Knowing how people respond to trauma can help you understand what is a normal experience if you have been through a traumatic event, and also help you help someone else who may have been exposed to a trauma. If you know why do I feel this way after my trauma, it can help you feel less alone. So, how do people respond to traumatic events? They may experience avoidance, hyperarousal, changes in their thoughts and mood, or re-experiencing. But, first, what are some traumatic events? A traumatic event is when there is a threat of actual or perceived death, or serious injury. Whether a person considers something traumatic is based on their assessment only, and no one else. You can’t tell someone whether what they experienced was or wasn’t traumatic. That is for them to decide. But how do you know if an effect was traumatic to the person? By paying attention to how they respond. When you know what is normal after a trauma, you know what to look for. And you can also know their response is normal and not necessarily a cause for concern. How does trauma affect you? In many ways, such as hyperarousal, poor sleep, blaming yourself, or nightmares, to name a few. Trauma and sleep problems are common because the person may have nightmares about the trauma, or they feel on edge and this affects their ability to relax. If you aren’t the person who has experienced the trauma and it was a friend, you may wonder how do i help a friend after a traumatic event? I discuss some ways in this video. And I also briefly touch on PTSD symptoms and that not all people who have experienced a trauma will develop PTSD.
