journey. I'm not an anomaly, I'm not special; I'm just a person who learned to put action to my dreams and chip away at them slowly. Mark, thank you for bringing so much positivity and realness to this space. While many of us are not above-average, your channel never feels exclusive or elitist. I never feel condescended to or like what you share is unrelatable. I don't have the words to express how much that means to someone who literally used to get out of breath bending over to tie my shoes up. You ARE an inspiration and you've touched more lives than you'll ever know.

Thanks to both of you for sharing this. I"m 265lbs and 5'8". I used to be very fit into my late 20s with bodyweight and running exercise, and wasn't too bad into my late 30s while bicycling everywhere, but I was definitely putting on weight. I'm trying to pivot the negative attitude of "Ugh, I suck and I NEED to work out!" to "Working out releases endorphins and all that. It can feel good, and I want to feel good". I was "Feeling good" on food and alcohol, and now I"m starting to realize the food and alcohol don't feel as good as taking care of my body.

“Start moving whether that be figuratively or literally”. One of the most inspiring videos I’ve seen in the platform. Keep up the great work, King 👑

Love this. I learned to say yes to myself and say no to others. Sometimes you have to put yourself first. If you don’t you can’t be there for anyone else.

Wow. Respect to Miles. Taking the first step is one thing. But continuing the way he has is no joke. Inspiring.

I was doing well up until Christmas but have been unwell since. I’ve been feeling it’s impossible to get back on track, but this has inspired me. I just need to start small again, it’s ok to not be where I was before. I just need to keep going. Thank you for sharing this Mark.

Do hard things! Love this! I never imagined I would be the person going to the park in the winter time to exercise. I started that habit and never stopped! It's been 3 winters now. It requires so much discipline and many days I am the only person out there and I never want to do it.......but I plan to do it until I no longer can! Regaining any of that weight is not an option for me so I choose to continue just doing the hard things! What is the alternative? What an inspiration his story is!

Omg what a legend, thanks for sharing that Mark. I'm early in my own journey, just started a very gentle pre-couch to 5k last Autumn and this has encouraged me to get out this evening after losing a month to the flu. It's stories like this that reminds me I can do it. Thanks both.
